She was the one who asked Albatross how they were meant to tell a coconut to hit him, and then pointed out that it would just be easier to throw it. Later, while she, Fathom, and Pearl were at tutoring, Albatross sent a messenger for Fathom. Not wanting to leave his side, Indigo snuck away to watch what they were doing and found them at the Summer Palace. Albatross discovered her spying on them, saying that Queen Lagoon would "not be pleased that you've seen her most secret project." Indigo, characteristically, was defiant and acted as though she didn't care. When Fathom told her excitedly that he was about to do his first enchantment, Albatross told them that they were done with their first lesson and left them alone at the Summer Palace.

Indigo and Fathom begin to build a sea castle on the beach. As they do this, Fathom wonders why Albatross suddenly decided to quit. Indigo speculates that it's because he's old and boring and then asks to Fathom whether he thought the queen would stop them from being friends. Fathom declares that he would never let the queen do that. Because Indigo still looks worried, he uses his first enchantment to make an octopus out of driftwood for her, despite her protests that they should wait. Even so, Indigo loves it immediately and names the octopus Blob saying, "He's clearly a Blob. Aren't you Blob?"
Indigo and Fathom begun to build a sea castle on the beach. As they did this, Fathom wondered why Albatross suddenly decided to quit. Indigo speculated that it was because he was old and boring and then asked to Fathom whether he thought the queen would stop them from being friends. Fathom declared that he would never let the queen do that. Indigo still looked worried, so he used his first enchantment to make an octopus out of driftwood for her, despite her protests that they should wait. Even so, Indigo loved it immediately and named the octopus, Blob by saying, "He's clearly a Blob. Aren't you, Blob?"

Indigo is present at the start of The Royal SeaWing Massacre, and she and Fathom later run to one of the over-water pavilions to hide when they realize that Albatross is killing any dragon he can, instead of just dragons that he is mad at. Indigo also tells Fathom that he is the most likely next target. Indigo and Fathom are hiding under a boat when Albatross comes into the pavilion, and Indigo eventually gets out from under the boat and attacks Albatross, trying to give Fathom time to escape. Instead, Fathom orders the spears to kill his grandfather (Albatross) and Indigo seizes his snout to smother any spell he might try to cast. The spears eventually do kill Albatross, but Indigo falls and almost dies. Fathom saves Indigo's life using the pearl necklace that she was wearing. When the massacre ends, Fathom names Indigo as the dragon that killed Albatross, keeping his fatal use of his powers a secret. She is then named the 'Animus Killer.'
Before Indigo, Fathom, and Pearl left for the party in which the massacre took place, Pearl let Indigo borrow a pearl necklace from her, and then they left for the party after a short conversation. At the party, Queen Lagoon made Indigo get her a drink so that she could lecture Fathom, and she told Fathom to stop being friends with Indigo. When Albatross started killing dragons, Indigo and Fathom ran to one of the above-water pavilions to hide. Indigo told Fathom that he was the most likely next target. Indigo and Fathom were hiding under a boat when Albatross came into the pavilion, and Indigo got out from under the boat and attacks Albatross, trying to give Fathom time to escape. The spears eventually do kill Albatross, but Indigo fell and almost died. Fathom saved Indigo's life by using the pearl necklace that she was wearing. When the massacre ends, Fathom named Indigo as the dragon that killed Albatross, keeping his fatal use of his powers a secret. She was then named the 'Animus Killer.' After Pearl was crowned the new queen of the SeaWings, she made Indigo part of her royal guard, and made Fathom promise to never have dragonets with her.

Years pass until Indigo sees Fathom again. Queen Pearl kept the two dragonets away from each other because it was clear they were in love. When Fathom finds out about Darkstalker being an animus, he decides to go to the Night Kingdom, and Indigo volunteers to go with him. They also take two other guards, Wharf and Lionfish. When they arrive, they attend a party where they first meet Darkstalker. Indigo is immediately suspicious of Darkstalker, even to the point where she holds a razor-sharp dagger to his throat. That is when Darkstalker makes up his mind that he needs to 'dispose of' Indigo.

