- — Monarch about exiting the Barrier with the eggs, The Hybrid Prince
(Not to be confused with the other SilkWings, Monarch and Monarch, two of the greatest queens in SilkWing history.)
Monarch is an adult female SilkWing who was introduced in The Hybrid Prince. She was the last queen of the SilkWings, ruling before the Tree Wars about fifty years ago. She gave up her throne and allowed her tribe to be ruled by Queen Wasp and the HiveWings. Sometime after being imprisoned, a HiveWing named Glowworm helped her escape from Wasp Hive. They fled to the Court of Refuge and became trapped on the Dungeon Isle. Monarch was elected as a member of the Triumvirate, where she now helps rule the Court. She is the partner of Glowworm and the mother of Royal.
Description
Monarch is beautiful, with orange scales, long antennae, and blue and white markings along her wings and by her eyes. She has scars around her ankles and along her throat, and is missing one of her back claws. According to Umber, she looks like she has not slept in a really long time.[1]
Personality
Monarch loves her tribe and would do anything to protect her dragons. She is conflicted,[2] yielding, optimistic,[3] and doubtful.[4] She is also generous and trusting. She got anxious and sad at the threat of violence and would try keep peace, even if it meant giving up her power as queen.[3] She cares more about her tribe than her safety and ability to live a free life, but still wishes to be outside with her dragons.[5] Ultimately, she did choose to flee the continent, and ended up on the Dungeon Isle, however. She feels guilty about this.
Monarch was a true believer in Clearsight. Despite having doubts about the future that had been supposedly planned for her tribe under Queen Wasp's rule, she would remain faithful in her conviction and hope for the best.[5] It never occurred to her that Wasp might be lying about the contents of the Book of Clearsight, as she and her predecessors had been doing for generations in order to maintain an illusion of control.[6]
Biography
Pre-Series
Monarch ruled as Queen of the SilkWings. Her mother, Diadem, chose her to be the heir for the SilkWing throne. When Wasp wanted to take over all of the Pantalan tribes, lying about the Book of Clearsight. Monarch believed her, though she had doubts. To retain the safety of her tribe, she gave up her throne, and was subsequently imprisoned. Eventually, Glowworm helped her escape and they ended up at the Dungeon Isle.
The Lost Continent Prophecy
Blue wondered why Sequoia never accepted Queen Wasp's rule as Monarch did.
Sundew talked about how Sequoia did not back down like Monarch. Later, Hawthorn mentioned how Monarch did not ask questions about the Book of Clearsight when recounting the events leading up to the Tree Wars.
Luna mentioned that Wasp left no descendants from Monarch.
The Forgotten Isles Prophecy
Monarch was first seen when Platypus introduced Umber to the Triumvirate and the other exiled dragons. She apologized for Beryl and Snakeroot taking over the court, saying that losing tribes is a specialty of hers. She asked Umber about Royal, worried about how he was doing.
Her time as a ruler of the Court of Refuge and her escape from the Court of Refuge was later shown in the Memory Room. She is considerate to her people, and agrees with Tuatara and Horizon about giving a family more space. When Glowworm finally helped her fight to the edge of the crowd, she said they could not leave Royal behind, but Glowworm said that he needed living parents, urging her to escape to keep him safe.
She was present with the other Triumvirate members when Umber, Platypus, and Quokka came to visit after viewing memories including her overthrowing in the Memory Room.
When Umber, Platypus, Quokka, Mulberry, Dugong, and Sora came to the exiles and told them about the eggs, Glowworm said that they would be safe if they went out of the Barrier with the eggs, but Monarch said no, saying she does not want to run away again. After Borealis was caught spying, he told the group that there were dragons in the court wishing for them to return, and that that night would be the perfect time to come back. Considering this, she agreed to go with them and take back the court from Beryl and Snakeroot.
Monarch arrived with the other council members and the main group. She stood up to Beryl alongside Tuatara and Horizon, telling Beryl that her time is up. She said hello directly to one of the court citizens, making an effort to comment on how their dragonet must be great at catching hawks now. As soon as Beryl, Snakeroot, and Taipan were taken away to the dungeons, she and Glowworm ran to Royal, crying in a big family embrace. Then, she joined Horizon and Tuatara in hugging the dragons of the court, immediately taking new suggestions and catching up with them.
