Literature is an extraordinarily prevalent part of Pyrrhia's culture. Scrolls are written and read by the majority of the dragon tribes. They are printed with ink on an unconfirmed type of paper (although, it is likely vellum or parchment, as hinted at by Starflight).[1] Dragons are almost always shown writing on scrolls by dipping their claws in ink and scratching the paper.[2] Sometimes dragons use things like reeds to write. For example, in Winter Turning, Moonwatcher is shown using a "long, thin reed" to draw the mountain she saw in Icicle's dream.[3]
Tundra made Winter memorize stories of dragons attempting the Diamond Trial, revealing that IceWings can read.[6] He also mentioned IceWing sagas that "told the history of the world".[7] In the outer Ice Kingdom villages, writers use sealskin for scrolls that are carried by wandering librarians circulating the outer villages.[8]
In The Poison Jungle, Hazel was seen making books.[9] Before the Tree Wars, the LeafWings had several libraries that they had to abandon when they fled to the Poison Jungle, leading many HiveWings to believe that LeafWings could not read. Literature is very important to their tribe.[10]
Pheasant said she was reading about the Prophecy, hinting that MudWings sometimes read scrolls.[11] MudWings are shown to be capable readers once more when Sora was seen reading a scroll in the school library.[12]Queen Moorhen mentioned how she had read Queen Coral's scrolls before, giving more evidence of literacy in MudWings.[13]Bullfrog mentioned having read history books, implying that MudWings have textbooks.[14] There is a library in the MudWing palace with scrolls from ancient Mud Kingdom times.[15]
The NightWings both read and wrote many scrolls, several NightWings such as Starflight, Mastermind, and Moonwatcher are fascinated by and enjoy reading scrolls. There used to be extensive and impressive libraries on the NightWing Island[16] and in the lost city of night.[17] The NightWings were the first tribe to develop a written Dragon language which they then taught to the other tribes so that history could be recorded. Their ancient scrolls mentioned traveling NightWing teachers who brought scrolls to every tribe on Pyrrhia.[18] The NightWings would copy scrolls by talon in order to distribute them across the continent.[19]
RainWings did not read scrolls and never knew about them or the rest of Pyrrhia for hundreds of years before Glory claimed the RainWing throne.[20]Sunny was seen teaching a RainWing dragonet class how to read.[21] and Kinkajou went to a nearby school to get some paper and a blank scroll for Moonwatcher to draw on and record what she saw in Icicle's dream.[22] There is also a very old RainWing scroll in the library in Possibility from over a thousand years ago. Although they did not use scrolls in modern times, the RainWings still told stories through oral storytelling traditions passed down through history. They once had libraries and traded scrolls with other tribes.[23]
Thorn, during her time spent as the leader of the Outclaws, had been shown writing wanted posters.[24] During her reign, Oasis had a system that intercepted messages written on scrolls.[25] Sunny, Thorn, and Smolder also went into a room in the SandWing fortress that had many scrolls.[25]
The SeaWings often read scrolls, most of which are written by Queen Coral. SeaWing scrolls are written with a mixture of squid ink and a whale blood, a mixture concocted by Whirlpool, to make the words permanent and waterproof.[2]
It is known that SilkWings read books.[26] During the reign of Wasp, the SilkWings learned how to read and write in school for the sole purpose of being able to work certain jobs or be exposed to propaganda.[27]
Peril lied to Scarlet about reading about the Champion's Shield in a scroll, and Queen Scarlet replied, saying, "with claws that burn through paper right when you touch it."[28] They also use scrolls for messaging.[29]

It is Willow's favorite book.[91] The title of the book, combined with Willow's description of Ash as a "heroine who is always dreaming up stories" and Guava as a "dragon who annoys her,"[91] suggests that it may be a reference to Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
The Book of Clearsight.Book of Clearsight — A book made by Clearsight which mentions possible futures along with a map of the only known travel route between the two continents, which was hidden in the back cover.[92]
HiveWing School Curriculum — A book written by Cricket (with insight from some unnamed SilkWings) about the curriculum that was taught to HiveWings during Wasp's reign.[93]
Luna's Honey Drops Recipe — A recipe by Luna on how to make honey drops.[94]

Rules for Happiness and Prosperity in the Hives — A book by Io about the rules, school curriculum, and common professions SilkWings had under the rule of Wasp.[97]

The Count of Mount Kudzu — A book about a falsely imprisoned dragon and revenge. It is Sundew's favorite book.[91] The title of the book, combined with Sundew's description of the book's contents, suggests it is likely a reference to the book The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.
The Exceptionally Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Insects for the Discerning Entomologist — A book about insects. It is Mandrake's favorite book.[96]
The Legacy of the LeafWings — A book about the history of great LeafWing queens and their achievements. It is Sequoia's favorite book.[91]
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon — A book about a dragon on a journey to discover why he can not fly. It is Hazel's favorite book.[96] The title may be a reference to the book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin.
In The Lost Heir, one of the panels shows The Missing Princess, but written differently with dots in some of the letters. This shows an example of dragon letters.[104]
There are a few mentions of books in Pyrrhia. In Darkness of Dragons, Qibli mentioned a catalogue of books in the NightWing library.[105] Also, in The Dangerous Gift, while Lynx told Snowfall how she was not agreeable, Lynx mentioned reading a book.[106]
While living in the Poison Jungle, LeafWings used jungle ingredients for bookbinding such as glue made from sap, threads made from tree fibers, and dyed bark for covers.[103]