A few weeks, even a month pass, and Darkstalker gets his chance. He enchants a pebble to, when thrown into the room Indigo is in, trap her inside the carving of a SeaWing Fathom made for him. For a good part of the story, she is inside the carving. Nobody knows whether she was conscious or not while she was trapped, or whether it felt like a year or a day to her. Fathom finally gets her out, clutching the carving and enchanting it to release her. While he did that, Clearsight was trapping Darkstalker under the mountain.

Blob
At first, Indigo distrusted Clearsight but gradually warmed up to her as she proved to be a trustworthy friend. As she was the one to take Darkstalker down, she eventually named one of her dragonets, Clearpool, after her.
Blob snuggled in close to Indigo, and often sat atop her shoulder. Indigo was delighted to have him,L1 and loved him very dearly.L1 She was happy and joyful when they were reunited before leaving the lost city of night.L1

Darkstalker
Almost immediately after meeting Darkstalker, Indigo did not trust him and often thought of him in a similar way to Albatross. She almost kills him not too long after their first introduction, but Fathom talked her out of it. Darkstalker wanted revenge, so she was eventually trapped in a dragon carving by Darkstalker, and Indigo was stuck in there until near the end of the book where Fathom used his animus magic to free her.
Darkstalker was hostile towards Indigo, and while the NightWing attempted to convince Fathom to loosen his hold on his magic, Indigo encouraged him to keep it under strict control.L1 She was suspicious of Darkstalker,L1 and after she destroyed the goblet he bought for Fathom, he looked consumed with rage.L1 She considered Darkstalker to be manipulativeL1 and constantly watched him to ensure that he did not harm Fathom.L1 She stated that Darkstalker was definitely evil.L1

Fathom
Fathom
Throughout his whole life, Fathom has shown great compassion for Indigo and she is shown to reciprocate the feeling. The two dragons knew each other since dragonethood, and Indigo often brought Fathom what he needed before he asked for it.L1 Due to her bond with Fathom, she was invited to royal family gatherings despite being the only one there without royal blood.L1 When Albatross went mad after using too much animus magic, she tried to kill Albatross herself. Although in the end, she survived by Fathom's magic, she was ready to sacrifice herself for Fathom to distract Albatross. After the SeaWing Massacre, Queen Pearl separated Indigo from Fathom as she forced Fathom to swear an oath to never have dragonets from fear of having any more animus dragons. Fathom was separated from Indigo for a year to make sure Fathom kept to his oath, which greatly saddened him as he often felt lonely without his friend.
Since they were tiny dragonets, Fathom was Indigo's best friend. He rarely went anywhere without her, and they'd been together almost since hatching.L1 Some of Fathom's memories alongside her included claw painting, hours spent carving a dolphin out of wood for her, filling out their fish journals for every variety in the sea, and her teasing him for taking their tutors so seriously.L1 Fathom considered her smile the best in Pyrrhia, and they were often physically affectionate.L1 He was reassuring towards her,L1 and his affection towards her was noticeable to other dragons.L1 He looked at her like he loves her, and created treasure for her out of his own talons; likewise, she brought him what he needed before he asked for it.L1 He considered their relationship platonic until the night of the Royal SeaWing Massacre, when he realized that the happy flutters in his heart whenever he saw Indigo indicated that he was in love with her.L1L1

