Below is a glossary of some of the lexicon, slang, and colloquialisms used by the dragons and humans of Pyrrhia and Pantala in Wings of Fire.
Terms
Pyrrhian Terms
- Imperial, Oracle, and Perception: The names of the three moons of the Dragon Planet.[1]
- Scavenger: Human, formerly referred to as scavenger by all Pyrrhian dragons. Used to be the dominant life form until the Scorching.[2]
- Scavenger claw: Sword, dagger, or knife. Often long, sharp, or curved item that belongs to a scavenger. A scavenger claw was used to kill Queen Oasis.[3]
- Scavenger Den: A human settlement such as a village, town, or small kingdom.
- Scavenger paw: The human hand.[4]
- The Scorching: An event that happened over five thousand years ago, when dragons rose, took the continent from the scavengers, the dominant Pyrrhian species, and formed kingdoms and proper tribes.
- Sleephouse: A tall tower of mud that MudWing troops sleep in, present in the MudWing village near the Diamond Spray Delta.[5]
- Wing: A large group of dragons (more than seven). May also be used to describe a large group of soldiers as a battalion.
- Winglet: A smaller group of dragons (seven or less).[6]
Pantalan Terms
- Hive-Mind: The term for when the HiveWings are under the control of Queen Wasp.
- Pod: A group of LeafWing soldiers, similar to a troop.[7]
- Reading Monkey: A term used by Cricket for a scavenger.[8]
- Scales: Dragon currency in Pantala.[9]
- Whole-Hive-commands: Is a term used by Katydid when Queen Wasp takes control of an entire hive.[10]
Human Terms
- Ice Dragons/Arctic Dragons: The human term for IceWings.
- Mountain Dragons/Sky Dragons/Fire Dragons: The human term for SkyWings.
- Night Dragons: The human term for NightWings.
- Rainforest Dragons: The human term for RainWings.
- Sand Dragons/Desert Dragons: The human term for SandWings.
- Sea Dragons/Ocean Dragons: The human term for SeaWings.
- Swamp Dragons/Mud Dragons: The human term for MudWings.
- Aquatic: The SeaWing tribe's underwater language, communicated through talon signals and glowing scales that only SeaWings have the ability to do.
- Dragon: The language used by dragons.
- The old language: The language originally used by Pantalans before Clearsight's arrival.
- Human: The language used by humans.
- Leafspeak: A gift some LeafWings are born with. Used to understand and speak the languages of different plants, among other things.
Objects
Pyrrhian Objects
- The Orb in the Sky: The comet or asteroid that appeared in the events of The Brightest Night.
- Skyfire: A mysterious black rock that fell out of the sky that blocks mind-reading (found and worn by Turtle and Onyx).[11]
Pantalan Objects
- Treestuff: A term used to describe a mixture of wood pulp, clay, silk, and other materials used to build hives.[12]
Ceremonies
- Circle rankings: Circle rankings were used by the IceWings for ranking the obedience and skill of the tribe's population. Dragons who ignored the Circles were frowned upon by the rest of the tribe and are considered outcasts. The Circle rankings are currently no longer used after the events of The Dangerous Gift.
- Diamond Trial: A trial formerly used by the IceWings. It was a competition where a Seventh Circle IceWing dragonet challenges a First Circle dragonet for their position. If completed properly, one contestant would always die. The Diamond Trial became defunct after the events of Winter Turning.
- Talons of Power ceremony: A ceremony where two-year-old SeaWings test to see if they are animus dragons.[13]
Titles
Dragon Titles
- Dragonet: A baby dragon or a child dragon up to seven years old.
- Queen: The female ruler or monarch of a tribe.
- King: Husband of the queen, or, in the case of Darkstalker, the male ruler of a tribe.
- Commander: A rank in the IceWing, LeafWing, and SeaWing armies.
- General: A rank in the LeafWing, SandWing, and SeaWing armies.
Pyrrhian Titles
- Animus: A dragon with the ability to enchant both inanimate objects and living beings.
- Bigwings: The eldest of a group of MudWing siblings, also known as sibs. The bigwings is always the leader of the group.
