Her sharp curved claws also shared this color{{Ref|L1|48}}. Whiteout was very strange and different from the other dragons in her tribe by the way she thought and talked. As Darkstalker described in ''Darkstalker'', she thinks unlike anyone else he has seen, since she thinks in colors and emotions, not words and pictures. She is seemed to be unaware of other dragons' distaste and hatred for her, however, she continues to treat everyone kindly, even though others might not have returned this favor.

This was demonstrated when Whiteout referred to [[Clearsight]] as "azure on the inside," most likely associating the color blue with good (as she used blue in most of her paintings) and that her brother's soul had no spots, but "Only stripes!" Clearsight noted that Whiteout either trusted completely or not at all. Whiteout was shown to be a caring and kind dragon, and she appeared to be an optimist. Whiteout was a female NightWing-IceWing hybrid dragonet who was introduced in Darkstalker. She attended the NightWing school and resided in the lost city of night until she fled the city alongside the rest of the NightWing tribe. She was in a relationship with Thoughtful and had weak mind reading and prophetic abilities. She was Darkstalker's younger sister and the daughter of Foeslayer and Prince Arctic.

Description

Whiteout had black scales with hints of dark sapphire blue, a narrow, elegant head, and startling cool,[1] pale[2] blue eyes[3] similar to Arctic's. Her icy-blue wings were dotted with jet-black scales. Her sharp, curved claws and the spines along her back were also icy bluish white.[3] She was quite beautiful[3] and strange-looking.[4] Darkstalker noted lots of minds thought that Whiteout was the most beautiful dragon on Pyrrhia.[3]

Personality

Whiteout's mind was peaceful and quiet.[5] It heavily differed from other brains, as if she thought in colors and waves instead of in words. Her brain would sometimes be so quiet that Darkstalker assumed that she must not be paying attention, and then she would make an observation that surprised him.[6] She never kept secrets; it was as if she thought that if she knew something, everyone must know it, as if everyone shared a mind.[7] She would have hated the stilted formality of palace functions,[8] and she was sweet,[9] interesting,[10] and gleeful.[11] She had a strange way of speaking,[12] and Clearsight got the impression that Whiteout was already gathering more information about her than a NightWing mind-reader upon meeting her.[2] She was considered strange by her peers[2] and either trusted completely or not at all.[10] When she was enchanted to speak the same way as everyone else, she thought all her words were coming out wrong.[13]

Biography

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Winter Turning
Whiteout, along with Arctic and Darkstalker, was indirectly mentioned by Foeslayer, when she encountered Winter and Hailstorm. During their confrontation, Foeslayer denied wanting to know the length of time that she had been imprisoned within the Diamond Caves, claiming that she would "never see them again anyway" in reference to her family.
Talons of Power
When Clay and Sunny first meet Darkstalker at Jade Mountain Academy, he mentioned that Sunny must be descended from his sister Whiteout, because her father, Stonemover, was an animus dragon and Darkstalker did not have dragonets.
Darkness of Dragons
Whiteout was briefly mentioned when Darkstalker told Qibli about the future they could have, and that he should have enchanted Arctic to have been a better father to himself and Whiteout.

The Lost Continent Prophecy

Legends

Darkstalker

Whiteout and Darkstalker were in the same clutch of eggs, but Darkstalker's egg hatched first, on a night with three full moons. Darkstalker saw a future where he could help his sister hatch with him and also have powers; he decided against it, wanting all the love that was waiting for himself. Whiteout's egg did not hatch until the next day when the moons were no longer full.

Whiteout was first seen in their home, trying to block out the sound of her parents' argument with her wings. Darkstalker came in and comforted her, before jutting into his parents' frenzied quarrel.

She was later seen at the NightWing school beside Clearsight, accompanied by Darkstalker. During the afternoon, Whiteout approached Clearsight to talk to her. Listener, who was beside Clearsight, told her about how strange Whiteout was and used the nickname "Weirdout" as she approached them. Whiteout asked Clearsight if she was the dragon Darkstalker was looking for, and Clearsight told her the truth, because it would be important in the future that Whiteout trusted her.

Later, Clearsight saw Whiteout again, walking and mumbling to herself. Whiteout accidentally walked right over a game of marbles and scattered them everywhere. The three NightWings then started yelling at Whiteout before Darkstalker "materialized out of the shadows," and stopped them. When he told Whiteout why the dragons were upset and asked her to apologize, she responded with, "Oh, I thought the marbles represented chaos theory and I was just another unpredictable whim of the universe."

During dinner when Arctic revealed Darkstalker was an animus, Whiteout referred to Clearsight as 'azure on the inside' and said "that's all right; he's not going to snow for a while," she was talking about Darkstalker's soul. This meant that Clearsight was good, and Darkstalker would stay good for a little longer.

After Clearsight and Darkstalker frantically flew to his home to find Foeslayer, Whiteout was found keening, as if in pain, in the living room, where she had been for the past hour. Clearsight comforted her while Darkstalker confronted Arctic.

