"No. No to Queen Beryl, no to these orders. I won't hurt the dragons who should be ruling the Court of Refuge, and who have been nothing but kind to me. I'm going to set Mulberry free. And then we're going to find a way to leave this prison, all of us together."
— Umber about Queen Beryl and the Court of Refuge, The Hybrid Prince

Umber is an adult male MudWing and the main protagonist of The Hybrid Prince. Formerly a student at Jade Mountain Academy as a member of the Jade Winglet, he became a fugitive alongside Sora after she was revealed to be getting her revenge on Icicle for Crane's death. The two later settled on Dungeon Isle before its leaders were overthrown. He is currently raising Harmony alongside Mulberry, Quokka, and Wollemi. He has romantic feelings for Mulberry.

Description

Umber has brown scales[1] and pale amber eyes. He is the smallest of his sibling group, with a scar across the top of his snout.[2]

Personality

Umber is a caring, observant, loyal, and mentally resilient dragon, and is very kind towards his loved ones.[3][4][5] He experiences a warm, constant sense of relief related to the end of the war.[1] He is incredibly loyal to and fond of his siblings, and thinks very highly of them;[4] he wants to protect them and keep them safe, regardless of the cost.[6] He was sympathetic towards Moonwatcher when she was interrogated about the truth of her NightWing abilities.[7] Out of his siblings, Umber believes himself to have "the most energy", but also often wishes he had someone else to tell him what to do.[8]

Biography

Pre-Series
Umber's egg was laid by Cattail as a part of a clutch including Clay's, whose egg was later sold to the Talons of Peace for two cows. Reed, Sora, Pheasant, Crane, and Marsh are his other siblings. Umber's egg was the last one to hatch, and he was presumably helped out of his egg by Reed, his "Bigwings," while in reality, their lost sibling, Clay, was their actual eldest brother. As a result of Queen Moorhen's alliance with Burn, Umber and his siblings were forced to fight in the War of SandWing Succession, resulting in the death of his sister Crane at the claws of Icicle in battle roughly six years after being hatched.

The Dragonet Prophecy

The Dragonet Prophecy
Two days after the death of his sister Crane, Umber and his living siblings encountered their eldest brother, Clay, for the first time as Clay returned to the Mud Kingdom in an attempt to find his family. Umber was the first one to notice Clay near the mud pools and to have a feeling that he was part of their family, notifying his siblings. The others soon found Clay as he finished talking, dejected, with Cattail, and were overjoyed to meet him. Umber told his siblings that Clay had looked familiar. They helped Clay make peace with himself and, despite protests, let Clay go with the other dragonets of destiny.
The Hidden Kingdom
Umber was mentioned by Glory when she thought about where the dragonets would go after the prophecy.
The Dark Secret
In the prologue, Umber and his siblings were fighting off attacking IceWings. Clay's siblings all appeared to hate the war and debated joining the Talons of Peace, though they decided against it in the end. Umber disliked the war the most and was the timidest of them all.
The Brightest Night
He and his siblings were seen when Sunny and Clay went to the MudWings to send a message to Burn. Umber hugged Clay when the group realized his presence. He was reluctant to go along with the MudWings' planned attack on the IceWings. In the epilogue, Clay said that he would love to have Umber and his siblings as students at the Jade Mountain school, also adding that Umber's history and reading were not so good.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Moon Rising
Umber, along with his siblings Sora and Marsh, was one of the first students to attend the new and prestigious Jade Mountain Academy. He was assigned to the Jade Winglet. When he met the other members of the Jade Winglet, Moon overheard that he thought Qibli is "gorgeous," and also that he and Kinkajou secretly wished that Qibli and Winter, respectively, were their destinies. He stated that Carnelian seemed familiar, and that they may have fought together during the war. After learning that his sister Sora had attempted to kill Icicle using dragonflame cacti, which resulted in the deaths of Carnelian and Bigtail, and that she also rigged a stalactite to fall on Icicle, Umber decided to leave the Academy alongside his sister in order to keep her and others safe from her. Before he and Sora departed, he and Qibli embraced.
Escaping Peril
Turtle stated that it felt weird in his sleeping cave with Umber gone.
Talons of Power

Umber was mentioned by Turtle, when he thought about Umber and how he missed his clawmate. He said that Umber reminded him of his brothers.

Turtle thought that if he survived, he would enchant something to find Umber and make sure he was safe.
Darkness of Dragons
Umber was mentioned in Moonwatcher's thoughts about how she misses the members of the Jade Winglet that were no longer there.