- Sibs: The term for MudWing siblings.
- Unsibs: The term for MudWings who join a new group of MudWing siblings when they lose too many of their sibs.
- Clawmates: Dragonets attending Jade Mountain Academy who share a cave, usually in groups of two or three. Similar to the term "roommates" or "classmates."
- Firescales: A SkyWing hatched with too much fire. SkyWings with firescales involuntarily set things on fire by touch.
- Fireless: A SkyWing hatched with little fire. They are unable to breathe fire and are oddly colored.
Pantalan Titles
- Flamesilk: A SilkWing born with the condition to be able to produce silk capable of setting inflammable objects on fire.
- Lady: A title used for female members of the Pantalan royalty who are not Queen or princesses.[14]
Human Titles
- Dragonmancers: A leader(s) in the village of Talisman who pretends to be able to have visions of dragons.
- Lords: A title used for a male human ruler. It is unknown if Lady is also used.
Organizations
Pyrrhian Organizations
- Outclaws: A group of dragons that was led by Thorn, who were in charge of the Scorpion Den.
- Talons of Peace: An organization that was previously led by Nautilus to stop the War of SandWing Succession.
- Talons of Power: An organization of dragons, mainly SandWings, led by Vulture to place Onyx or him in power.
- The Enclave: A type of organization or leader system used in Possibility.
Pantalan Organizations
- Chrysalis: An organization on Pantala solely made up of SilkWings to bring down the reign of Queen Wasp.
- PoisonWings: LeafWings who worked to take down Queen Wasp after the Tree Wars.
- SapWings: LeafWings who peacefully lived in the jungle.
Human Organizations
- Wingwatchers: Humans in Valor who observe and study dragons.
Abbreviations
Dragon Abbreviations
- AS: Short for After Scorching. It is used as a way to measure years.
Human Abbreviations
- IC: An abbreviation for the Indestructible City used by Grove.
Slang
Pyrrhian Slang
- Blazing: A term often used to express awe or astonishment towards something. It was commonly used by Peril in The Dragonet Prophecy. E.g., "That was blazing! I want to try that again!"[15]
- Blood-red eggs and fireballs: An exclamation used by Thorn.[16]
- Bright smashing suns: An exclamation used by Thorn.[17] E.g., "The market's on fire?! Bright smashing suns!"
- Buckets of gizzards: An exclamation used by Peril.[18] E.g., "Buckets of gizzards! Go OUT already!"
- Beetle brain: An insult used by Qibli,[19] similar to "Bird brain".
- By all the lizards: An exclamation used by Dune.[20] E.g., "By all the lizards, she is going to get crushed."
- By all the moons: An exclamation used to express frustration or disbelief.[21]
- By all the serpents: A remark used by Onyx.[22]
- By all the shining moons: A exclamation used by Darkstalker.[23]
- By all the snakes: A remark used by Darkstalker.[24]
- By all the snow monsters: A remark used by Winter.[25][26]
- By all the whales: A remark used by Octopus.[27]
- By the circle of snakes: A remark used by Prickle.[28]
- By the Scorching: An exclamation used by Listener.[29]
- By the teeth of the Great Ice Dragon: A remark used by IceWings. It was used by Icicle.[30] E.g., "By the teeth of the Great Ice Dragon this plan better work."
- Camel Farts: A mild exclamation similar to "dang it," "darn it," etc. It was used by Qibli,[31] with similar expressions used by Thorn. E.g., "Camel farts! Why didn't that work?"
- Cleverclaws: A saying used by Darkstalker[32] as a friendly or mild insult, possibly also used as a compliment. It was also used by Cobra.[33] Similar to the terms "genius" or "smarty-pants," and usually used in a sarcastic manner. E.g., "Which one of you cleverclaws did this?"
- Creeping tentacle: An insult used by SeaWings.[34]
- Crocodile Spawn: An insult used by Six-Claws.[35]
- Camel-chewing, snore-a-minute son of a toad: An insult used by Thorn.[36]
- Desert-Munchers: An insult used to describe SandWings. A dragon living in Possibility was seen writing the phrase in red paint.[37]
- Don't be a rotting tooth: An insult towards a grumpy dragon. It was used by Tsunami.[38] E.g., "Don't be a rotting tooth about this."