At Queen Vigilance's glass jubilee festival, Whiteout played Scales-and-squares along with Darkstalker and Fathom at the game area. There, she met Thoughtful when Clearsight introduced Whiteout to him. According to Clearsight, Thoughtful and Whiteout were destined for great love together, which was why she tried to keep her friend from ending up with him. When Whiteout first saw Thoughtful, she commented on how shiny his scales were and talked about his glass sculpture in her funny way of speaking. Thoughtful seemed to understand everything she was saying and was surprised and delighted that someone "saw the pieces of scroll inside the waves" in his glasswork. Thoughtful then challenged Whiteout to a game of Scroll Tower, which she gladly accepted, saying that he was going to die of awe.

One morning, Whiteout was found lying awake with a new necklace and talking uncharacteristically normally, which she thought did not sound right. She was then brought by her father, Arctic, across the Kingdom of Sand towards the Ice Kingdom before being stopped by Darkstalker. She explained to him that she wanted to go with Arctic and that she always hated Darkstalker, at which point Darkstalker realized her necklace was enchanted by Arctic so that Whiteout would follow him. Darkstalker then wrote a spell to make Arctic obey his every order and commanded him to smash the necklace he enchanted. Rather dazed, Whiteout then flew back to the Night Kingdom and was present for her father's rather violent self-disembowelment. After Arctic died, she started crying and Thoughtful pushed through the crowd to comfort her. When Darkstalker inquired on Clearsight's whereabouts and his scroll, Whiteout told him that Clearsight took the scroll and she would meet him on Agate Mountain.

Whiteout later fled the Night Kingdom, along with Thoughtful and the rest of the NightWing tribe. Whiteout was said to have lived happily with Thoughtful and had a family with him.

Relationships

Arctic

Whiteout was Arctic's daughter, and, according to Darkstalker, he often acted as though she was his only dragonet.[14] He openly preferred her over Darkstalker, probably because her IceWing genetics were more visible. Although Arctic seemed to spend time with Whiteout by taking her on outings and buying her special fish, Darkstalker thought that Arctic did not really care about her feelings,[15] and treated Whiteout like a necklace he could put on display and hang up afterwards.[3] Arctic showed disapproval of her feelings for Thoughtful, most likely because he was a NightWing.[16] Arctic also showed little consideration for who his daughter actually was as a dragon, using animus magic to alter Whiteout's personality — making her hate her brother, want to marry an IceWing, and live in the Ice Kingdom even if it meant she would be miserable there.[17] He also used his magic to change the way Whiteout spoke so she would sound "normal," revealing a desire for his daughter to be exactly how he wanted her to be: a "perfect" dragonet in contrast to Darkstalker.[12]

Darkstalker

Darkstalker was Whiteout's brother. They cared deeply for one another and were physically affectionate.[6] He became angry when his parents fought without regard for Whiteout's presence,[14] and spoke softly to her and brushed one wing over her back whenever she was upset.[3]

Darkstalker explored his sister's mind often, but he was never able to figure it out; he noted that Whiteout was "the only dragon who could surprise him", and he thought she was perfect the way she was.[6] Darkstalker also at one point deliberately stood up for Whiteout to impress Clearsight. When Darkstalker learned that Arctic was taking her to the Ice Kingdom, he immediately set out to hunt him down and bring him back to the lost city of night.[18]

Thoughtful

Whiteout and Thoughtful's future contained a great love,[19] and according to Clearsight's visions, they were meant for one another.[20] Whiteout described him as shining,[11] and he was surprised and pleased when Whiteout recognized him as the artist of the Cascade of Dreams.[11] He beamed when she accompanied him to participate in scroll tower.[20] After Darkstalker killed Arctic, Thoughtful came towards Whiteout through the crowd with worried eyes.[21] She lived a long and happy life with Thoughtful after Darkstalker's fall.

Trivia

  • Whiteout has illustrated many drawings of NightWings and IceWings living peacefully together, all painted in various shades of blue. It is stated she has also painted the three moons, constellations, and the night sky. Darkstalker told Clearsight he referred to the paintings as Whiteout's Wishful Thinking series.[27] She is quite talented with painting.
  • Sunny was confirmed to be a descendant of Whiteout. This is the only known possible way for the NightWings to have inherited the animus gene. Sunny also has Whiteout's eyes, as seen by Darkstalker.[28]
  • Whiteout has the same NightWing powers as Darkstalker does. However, since she hatched a day later than expected, her powers were pushed "deep inside."[event 1]
  • Whiteout is the first dragon in the series known to have an anomalous neurological phenomenon, as she possesses associative synesthesia.[event 2]
  • Whiteout lived a happy life after the fall of Darkstalker.[event 3]
  • Whiteout's granddaughter and thrice-great-grandson were animus dragons.[29]