When Fathom was sent to the Night Kingdom by Pearl, Indigo volunteered to go with him as a bodyguard. Even though Pearl disapproved, she had to let Indigo go as Indigo was a hero to the tribe. Indigo was very protective of Fathom when they were in the Night Kingdom (as shown when Indigo nearly killed Clearsight when she tried to hug Fathom) because she feared Darkstalker trying to use his magic on Fathom and on anyone Fathom cared about deeply. She became suspicious of Darkstalker almost immediately after meeting him and distrusted him forever.
In the massacre, Indigo was willing to die to save Fathom, and Fathom used his magic to save her life. After the massacre, Fathom considered being separated from Indigo the worst punishment of all.L1 Even after being separated from her for an entire year, seeing her in Pearl's throne room brought memories and longing and despair crashing back to Fathom. He would do anything to save her, even giving up his entire soul.L1 He wanted desperately for her to accompany him to the lost city of night, but also considered how dangerous it would be for Indigo.L1 She is protective towards himL1L1 and spent hours training after the massacre so that no dragon could hurt Fathom ever again.L1 She often felt sympathetic towards Fathom.L1 Despite her experiences with Albatross' animus magic, she did not consider Fathom dangerous, and he missed her very much while they were separated.L1 She refused to leave him, and trusted him immensely.L1

Indigo and Fathom could often get into conflict when she became overprotective, even as a guard. This could be shown once when she smashed an enchanted goblet that Darkstalker gave to Fathom as a gift, which angered Darkstalker and disappointed Fathom. In many other scenarios, Indigo warned Fathom of multiple seemingly harmless issues that he often tried to ignore. This often made Fathom exasperated and hurt Indigo's feelings, but she never stopped trying to protect him more than a normal bodyguard would do, unlike Wharf and Lionfish.
After Indigo smashed the goblet that Darkstalker created for Fathom, he chose Wharf to accompany him to the Royal Tower instead of Indigo. She was wrought with hurt and disbelief,L1 but although Fathom was upset with her, he understood her protectiveness, and wanted her to stay within their chambers for her own safety.L1

She was then enchanted by Darkstalker to turn into a wooden dragon figure that Fathom had carved, as Darkstalker found her an objection to his plans. She was eventually then "brought back to life" by Fathom when he realized that she had been right all along about Darkstalker. She told him she didn't care if he's an animus at all as long as he uses his powers for good. By five years after Darkstalker was enchanted to sleep eternally, she had three dragonets with Fathom. She and her family lived on a deserted island off the shore of the Rainforest Kingdom, far away from the Sea Kingdom's palaces, unknown to the rest of the tribe that they lived happily instead of fleeing along with the NightWings.
After fleeing the lost city of night and settling down together on an island near the Rainforest Kingdom, Indigo was eventually able to convince Fathom that it was all right for him to be happy, and that he was not a monster because of his animus magic.L1 She believed with all of her heart that Fathom had too much kindness and goodness in him to ever end up like Albatross and Darkstalker.L1

Indigo feared the queen due to how openly the latter disliked her.L1 Nevertheless, she tried to be respectful and obedient towards Lagoon.
Lagoon openly disliked Indigo, who was terrified by the queen.L1 She often glared at IndigoL1 and looked down her snout at the dragonet.L1 As Fathom grew older, her words towards Indigo became meaner and more pointed,L1 and she spoke to Indigo exactly as she did towards the servants.L1 She wanted Fathom to stop being friends with Indigo, as it was becoming obvious that his feelings for her were growing and the queen did not want him to marry a "low-born" dragon like Indigo.

Pearl
Pearl
For the majority of her life, Indigo and Pearl had a sisterly relationship, with Pearl always helping her to fit in with the royals. However, after the death of Albatross, Indigo was promoted to Pearl's Honor guard, and Fathom was ordered to stay away from her. Separating Indigo from her beloved Fathom chilled the relationship between Pearl and Indigo. As Fathom and Pearl made their oath Pearl also mentions that Indigo is also her friend and is just trying to keep her safe.
After the Royal SeaWing Massacre, Indigo was promoted to Pearl's honor guard, assigned to the squadron that protected Pearl herself, night and day. She rarely let Indigo leave her side.L1 This was mostly to keep Fathom and Indigo apart so they would never have dragonets together and produce possible animus dragons, which is what Pearl feared the most.L1

"Our choices are what make us good or evil — what we do, how we help or hurt the world. You make the world a better place by being in it. With or without your magic, that's always been true."
— Indigo to Fathom, Darkstalker

Indigo was an adult female SeaWing who was introduced in Darkstalker. She was the partner of Fathom and the mother of Clearpool, Cowrie, and Ripple. She formerly served as part of Queen Pearl's royal guard, and her last known whereabouts were an island off the coast of the Rainforest Kingdom.

