"Apparently I'm a weird thing, because no one else is this color, and SkyWings are supposed to have fire."
— Sky to Wren, Dragonslayer

Template:Charbox Sky (or Ember) is a young male SkyWing who appeared in Dragonslayer and The Dragonet Prophecy (Graphic Novel) as well as being mentioned in The Dragonet Prophecy (novel). He was born with an inability to breathe fire, and is much smaller in size than normal SkyWings. Shortly after, Sky and his twin sister Peril's hatching, Queen Scarlet ordered their mother, Kestrel, to kill one of her newly-hatched dragonets. Kestrel threw Sky into a nearby river, but he was discovered a short time later by Wren who was the one who named him Sky. The two became great friends, and Sky is currently the first known dragon who can speak Human. He loves snails, and is a vegetarian.

Appearance

Sky is described to have small ears, large eyes and minuscule claws by Wren and that his scales are “the palest orange she’d ever seen, like a sunset painted on wool, then left under a waterfall or out in the sunlight for too long” or "the color of the palest sunset over the mountains".

He is a "very small, pathetic, skinny miniature of a dragon" and his eyes are described to be pale, watery blue, like a frosted-over puddle when he and Wren first met. His scales feel more like a lizard's, being "smooth and cool and a little pebbly, especially the softer scales under its chin and wings," but this may just be how all SkyWing—if not every—dragon’s scales are. He does not have smoke rising from his nostrils or the capability to sneeze or breathe fire, leading Wren to later conclude that he is fireless.

When Wren first found him, he was not much bigger than a rabbit. However, he is noted to be 'getting markedly bigger every time he went to sleep'. By chapter four of Dragonslayer, he was up to Wren's waist, and his wingspan was wider than her arms spread.

In The Dragonet Prophecy (Graphic Novel), he is shown to have salmon colored wings.

Personality

Sky is shown to be unusually silly, kind and gentle in nature, as well as very giggly and excitable. Despite his normally soft nature, he is capable of becoming angry, especially when those he loves are in danger. He loves animals, especially small creatures with shells (such as snails and baby turtles), and is prone to attempt to protect them or become excited every time he seems one. He is a vegetarian, likely because of his love for creatures.

Biography

Pre-Series

Kestrel and her newly-hatched twin dragonets were met by Queen Scarlet at the Diamond Spray River. Scarlet offered Kestrel forgiveness for her former disobedience if she killed one of her dragonets. Kestrel was believed to have killed Sky, the dragonet with too little fire, but it is probable that Kestrel hoped Sky would survive the river, considering she went searching for him shortly after his "death". Before Kestrel could reunite with him, however, Sky was rescued from a tangle of bushes downriver by Wren, after she had been sacrificed by the Dragonmancers. Wren was unaware of Kestrel and Sky's kinship, and as Sky appeared to be afraid of Kestrel as they watched her search, it can be assumed that he believed his mother had real intention to kill him.

Sky was first shown to be found by Wren, and rescued by her from a tangle of thorny plants.

Afterwards, Sky and Wren spotted Kestrel looking for Sky. Since Sky panicked at the sight of the older dragon, and Wren concluded that Kestrel was a threat to both of them, so they hid from her. After Kestrel leaves, Wren and Sky fled towards the Claws of the Clouds Mountains where they began to live in hiding.

A year later, Wren and Sky stumbled on a hole in the top of a mountain where they spot the dragonets of destiny in a cave below. Sky lamented on his inability to breath fire before being interrupted by Kestrel and Webs. Sky freaked out at the sight of Kestrel, presumably because Sky believed that Kestrel resented him for his lack of fire. He immediately left with Wren. Some time later, Sky traveled to a dragon city with Wren, likely the city of Possibility, where he was captured by General Sandstorm and was taken to Burn's Stronghold to be presented as a gift to Burn. Wren followed him to Burn’s Stronghold with the help of Deathbringer, called "Murderbasket" by Wren, and freed Sky from his chains with a key obtained by Rose.

Soon after, while Wren was riding Sky Cereus (more commonly known as "Sweetface") appeared, with Leaf on her back. Leaf and Wren were happily reunited, but Leaf ultimately decided to go back to Burn's Stronghold. Wren had trouble talking to "Sweetface", as she cooed about how adorable Wren was and how she wanted to "snuggle her and put little hats on her", so Sky had to explain to Sweetface about Leaf riding back on her. Sky continued to tease Wren about how she would look better in a little hat.

More flying in soon...

More than seven years after being separated from her kin, Peril realized the truth about Kestrel being her mother and about the supposed death of her twin brother during Kestrel's trial. Peril rejected Kestrel for Sky's supposed death at her talons, claiming "I may not want you dead, but I don't want to know you."

When Clay asked Peril to save Sunny for them, Peril jealously asked why Sunny was so important to Clay and his friends. Tsunami told her that Sunny was like a sister to them all, and asked if Peril would try to save her brother if he was here and alive. Peril thought for a moment and agreed that she would try to help. This shows that Peril and her brother might be friends if they meet in the future, or that Peril may feel a connection her brother despite never knowing him.

Trivia

  • Tui confirmed at the 2020 Barnes and Noble FanWing Fan Fest that Sky is Peril's brother.
  • He is said to be obsessed with snails, among turtles and other animals.
  • He is a vegetarian, being the first known SkyWing not to eat meat.
  • He is the first known dragon able to speak Human, although limited.
  • In Tui's annotation of The Dragonet Prophecy, she mentioned that in her first draft, Peril and Sky were in the prophecy, as well as an IceWing, but eventually decided that eight dragonets were too much.
    • She also said in this annotation that she would've named Sky 'Ember' if he'd survived.
  • Tui said that SkyWings with too little fire would have sickly pale red or orange scales and would become ill more easily than normal SkyWings.
  • Queen Scarlet led Peril to believe that she burnt Sky to a crisp while they were in their egg together as a result of her taking his fire.
  • Sky's unique case confirms that dragons can have eggs with two yolks (assuming they're the same as real eggs), as some birds that lay eggs with two yolks can hatch two offspring from that egg (like Peril and Sky).
