Wings of Fire (TV show) is the television adaptation of the Wings of Fire series. It was first announced in 2019,[event 1] though little was revealed about it. It was under the works of Warner Bros. Animation and was going to be launched on Netflix[1] using the medium of 3D animation.[2] The first season would have been the adaptation of book one and would have contained ten episodes, each being forty minutes long. Ava DuVernay spearheaded the series, while Dan Wilano and Christa Starr ran the show;[3] DuVernay, Tui T. Sutherland, Sam Register, Sarah Bremmner, and Justin Ridge worked on executive producing duties.[4] According to IMDB, as of April 2nd, 2022, the show had left "pre-production" and has begun "filming".[5] It was originally given a 2022 release, but the show has been cancelled by Netflix over "creative differences", rather than the costs needed to produce the show.[6]

On February 22nd, 2024, a new TV series was announced, this time developed at Amazon MGM Studios. As of February 23rd, no writer is currently attached, though Marc Resteghini will executive produce via Jack Tar Productions.[7] The TV series will be remade entirely, as no assets from the Netflix show can be reused.[event 2] On May 12, 2025, Aaron Waltke was announced as the showrunner for the Wings of Fire TV show.[8]

  • Tui noted that she wanted to have finished the Wings of Fire story before a TV series is released, because she does not want the ending taken away from her.[event 4]
  • A leaked clip from the Netflix show was posted on YouTube. It was taken down by Warner Brothers within a day of being uploaded.
  • Tui stated that the process of making a TV show was like a 50-step plan and they were on step 15, before the show was cancelled by Netflix.
