Deep Palace

The Deep Palace is the underwater palace of the royal SeaWing family and other important SeaWings, located within the Kingdom of the Sea. It was constructed around the Royal Hatchery and is supposedly more magnificent than the Summer Palace.

Queen Coral is there year-round, with the exception of when there is business requiring her at the Summer Palace, such as a visit from Blister. It is also where the Royal Hatchery is, along with the enchanted statue of Orca, until Coral destroyed it after Tsunami discovered that it had been animus-touched to kill off all the female heirs to the throne. Now, all of the SeaWings reside in the Deep Palace, as the Summer Palace was destroyed by the SkyWings and MudWings.

Description

The Deep Palace is well hidden. A vast expanse of white-and-green coral reef spreads across the sides and floor of an underwater canyon, curling into caves and towers and gardens full of glowing colors. In the center of the canyon, the coral spirals up into an enormous palace. It contains windows and doors, as well as a wide front entrance composed of a coral cavern, sparkling with emeralds and sapphires. A statue of Queen Coral looms in the center, her talons outstretched benevolently. A outcropping of coral is hooked near the front door. It was where Queen Coral hung the bodies of SeaWings she killed for failing her. Past the front entrance, a tunnel curves down and around in a spiral, with the water becoming warmer as dragons descend. Warm jets of water bubble up through the coral on the floor, and at the end of the tunnel, a stone door is present — the entrance to the Royal Hatchery.

Within the main hall, the floor is composed of rough coral, and is surrounded by outcroppings of more coral. The palace is further composed of winding tunnels, cavernous rooms, emerald-studded coral, and pearl-laced curtains of golden sea grass. There is also a back entrance into the palace, leading into a room that seems to be a workshop containing sea grass weavings and marble carvings.

The palace's atmosphere is cool and dark, and it is surrounded by underwater canyons.

Notable features

Bubble Jet Garden

The bubble jet garden sits beyond one of the gardens by the palace. There are a few vents in the ocean floor that send jets of bubbles upwards, which dragonets like Auklet enjoy playing with.

Royal Hatchery

The Royal Hatchery is located at the bottom of a tunnel leading from the Deep Palace's front entrance. It is a pristine hatching place designed for royal dragonets, and eating within the hatchery is strictly forbidden, as it can attract sharks. The cave is covered by a stone door, and inside the hatchery, warm jets bubble along every smooth wall, heating the room. They were described to flow through tiny holes in the coral, surrounding the eggs in a bath of heat and small bubbles. It is shaped like the inside of a large, pale egg, with smooth, polished floors, and Orca's statue resided in the center until the events of The Lost Heir. Nests made of seaweed are tucked into niches in the floor, with wide pathways stretching in between them. Its interior is typically hot, still, dark, and quiet. Female and male eggs are separated on different sides of the hatchery, due to an animus enchanting it to separate them.

Unnamed classroom

An underwater classroom appearing in Darkstalker, this space was used for teaching geography. It contained at least one window and a pink coral ledge circling the interior of the room. The space was largely occupied by a large terrain model of the Kingdom of the Sea.

The Dragonet Prophecy

The Lost Heir

Coral went to the Royal Hatchery along with Tsunami, Anemone, and Moray, in fear of her eggs being smashed. She saw the broken egg shells and then disemboweled Tortoise. Later, when Auklet's egg started to hatch, Tsunami took it back to the Royal Hatchery and discovered that Orca's Statue had been killing off the eggs.

Darkstalker

Fathom was in the Deep Palace's underwater classroom when he was summoned to meet Albatross at the Island Palace for their first training session.

Fathom later mentioned that he had spent most of his time in a back room of the Deep Palace during the year after the Royal SeaWing Massacre.

Field Guides

A Guide to the Dragon World

The Deep Palace was mentioned in Coral's scroll about the War of SandWing Succession. The palace was also mentioned as being a setting from Coral's scrolls, When We Swam the Ocean Deep and The Island at the Beginning of Time. It was later mentioned by Anemone in her letter to Tamarin.
