After being bullied by his elder sister, [[Princess Sapphire]], [[Prince Albatross]] discovered his magical abilities by commanding a mussel shell to "Bite her talons off!", leading to the loss of a potential candidate for the SeaWing throne, as the princess was no longer capable of performing queenly duties without her talons. To prevent any other such catastrophic event and to better make use of animus magic, a "ceremony" was devised in which dragonets would attempt to enchant something simple (generally a coconut, as seen in both examples of the event) to see if they had the animus gene.

Unlike the well planned giftings of the IceWing animus dragons, SeaWing animi are encouraged to use their power however their queen might please- no matter the state of their soul. Because of this, their ability is often abused, as seen in the cases on Albatross, Fathom, and Anemone.

The Talons of Power ceremony now takes place only once a year and is currently overseen by [[Queen Coral]] and [[Whirlpool]]. All of the SeaWing dragonets that turned two that year are taken to the [[Island Palace]] and provided with a coconut, though it isn't known what variety of spell they're supposed to attempt to cast upon it. The year that [[King Gill]] died, the ceremony was canceled.

The Talons of Power ceremony is an event where all two-year-old SeaWing dragonets are tested to see whether they have animus magic.

Description

The ceremony was devised due to the catastrophic discovery of Albatross's power.[1] SeaWing dragonets are instructed to perform a simple task, such as moving a coconut with animus magic. Any SeaWing who successfully performs the task is then declared an animus dragon.

Timeline

  • When Albatross was a dragonet, he accidentally enchanted a clam to bite all of Sapphire's claws off.[2] This event inspired the creation of the Talons of Power ceremony.
  • During the first ceremony, Queen Lagoon had the dragonets command the water to turn to ice, which Albatross criticized in a letter to her.[3]
  • During the second ceremony, Lagoon commanded Albatross to create a display of magic to inspire any animus dragonets, but instead scared them.[3]
  • Fathom participated in the third ceremony. He successfully ordered the coconut to hit Albatross and was declared an animus dragon.[4]
  • Turtle purposefully made himself sick at two years old and did not participate in the event.[5] No animus was announced that year.
  • When Turtle turned three, Queen Coral was guarding Anemone's egg and King Gill was taken by SkyWing forces. The ceremony was canceled for that year,[5] and the dragonets meant to take the test that year presumably took it the next year.
  • Turtle participated at four years old. He knew he was an animus and did not want to receive attention, so he enchanted Anemone to be an animus.[6] She successfully ordered the coconut to float and was declared an animus dragon, thus ending the ceremony.