Description

Indigo had deep blue scales that were almost purple,[1] dark purple-blue claws,[2] and dark purple eyes.[3] She moved with astonishing quickness.[4] Fathom described the SeaWing carving he gave to Darkstalker as having an "intelligent expression," which looked unmistakably like Indigo.[5] On the day of the Royal SeaWing Massacre, she wore a dark purple seaweed necklace that Fathom made for her.[6]

Personality

Indigo was firm,[7] clever,[4] curious,[8] defiant,[9] loyal,[10] brave,[11] intelligent,[12] courageous,[13] and protective.[4] She was said to be mischievous and funny, and enjoyed executing pranks alongside Fathom.[14] She distrusted most NightWings and strongly believed that Darkstalker was inherently evil, going as far as attacking him and holding a sharp metal disk to his throat.[4] She was also noted to be thoughtful and a good listener,[15] and she often spoke her mind.[16] She did not seem to care much about her physical appearance.[17] She was typically outwardly calm, despite her trauma resulting from the Royal SeaWing Massacre.[1] According to Darkstalker's soul reader, she had a lot of goodness within her heart.[18] She was glad that she was not an animus, and thought of the power as creepy.[19] When she was younger, she was implied to have a lot of screaming fits, similar to her daughter, Clearpool.[19]

Biography

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Talons of Power
Indigo was featured in one of Turtle's favorite scrolls. The story was about her saving the tribe from a deranged killer, Albatross, who almost massacred the entire royal family.

Legends

Darkstalker

During the animus test, Indigo fooled around and teased Fathom. Queen Lagoon and Albatross appeared and scolded her. She was the one who asked Albatross how they were meant to tell a coconut to hit him, and then pointed out that it would just be easier to throw it. When Fathom politely asked the coconut to hit Albatross, she teased him yet again, telling him that he was allowed to be mean to objects. When the coconut hit Albatross, she asked why Fathom had never told her. He replied that he had not known he was an animus.

Later, while she, Fathom, and Pearl were at tutoring, Albatross sent a messenger for Fathom. Not wanting to leave his side, Indigo snuck away to watch what they were doing and found them at the Summer Palace. Albatross discovered her spying on them, saying that Queen Lagoon would "not be pleased that you've seen her most secret project." Indigo, characteristically, was defiant and acted as though she did not care. When Fathom told her excitedly that he was about to do his first enchantment, Albatross told them that they were done with their first lesson and left them alone at the Summer Palace.

Instead, Fathom ordered the spears to kill his grandfather, and Indigo seized Albatross's snout to smother any spell he might try to cast.

A year passed until Indigo saw Fathom again. Queen Pearl kept the two dragonets away from each other because it was clear they were in love. When Fathom found out about Darkstalker being an animus, he decided to go to the Night Kingdom, and Indigo volunteered to go with him. They also take two other guards, Wharf and Lionfish. When they arrive, they attend a party where they first met Darkstalker. Indigo was immediately suspicious of Darkstalker, even to the point where she held a razor-sharp dagger to his throat. That was when Darkstalker made up his mind that he needed to 'dispose' Indigo.

A month passed, and Darkstalker got his chance. He enchanted a pebble to, when thrown into the room Indigo was in, trap her inside the carving of a SeaWing Fathom made for him. For a good part of the story, she was inside the carving. Fathom finally got her out many days later after reading the enchantment, clutching the carving and enchanting it to release her. While he did that, Clearsight was trapping Darkstalker under the mountain.

The two fly away to a secret island, never to be seen by the mainlanders again. They had three dragonets together: Cowrie, Ripple, and Clearpool. They passed animus blood down through the line until eventually one of their dragonets finds their way back to the other SeaWings.

