Template:InfoboxMastermind is a NightWing scientist and, revealed by Morrowseer, to be the father of Starflight. He conducted many experiments on RainWing venom with the ultimate goal of creating full body armor capable of resisting its effects.

History

Mastermind first appears in The Dark Secret. When Morrowseer and Starflight are on a hunt, Starflight remarks that he would not have developed the correct antibodies to protect against the dangers of eating decayed NightWing food. Morrowseer then declares he now knows who the dragonet's father is, based on the 'style' Starflight spoke. Morrowseer takes him, along with Fatespeaker, to visit Mastermind. He is in the middle of a crisis when they arrive, and tells them to go away because Princess Greatness threatened to shut his research down. Morrowseer informs Mastermind that Starflight is his son, at which point the other dragon calms down and first examines Starflight, and is overjoyed that he has found his son. He then begins talking about how certain traits they share were genetically dominant. He then shows the two dragonets some of the experiments he is working on, including desalinization and volcanology. Starflight is awed by it all, and is eager to work with his father. Mastermind then shows them his current project. Mastermind also works on the study of RainWing venom. In order to study the venom, 17 RainWings were brought from their homes to the Night Kingdom against their will (3 of which did not survive), and were then chained up so that Mastermind could safely conduct his expiriments on them. He wanted to learn more about RainWing venom such as what it effects and what it dosn't. He learned that it can kill dragons (and all other organic material), but it must get into either the eyes or the bloodstream to do so. He then began the construction of armor to resist the venom, but could not finish it due to being unable to find a suitable material as the eyepiece (the NightWings needed it as they they had secret plans to later leave the night kingdom and take over the Rainforest Kingdom as their new home.) However, he was so caught up in his research it never occured to him that he was torchuring the captive RainWings. This causes Starflight to decide that his father is slightly crazy. He wanted nothing to do with Mastermind's venom expiriments and tries to avoid him.  Mastermind also secretly was working on lava-heated armor that would enable Queen Battlewinner to leave her pool of fire without freezing to death. To stay alive, Battlewinner had to remain heated at extreme temperatures at all times because of an incident with an IceWing and its freezing ice breath. This way, she would be able to come to the rainforest. However, the armor never achieves completion due to Battlewinner dying before Mastermind can finish it.

Before the volcano explodes rendering the night kingdom uninhabitable, Mastermind is among the evacuating dragons. He was bringing with him a bundle of scrolls, much as his son had tried to do in the underground cave. He voices his worries about the RainWings hating him for what he has done to their tribe toStarflight and Tsunami. Starflight senses his father wants an assuring lie, and he does not give it to him, telling him to apologize to the queen and take whatever punishment she gives him, and Mastermind escapes through the rainforest portal with the rest of the NightWings. His lab and research all perished in the eruption, save what was in the scrolls he brought with him.

Appearance

Mastermind supposedly resembles Starflight at least somewhat. He does talk about how they share similar phisical traits. Because the NightWings have a constant food shortage, he is slender from lack of food. His eyes are also bloodshot from long hours of working in his lab without rest. He sometimes wears an odd metal helmet to protect against the effects of RainWing venom, usually during his expiriments.

Personality

Mastermind is highly intelligent, as he is a NightWing scientist. He seems to care greatly about Starflight, and has a tendency to use long words. Just like Starflight, he gets nervous in tough situations, such as when Queen Battlewinner gets out of the pool of lava before her armor is complete, causing her demise.