The Forgotten Isles Prophecy

The Hybrid Prince

Immediately after leaving Jade Mountain Academy, Umber followed Sora as she flew toward the Mud Kingdom to try to see Reed and Pheasant again. Umber was struggling with the fact that his sister was a murderer and what he was supposed to do. Umber told Sora that they could not go to the Mud Kingdom because she could be turned in. Instead, they flew south to find an island off the coast of the Rainforest Kingdom. While searching through the islands, Umber found strange markings warning about the islands being dangerous and to keep moving. Umber also noticed that Sora was behaving strangely, talking to monkeys on one of the islands and leaving him behind.

After flying for so long, Umber needed to rest, and he and Sora landed on one of the islands to sleep. Umber was woken up as he was dragged into the ocean by a tentacle, and was saved by a hybrid dragon named Mulberry. Mulberry took Umber and Sora inside the Court of Refuge and introduced them to Beryl. Beryl then introduced the MudWings to Snakeroot and witnessed Platypus vandalizing the outside of the throne room. Quokka then took the MudWings to the Gathering and put sleep powder in their food before being questioned and attacked by Taipan, Royal, and Dugong. Mulberry then led Umber and Sora to a room to sleep after feeling tired from the sleeping powder.

The next day, Beryl put Umber in charge of the King's Teeth after being impressed with how he handled the attack from Taipan. Later, Umber saw Mulberry flying away from the Court of Refuge and was blocked by a magical barrier surrounding the Dungeon Isle then was knocked out. Mulberry and Quokka took care of him and healed him until he woke up.

Relationships

Umber loves Clay; despite not being able to grow up with him, he loves him just as strongly as he loves his other siblings. He felt a "familiar feeling" towards Clay even before he knew who he was.[9]

Umber has romantic feelings for Mulberry.[citation needed]

Umber was attracted to Qibli; he thought of Qibli as gorgeous[10] and wished he were his destiny.[11] He is worried about sounding like an idiot in front of him.[12] When he fled Jade Mountain Academy with Sora, parting with Qibli made him feel longing, heartbreak, and loyalty so strongly that Moonwatcher could feel it as a physical pain in her chest.[13] Umber thought sadly about Qibli and the future he wanted with him, and that he was never going to see him again. However, he pushed that thought away and told himself that his feelings for Qibli were just a crush.[14]

Umber deeply cares for Sora and has a close bond with her; although he felt confused and betrayed when he found out Sora set the dragonflame cactus bomb, which resulted in the death of one of his winglet members Carnelian, he told her he loved her anyway. Umber escaped from Jade Mountain with Sora and promised himself to keep her safe and to keep everyone else safe from her.[6]

Umber and Turtle were clawmates and close friends in Jade Mountain; they pulled their sleeping mats close so they could sleep with their backs against each other, as they often slept this way with their siblings.[15] Turtle missed having him as a clawmate after Umber fled the school with his sister.

Quotes

"I hate this war. I don't understand what we're even fighting for. Who cares who the SandWing queen is? I've never met Burn and I don't want to. Why am I fighting an IceWing over a throne that has nothing to do with either of us?"
― to his siblings about the war (The Dark Secret, prologue)

"Can't you smell it? We flew over part of it, too — it's pretty well hidden in the forest."
― to his siblings about a scavenger den (The Dark Secret, prologue)

"I hope we don't have to. I hope Clay fulfills the prophecy and ends the war quick and saves the world really soon, before we have to do any more fighting. Don't you think? Maybe he will?"
― to his siblings about killing other dragons (The Dark Secret, prologue)

"When do we eat? Just kidding. Pretending to be Clay."
― to the rest of the Jade Winglet and Tsunami (Moon Rising, page 84)

"This is my brother and sister. Marsh is really fast... you should see him fly. And Sora knows everything; she's the only one who ever practiced reading."
― to Kinkajou and Moonwatcher (Moon Rising, page 107)

"Sora, it's okay. I love you anyway."
― to Sora after she attempted to kill Icicle (Moon Rising, page 212)

"Sora, how can you be so sure? It was a terrible battle. There were a hundred IceWings there, and we were all fighting for our lives. Your memory could be playing tricks on you."
― to Sora, doubting her assertion that Icicle was indeed Crane's killer (Moon Rising, page 264)

"She could be finding the enemy of her nightmares in the first IceWing face she saw here. Or else, if she's right, we have the worst luck in the world. Ending up in the same cave as Crane's murderer? I would have lost my mind, too."
― thoughts (Moon Rising, page 264)

"No. No to Queen Beryl, no to these orders. I won't hurt the dragons who should be ruling the Court of Refuge, and who have been nothing but kind to me. I'm going to set Mulberry free. And then we're going to find a way to leave this prison, all of us together."
― thoughts about Beryl's orders (The Hybrid Prince, page 244)

"She'll be alright. [...] She's still Sora; she's always been Sora, inside. My sister, who is more than the bad things she's done. My sister, who I trust."
― thoughts about Sora (The Hybrid Prince, page 286)