Relationships

Blob snuggled in close to Indigo, and often sat atop her shoulder. Indigo was delighted to have him,[20] and loved him very dearly.[21] She was happy and joyful when they were reunited before leaving the lost city of night.[22]

Darkstalker was hostile towards Indigo, and while the NightWing attempted to convince Fathom to loosen his hold on his magic, Indigo encouraged him to keep it under strict control.[18] She was suspicious of Darkstalker,[23] and after she destroyed the goblet he bought for Fathom, he looked consumed with rage.[24] She considered Darkstalker to be manipulative[25] and constantly watched him to ensure that he did not harm Fathom.[26] She stated that Darkstalker was definitely evil.[7]

Since they were tiny dragonets, Fathom was Indigo's best friend. He rarely went anywhere without her, and they'd been together almost since hatching.[3] Some of Fathom's memories alongside her included claw painting, hours spent carving a dolphin out of wood for her, filling out their fish journals for every variety in the sea, and her teasing him for taking their tutors so seriously.[10] Fathom considered her smile the best in Pyrrhia, and they were often physically affectionate.[27] He was reassuring towards her,[28] and his affection towards her was noticeable to other dragons.[29] He looked at her like he loves her, and created treasure for her out of his own talons; likewise, she brought him what he needed before he asked for it.[30] He considered their relationship platonic until the night of the Royal SeaWing Massacre, when he realized that the happy flutters in his heart whenever he saw Indigo indicated that he was in love with her.[30][31]

In the massacre, Indigo was willing to die to save Fathom, and Fathom used his magic to save her life. After the massacre, Fathom considered being separated from Indigo the worst punishment of all.[32] Even after being separated from her for an entire year, seeing her in Pearl's throne room brought memories and longing and despair crashing back to Fathom. He would do anything to save her, even giving up his entire soul.[10] He wanted desperately for her to accompany him to the lost city of night, but also considered how dangerous it would be for Indigo.[11] She is protective towards him[33][34] and spent hours training after the massacre so that no dragon could hurt Fathom ever again.[4] She often felt sympathetic towards Fathom.[35] Despite her experiences with Albatross' animus magic, she did not consider Fathom dangerous, and he missed her very much while they were separated.[36] She refused to leave him, and trusted him immensely.[36]

After Indigo smashed the goblet that Darkstalker created for Fathom, he chose Wharf to accompany him to the Royal Tower instead of Indigo. She was wrought with hurt and disbelief,[25] but although Fathom was upset with her, he understood her protectiveness, and wanted her to stay within their chambers for her own safety.[37]

After fleeing the lost city of night and settling down together on an island near the Rainforest Kingdom, Indigo was eventually able to convince Fathom that it was all right for him to be happy, and that he was not a monster because of his animus magic.[38] She believed with all of her heart that Fathom had too much kindness and goodness in him to ever end up like Albatross and Darkstalker.[39]

Lagoon openly disliked Indigo, who was terrified by the queen.[2] She often glared at Indigo[16] and looked down her snout at the dragonet.[40] As Fathom grew older, her words towards Indigo became meaner and more pointed,[41] and she spoke to Indigo exactly as she did towards the servants.[29] She wanted Fathom to stop being friends with Indigo, as it was becoming obvious that his feelings for her were growing and the queen did not want him to marry a "low-born" dragon like Indigo.

Their relationship seemed to be positive and she did not seem to mind that Indigo had borrowed Pearl's jewelry to attend a diplomatic party. She also would compliment Indigo.[42] When Queen Lagoon ordered Indigo to go deep sea fishing, she stopped Indigo and went off fishing herself.[40]

After the Royal SeaWing Massacre, Indigo was promoted to Pearl's honor guard, assigned to the squadron that protected Pearl herself, night and day. She rarely let Indigo leave her side.[43] This was mostly to keep Fathom and Indigo apart so they would never have dragonets together and produce possible animus dragons, which is what Pearl feared the most.[44]