- Dung-snorting hippo-heads: An insult used by Qibli. [39]
- Fancyscales: A compliment used by Qibli, similar to "Fancy-pants." E.g., "A writer! So fancyscales."[40]
- Fiddlesquids: A SeaWing exclamation of annoyance, similar to "fiddlesticks". It was used by Webs.[41] E.g., "Fiddlesquids! I was late to class again."
- Fire-breathing sky: An expression used by Darkstalker.[42] E.g., "The rain poured from a fire-breathing sky."
- Flappity tadpole: A lighthearted insult used by Egret.[43]
- For moon's sake: An expression used by Tsunami.[44] Similar to the phrase "for god's sake" or "for heaven's sake."
- Fourth moons and fireballs: An exclamation used by Thorn. It is used to express shock or awe.[45]
- Frog-faced blob of camel spit: An insult used by Thorn.[46] It was later used by Sunny.[47]
- Frog spit and goat tongues: An exclamation of frustration. Ex-Queen Scarlet used it.[48]
- Galaxies and geckos: An expression used by Clearsight.[49] E.g., "Galaxies and geckos! What is wrong with me?!"
- Go sit on a reef: An expression used by Anemone.[50] Similar to the phrase "go take a hike" or "go fly a kite" or "go sit on a thumbtack."
- Great Ice Spirits: An expression used by Snowfall.[51]
- Great kingdoms: An exclamation of shock used by Indigo.[52]
- Great starfish: An expression used by Indigo.[53]
- Hot as blazes: An expression used to describe the weather.[54]
- Holy Coconuts: An exclamation of surprise used by Kinkajou.[55] Similar to the phrase "holy cow!"
- Holy mother of lava: An exclamation of surprise used by Deathbringer.[56]
- Holy smoking vipers: An exclamation of surprise used by Qibli.[57]
- I don't give two smoldering coyotes: A phrase used by Fierceteeth.[58] Similar to the phrase "I don't give two craps."
- Igloo-Face: An insult for an IceWing, used by Qibli.[59]
- Indecisive jellyfish: An insult used by Pearl.[60] E.g. "Don't be an indecisive jellyfish."
- In the same current: An idiom used by Qibli.[61] Similar to the phrase "in the same shoes."
- In the scales: A phrase used by Darkstalker.[62] Similar to the phrase "in the flesh."
- Jerboa-head: An insult used by Thorn.[46]
- Jumping poison frogs: An expression of exasperation used by Kinkajou.[63]
- Kelp-breath: A SeaWing insult used by Anemone.[64]
- Kelp Face: A SeaWing insult used by Clearpool.[65]
- Lazy RainWing: An insult and a stereotype.[66]
- Leaping barracudas: An exclamation used by Indigo.[67]
- Like sand through my talons: An expression used by SeaWings.[68]
- Lizards: An insult that compares a dragon to a lizard, used by Kestrel.[69]
- Moon eel An insult used by SeaWings.[34]
- Moons-Blasted: An exclamation of irritation with something; an equivalent to the term "blasted", used by Six-Claws.[35] E.g., "That moons-blasted idiot took my scroll!"
- Moonfire and star vomit: A exclamation of pain used by Darkstalker.[24]
- Moonlickers: An insult used by Thorn.[70]
- Monkeys and mangoes: An exclamation used by Kinkajou.[71]
- Mollusk: A lighthearted insult used by Fin.[72]
- Melon-brain: A lighthearted insult used by Glory.[73]
- My tail: An exclamation used by Scarlet,[74] used to express when someone is lying. E.g., "Just following orders- my tail."
