Literature is an extraordinarily prevalent part of Pyrrhia's culture. Scrolls are written and read by the majority of the dragon tribes. They are printed with ink on an unconfirmed type of paper, although it is likely vellum or parchment as hinted at by Starflight.[1] Dragons are almost always shown writing on scrolls by dipping their claws in ink and scratching the paper.[2] Sometimes dragons use things like reeds to write.[3]

In Pantala, books fill in the role of scrolls.

Tribes

HiveWings

HiveWings have textbooks in school for subjects such as biology.[4] There are also other educational books for subjects such as architecture.[5]

IceWings

Tundra made Winter memorize stories of dragons attempting the Diamond Trial, revealing that IceWings can read.[6] He also mentioned IceWing sagas that "told the history of the world".[7] In the outer Ice Kingdom villages, writers use sealskin for scrolls that are carried by wandering librarians circulating the outer villages.[8]

LeafWings

In The Poison Jungle, Hazel was seen making books.[9] Before the Tree Wars, the LeafWings had several libraries that they had to abandon when they fled to the Poison Jungle, leading many HiveWings to believe that LeafWings could not read. Literature is very important to their tribe.[10] While living in the Poison Jungle, LeafWings used jungle ingredients for bookbinding such as glue made from sap, dyed bark for covers, threads made from tree[11] and plant fibers, and paper made from wood pulp.[10]

MudWings

Pheasant said she was reading about the Prophecy, hinting that MudWings sometimes read scrolls.[12] MudWings are shown to be capable readers once more when Sora was seen reading a scroll in the school library.[13] Queen Moorhen mentioned how she had read Queen Coral's scrolls before, giving more evidence of literacy in MudWings.[14] Bullfrog mentioned having read history books, implying that MudWings have textbooks.[15] There is a library in the MudWing palace with scrolls from ancient Mud Kingdom times.[16]

NightWings

The NightWings both read and wrote many scrolls, several NightWings such as Starflight, Mastermind, and Moonwatcher are fascinated by and enjoy reading scrolls. There used to be extensive and impressive libraries on the NightWing Island[17] and in the lost city of night.[18] The NightWings were the first tribe to develop a written Dragon language which they then taught to the other tribes so that history could be recorded. Their ancient scrolls mentioned traveling NightWing teachers who brought scrolls to every tribe on Pyrrhia.[19] The NightWings would copy scrolls by talon in order to distribute them across the continent.[20]

RainWings

RainWings did not read scrolls and never knew about them or the rest of Pyrrhia for hundreds of years before Glory claimed the RainWing throne.[21] Sunny was seen teaching a RainWing dragonet class how to read,[22] and Kinkajou went to a nearby school to get some paper and a blank scroll for Moonwatcher to draw on and record what she saw in Icicle's dream.[23] There is also a very old RainWing scroll in the library in Possibility from over a thousand years ago. Although they do not use scrolls in modern times, the RainWings still told stories through oral storytelling traditions passed down throughout history. They once had libraries and traded scrolls with other tribes.[24]

SandWings

Thorn, during her time spent as the leader of the Outclaws, had been shown writing wanted posters.[25] During her reign, Oasis had a system that intercepted messages written on scrolls.[26] Sunny, Thorn, and Smolder also went into a room in the SandWing fortress that had many scrolls.[26]

SeaWings

The SeaWings often read scrolls, most of which are written by Queen Coral. Her scrolls are written with a mixture of squid ink and whale blood, a mixture concocted by Whirlpool, to make the words permanent and waterproof.[2] Dragonets in SeaWing schools read scrolls as part of their curriculum, mostly those written by Queen Coral.[27] SeaWings also write on stone slates in the deep palace as scrolls would get wet.[citation needed] The Seawings attend readings of Queen Coral's scrolls, and because of Queen Coral's love of writing, literature is highly valued in the Sea kingdom.[citation needed]

SilkWings

It is known that SilkWings read books.[28] During the reign of Wasp, the SilkWings learned how to read and write in school for the sole purpose of being able to work certain jobs or be exposed to propaganda.[29]

SkyWings

Peril lied to Scarlet about reading about the Champion's Shield in a scroll, and Queen Scarlet replied, saying, "with claws that burn through paper right when you touch it."[30] They also use scrolls for messaging.[31]
