Orchid is a female RainWing who was introduced in The Dark Secret. She and her partner, Mangrove, work as fruit gatherers for both tribes in the Rainforest Kingdom, where she currently resides. She was one of the seventeen captive RainWings who were being held prisoner on the NightWing island before being freed.
Description
During her imprisonment on the Nightwing Island she was shown to have gray scales matching the conditions around her.[1]
Personality
Orchid seems to be kind and very loving to her partner. It can be assumed that Orchid struggles with doubt and even anxiety, as she feared that Mangrove would not remember her after she was abducted by the NightWings.[2] However, when the RainWings launched their invasion, Orchid turned bright pink upon seeing Mangrove again, a sign of happiness and love.
Biography
The Dragonet Prophecy
Before Glory and the dragonets had arrived, Orchid and Mangrove were gathering fruit from deep inside the rainforest when Orchid was suddenly kidnapped by the NightWings. Mangrove continually tried to convince Queen Magnificent to send out a search party, but the queen suggested that some other dragon could investigate. When Glory asked around if anyone knew what had happened, one dragon said: "Maybe she's taking a really long nap somewhere." Glory volunteered to search for Orchid, agreeing to look for the other lost members of the tribe as well. After Glory let herself be abducted, she found some of the missing RainWings being experimented on in the Night Kingdom, and deduced that Orchid and the others where all there as well.
Orchid was chained to the wall, unconscious, when Mastermind showed Starflight and Fatespeaker around his laboratory. Mastermind then explained that he was trying to see how long the average RainWing could use their venom before running out, but Orchid had fainted before he could get any "useful information". Starflight and Fatespeaker fetched her some water, shocked by the NightWings treatment of her. Once she regained consciousness, Starflight asked what her name was. Surprised, she replied that no NightWing had ever asked her that before, and then answered "Orchid." He told her that Mangrove was looking for her and to not lose hope. Her scales turned rosy pink with happiness at hearing his words, making Mastermind curious, as he had never seen a RainWing display happiness on the NightWing island. Later, during the attack on the island, Orchid was freed along with the rest of the imprisoned RainWings. She was happily reunited with Mangrove, and they both returned to the Rainforest Kingdom.
The Jade Mountain Prophecy
When members of the Jade Winglet visited the Rainforest Kingdom, Kinkajou mistook Bromeliad for Orchid, much to her dismay.
Relationships
Orchid respects Queen Glory as she helped with freeing her and reuniting her with her partner Mangrove.
Mangrove worried about Orchid so much when she went missing that he neglected his sun time. Mangrove is Orchid's partner and the two are very close. She was very happy when they reunited, though she also expressed worry that he might not care about her disappearance, choosing to move on with a new partner, or not do anything about it, though Mangrove told her he would never move on. They both returned to the rainforest together.
Orchid was initially shocked when Starflight had asked for her name.[3] Though their conversation was brief, the RainWing seemed to be happy when Starflight encouraged her to have faith in Mangrove.[4]