- Not the sharpest claw on a dragon: An expression used to comment on the wits of a particular dragon in a negative way. Similar to "not the sharpest tool in the shed." It was used by Fierceteeth.[75]
- Oh monkey brains: A phrase used by Kinkajou.[76]
- On the same roll of the scroll: A saying used by Qibli that is similar to "on the same page."[77]
- Pain in the tail: Similar to the phrase "pain in the neck" or "pain in the backside". It was used by Bromeliad.[78] E.g., "That moron is such a pain in the tail!"
- Pompous worm-faced snob-head camel turd: An insult used by Thorn.[79]
- Put all your eggs into one nest: An idiom used by Crocodile.[80] Similar to the phrase "put all your eggs into one basket."
- Sand Snorter: An insult used by Thorn[81] and Prickle.[28] E.g., "Stop being such a sand snorter!"
- Salamander: An insult used by Darkstalker.[82]
- Make anyone's scales crawl: A creeping sensation of dread and fear, similar to "make anyone's skin crawl."[83]
- Screaming scavengers: An expression used by Clearsight.[84] E.g., "Screaming scavengers! It sounds just like Professor Truthfinder."
- Scrollworm: A term used to describe someone who is interested in scrolls and similar to the phrase, "bookworm." It was used by Moonwatcher.[85]
- Sea cucumber: An insult used by Coral.[86] E.g., "She is being quite a sea cucumber about it."
- Sea urchin up their snout: An insult used by SeaWings.[34]
- Seal Guts: An expression used by Winter[87] to indicate disgust or frustration. E.g., "There was a SkyWing! [...] It attacked me and stole my prey and then disapp — oh, SEAL GUTS!"
- Shark bait: An insult used by SeaWings.[34]
- Slime weasel: An insult used to describe someone. It was used by Foeslayer.[88]
- Smoke-breather: An insult of sorts, usually used to describe a lazy or whiny dragon. It may be used mainly by non-firebreathing tribes. It was used by Tsunami.[89] E.g., "Don't be a smoke-breather! Let's go!"
- Snapper got your tail?: An expression used by SeaWings.[68]
- Slithering over my grave: A figure of speech dragons use to describe that something bad is going to happen. It was used by Anemone.[90] It is equivalent to the human phrase, "someone had walked over my grave."
- Snakes and centipedes: A phrase used by Foeslayer.[91]
- Snort a bucket of worms: A phrase used by Darkstalker.[92]
- Snail-brain: An insult equivalent to squid-brain used by Moonwatcher.[93]
- Snail droppings: A SeaWing exclamation of exasperation, used by Tsunami.[94]
- Snails-for-brains: An insult used by Thorn.[70]
- Son of a Slug: An insult used by Anemone.[95] E.g., "Let's go kill that son of a slug!"
- Son of a Starfish: An expression of shock used by Tempest.[96]
- Sponge-snout: An insult used by SeaWings.[34]
- Squid-brain: An insult, calling someone stupid or unintelligent, used by SeaWings.[97] It is represented by three flashes of the tail-stripes in Aquatic. E.g., "You'd better learn some respect, squid-brain."
- Squid guts: An expression used by Anemone.[98]
- Squid-head: An insult similar to squid-brain, used by Tsunami.[99] E.g., "He was probably one of the squid-heads who made the decision not to teach me."
- Stub a claw: Similar to the phrase "stub a toe." It was used by Tsunami.[100]
- Stuck-up barnacle: An insult used by SeaWings.[34]
- Swimming over my grave: A figure of speech dragons use to describe that something bad is going to happen. It was used by Indigo.[101] It is equivalent to the human phrase, "someone had walked over my grave."
- Talons and Tails: A mild exclamation, often used in frustration. It was used by Ostrich.[102] E.g., "Talons and tails, he got away!"
- Talons and Teeth: A mild exclamation of pity Darkstalker used.[103] E.g., "Talons and teeth, you poor little dragonet."
- Tail kisser: An insult Carnelian used to describe Kinkajou.[104]
- Teeth of the Viper: A remark used by Thorn to express frustration.[17]
- The Three Moons in a bowl: Remark used by Coral.[105] It means one expects too much. E.g., "She's asking for the three moons in a bowl with this project!"
