"Apparently I'm a weird thing, because no one else is this color, and SkyWings are supposed to have fire."
— Sky to Wren, Dragonslayer

Template:Charbox Sky is a young male SkyWing who appeared in Dragonslayer and was mentioned in The Dragonet Prophecy. He was born with little to no fire while his twin sister, Peril, was born with too much fire. This left him very weak upon his and Peril's hatching. Queen Scarlet ordered their mother, Kestrel, to kill one of the newly hatched twins, claiming she would spare the other along with Kestrel. Subsequently, Kestrel threw Sky into a river, possibly faking his death and telling him to pretend to drown, but he was shortly discovered later by Wren.

As a result, he befriends Wren, becoming both her best friend and traveling companion, and is currently the only dragon known to speak Human (though not very fluently). He is also vegetarian, either as a result of being around Wren, or because of his unusual love for small animals.

Appearance

Sky is described to have small ears, large eyes and minuscule claws by Wren and that his scales are “the palest orange she’d ever seen, like a "sunset painted on wool, then left under a waterfall or out in the sunlight for too long” or "the color of the palest sunset over the mountains".

He is "a very small, pathetic, skinny miniature of a dragon" and his eyes are described to be "pale, watery blue, like a frosted-over puddle" when he and Wren first met. His scales feel more like a lizard's, being "smooth and cool and a little pebbly, especially the softer scales under its chin and wings." He does not have smoke rising from his nostrils or the capability to sneeze or breathe fire, leading Wren to later conclude that he is fireless.

When Wren first found him, he was not much bigger than a rabbit. However, he is noted to be 'getting markedly bigger every time he went to sleep'. By chapter four of Dragonslayer, he was up to Wren's waist, and his wingspan was wider than her arms spread.

In The Dragonet Prophecy (Graphic Novel), he is shown to have salmon colored wings.

Personality

Sky is shown to be unusually silly, kind and gentle in nature, as well as very giggly and excitable. Despite his normally soft nature, he was shown to be capable of becoming angry, such as how he got mad at the humans who wronged Wren. He is very fond of animals, especially small creatures with shells (such as snails,) shown by him protecting them or getting excited every time he sees one. He is a vegetarian, likely because of his love for creatures.

Biography

Pre-Series

Kestrel fled with her twin dragonets but was intercepted by Queen Scarlet at the Diamond Spray River. Scarlet offered Kestrel forgiveness for her disobedience if she killed one of the twins. Kestrel was believed to have killed the dragonet with too little fire, who was Peril's brother, but soon after, Wren met Sky, befriending him.

Sky was first shown to be found by Wren, and rescued by her from a tangle of "spiky plants".

Afterwards, Sky and Wren spot Kestrel looking for Sky. Since Sky panics at the sight of the older dragon, Wren concludes that she's a threat to both of them so they hide from her. After Kestrel leaves, Wren and Sky flee towards the Claws of the Clouds Mountains where they live in hiding.

A year later, Wren and Sky stumble on top of a mountain where they spot the dragonets of destiny in a cave below the hole and Sky laments on his inability to breath fire before being interrupted by Kestrel and Webs. Sky freaks out at the sight of Kestrel presumably because Sky believes that Kestrel resented him for his lack of fire and immediately departs with Wren. Sometime later, Sky travels to a dragon city with Wren, presumably Possibility, where he is captured by General Sandstorm and is taken to Burn's Stronghold to be presented as a gift to Princess Burn. Wren comes with the help of Deathbringer, called "Murderbasket" by Wren, and frees Sky by using a key obtained by Rose to unlock Sky’s chains.

Soon after, while Wren was riding Sky, another dragon came, called Cereus (more commonly known as "Sweetface"), and on her back was Leaf. Leaf and Wren were reunited happily, but Leaf wanted to go back to Burn's Stronghold. Wren had trouble talking to "Sweetface", as she cooed and talked on and on about how adorable Wren was and how she wanted to "snuggle her and put little hats on her", so Sky had to talk to Sweetface about riding Leaf back, and continued to tease Wren about how she would look better in a little hat.

More flying in soon...

Seven years after being separated from her family, Peril was told the truth about Kestrel being her mother as well as the supposed murder of her twin while Kestrel was on trial. Peril said she never wanted to know Kestrel due to her brother's supposed death at her claws, claiming, "I may not want you dead, but I don't want to know you."

When Clay asked Peril to save Sunny for them, Peril was angry and jealous, causing her to ask why Sunny was so important. Tsunami told her that Sunny was like a sister to them all, and asked if Peril would try to save her brother if he was here and alive. Peril thought for a moment and agreed that she would try to help. This shows that Peril and her brother might be friends if he meets her, or that Peril feels a connection to the brother she knew for so little.

Trivia

  • Tui confirmed at the 2020 Barnes and Noble FanWing Fan Fest that Sky is Peril's brother.
  • He is said to be obsessed with snails, among turtles and other animals.
  • He is vegetarian, being the first confirmed SkyWing to be known to not eat meat.
  • He is the first known dragon able to speak Human, although limited.
  • In Tui's annotation of The Dragonet Prophecy, she mentioned that in her first draft, Peril and Sky were in the prophecy, as well as an IceWing, but decided that eight dragonets were too much.
  • Tui said that SkyWings with too little fire would have sickly pale red or orange scales and would get sick more easily than normal SkyWings.
  • Queen Scarlet led Peril to believe that she burnt Sky while they were in their egg together as a result of her taking his fire.
  • Sky's unique case confirms that dragons can have eggs with two yolks (assuming they're the same as real eggs), as some birds that lay eggs with two yolks can hatch two offspring from that egg (like Peril and Sky).
  • The name Ember is also used as a nickname given to Smolder by Rose before she found out his real name by Wren.