- Three Moons: (and multiple variations of) Exclamation of surprise or exasperation; reference to the three moons. Similar to the expression "good grief". E.g., "Three moons, you scared me."[106]
- Viper-Licking: An expression of annoyance. It was used by Tsunami.[107] E.g., "What kind of viper-licking idiot are you?"
- Walrus-Breath: An insult, used by Lynx.[108]
- What in the sun: An expression of shock used by Ruby.[109] Similar to the phrase, "What in the world?"
- Wild scavenger chase: An idiom used by Pyrite.[110] Similar to the phrase, “wild goose chase".
- Who in the blazes: An expression of shock used by Thorn.[111] E.g., "Who in the blazes are you?"
- Who stuck an icicle up their snout: An expression used by Foeslayer.[88]
- You look like you've been shocked by an eel!: An expression used by SeaWings.[68]
Pantalan Slang
- Ants-for-brains: An insult used by Swordtail,[112] similar to the phrase, "crap for brains." E.g., "Those ants-for-brains guards didn't stab me the right way this time!"
- Acorn: An insult used by Sundew.[113] E.g., "No, you acorn."
- Arrogant panther-butt face: An insult used by Belladonna.[114]
- By all the silk: A remark used by Luna.[115]
- By the book: An expression used by Cricket,[116] signaling concern. E.g., "By the book, where has he been?"
- Banana Slug: An insult used by Luna.[117] E.g., "No, you lazy banana slug".
- Beehive Brain: A mild insult used by Sundew.[118]
- Bees for brains: An insult used by Sundew.[119]
- By the Hive: Remark used by Pantalans to signal astonishment or irritation. It was used by Weevil.[120] E.g., "By the Hive, what a bore it must be to be wingless."
- Eat bugs: Remark used by Admiral to Danaid, similar to the phrase "eat dirt."[121]
- Face me like a reptile: A taunt used by Sundew.[122] It is similar to "face/fight me like a man."
- For the love of trees: An expression of exasperation used by Sundew.[123] Similar to the phrase, "for the love of god".
- From horns to clawtips: A statement used by Cricket.[124] Similar to the real-life phrase, "From head to toe."
- Go sit on a nettle: An expression of frustration used by Belladonna.
- Go snort a poisonous toad: An insult used by Belladonna.[114]
- I couldn't give two honeydrops: A statement used by Luna.[125] Similar to the real-life phrase "I don't give two craps."
- I don't care two frogs: A statement used by Sundew.[126] It is similar to "I don't give two craps."
- Level the wind currents: A metaphor used by Belladonna.[127] It is similar to "level the playing field."
- Moon-Moth: A term used by Cricket to describe a romantic or lovestruck dragon.[128]
- Out of claw: A saying used by HiveWings. Similar to the phrase "out of hand."[129]
- Snakes and silkworms: A term used by Luna.
- Son of a HiveWing: A term used by Sundew to express frustration.[130]
- Talons and Tentacles: An exclamation used by Lizard to express frustration.[131]
- Thank Clearsight: A remark used by HiveWings and SilkWings, similar to "Thank goodness." It was used by the Librarian.[132] E.g., "Thank Clearsight you're okay!"
- Trolls: An insult that was used by Admiral. It is similar to the use of "jerks."[133]
- What in the Hive: A remark used by Pantalans to signal astonishment, shock, or annoyance. It was used by Cricket.[134] Similar to the phrase, "What in the world?" E.g., "What in the Hive ...?"
Human Slang
- By the stars: An exclamation used by Ivy.[135] E.g., "By the stars, I think that's an ice dragon."
- Fire butts: An exclamation of frustration. It was used by Wren.[136] E.g., "Oh, fire butts."
- Holy dragon scales: An expression used by Wren.[137] It is similar to "Holy smokes." E.g., "Holy dragon scales. Who are you?"
- Oh my stars: An expression used by Daffodil.[138] It is similar to "Oh my god." E.g., "Oh my stars. Actual. Magic."
- Old toad: An insult used by Wren.[139]
- Wings above: An exclamation of shock, irritation, or fear. It was used by Wren.[140] E.g., "Wings above! Stop standing around and help me!"
