Snowfall
- "Oh, how funny, I wouldn't have thought you'd want him to. Have you forgotten that the Diamond Trial must also be undertaken by a defending challenger? That's whoever is currently in first place, of course. But only one dragon can survive the Trial. Dear me, that means it'll be brother against brother, won't it? Tsk, tsk. What a conundrum for poor Hailstorm."
- — Snowfall to Winter about Hailstorm, Winter Turning
Snowfall is a female IceWing dragonet and the main protagonist of The Dangerous Gift. She is the daughter of Queen Glacier and the sister of Minke and Crystal.
She is the ruling queen of the IceWing tribe and currently resides in the IceWing palace.
Appearance
Snowfall is large,[2] with snow-white scales[3] and dark blue eyes.[4] She owns a heavy metal crown studded with diamonds and metallic spikes that look similar to icicles.[5]
On the cover of The Dangerous Gift, Snowfall appears to have a pointed crown, earring(s), an armband, and a ring, all made of what seemed to be blue jewel. She has long, curved horns, a narrow snout, and longer wing tip spikes than an average IceWing's.
Personality
According to Winter, Snowfall is abundantly blessed with mean smugness.[6] When Winter was raised to first place in the Circle rankings, Snowfall was fuming and gave him a glare that should have melted all of the ice in the palace courtyard.[7] She also smirked at him as if she did not expect his new ranking to last even a week.[8] She was described to smile outwardly, but her voice was all murderous stalactites,[9] sugary-sweet and mocking.[10]
Despite her outward exterior, Snowfall struggles with a lot of isolationist worries and fears. She is scared, but in a powerful, reactive way, so whenever she is upset, she acts out very dramatically. She has gone through enormous trauma due to the IceWing plague and is heavily driven by anxiety and fear. She is terrified of any threat to her kingdom.[11]
In Darkness of Dragons, she was furious when her mother, Glacier, died, and swore vengeance on the NightWings. This could mean that Snowfall had a good, even loving relationship with Glacier, or that she was just enraged that the NightWings had unexpectedly dealt a such heavy blow to her tribe.
As a result of the plague Darkstalker sent, she is described by Jerboa II to be paranoid and perpetually anxious, and thus hard to deal with. Due to becoming queen at such a young age, it appears that Snowfall seems to be stressed.
When one of her scouts saw the LeafWings and the other dragons coming from Pantala, she was furious that the Great Ice Cliff didn't go around the entire Ice Kingdom. She asked Jerboa II to extend the wall with her magic, but Jerboa said that animus magic wasn't working. Because of this, Snowfall is likely worried her tribe is going to be ambushed by the dragons coming from Pantala.
In The Dangerous Gift, it's confirmed that despite being apparently indifferent to Glacier's death, Snowfall did care deeply for her mother but prefers to hide it behind her intimidating exterior as shown when she pretends not to be affected by Glacier's death when Lynx brings it up. However, this is immediately shown in Snowfall's thoughts to be a ruse as she mentally notes how much she loved her mother and never intended to challenge her anytime soon, due to her affliction towards Glacier.
Biography
The Jade Mountain Prophecy
| Winter Turning |
|---|
| When Winter scans the rankings of the IceWings in the First Circle, he notices that Snowfall has moved to the top position on the dragonet side in front of Lynx, who was in second place. When Winter is moved to take her spot, she shoots him a nasty glare that says that she hates someone else being in first place. When the IceWing dragonets are dismissed, Snowfall stays to congratulate him sarcastically and to stare at the rankings, along with Hailstorm, "as if she could reshape them with the sheer force of her eyeballs," clearly meaning that she was upset about the new rankings. |

When Darkstalker enchanted a scroll to tell the news of the IceWings, it was revealed that Queen Glacier is dead, Snowfall had become the new queen, and that she had brought the entire IceWing army to Jade Mountain to fight the newly super-powered NightWings. Snowfall, Hailstorm, and Narwhal are shown demanding the Jade Mountain staff to tell them where Darkstalker is, which they didn't know. Winter shows up, and she is shocked, looking at Hailstorm as if expecting him to disappear, then demanding to know how Winter is alive. Winter exclaims that it's not important and begins helping his friends attempt to convince her not to fight the NightWings. Before she can consider, NightWing scouts with gifts of speed appear and begin attacking, throwing the discussion away and officially beginning the battle. Narwhal is killed while blocking the NightWings from her, but Snowfall keeps relatively calm throughout the battle and launches frostbreath attacks of her own. She was later teleported back to the Ice Kingdom along with the other IceWings, due to Anemone's spell. In the epilogue, it is mentioned that Snowfall wanted to close the borders and isolate the Ice Kingdom but reconsiders this after she receives large amounts of letters from her tribe requesting to attend Jade Mountain Academy. This change in heart is not very willing though, as evidenced in book 14. |
The Lost Continent Prophecy
| The Poison Jungle |
|---|
| In the epilogue, Snowfall and Jerboa II have a meeting outside of Great Ice Cliff. Queen Snowfall's scouts have spotted hundreds of dragons on their way to Pyrrhia. These are likely the LeafWings, some SilkWings, the two HiveWings, Cricket and Bumblebee, Turtle and Tsunami. She demands that Jerboa II extends the Great Ice Cliff to prevent the "invaders" from taking her kingdom, as she became very paranoid after the plague that killed Queen Glacier and at least twenty-three of her tribemates. Jerboa II tells her that animus magic isn't currently working for anyone on the continent. Snowfall becomes enraged and storms off saying Jerboa II was useless concluding the epilogue. |
| The Dangerous Gift |

After the plague that Darkstalker sent to the IceWings, she was furious about the event and never wanted to see any other dragon tribes again. She mostly didn't care what other queens had to say and would have isolated the tribe, but the empathy spell convinced too many of her subjects to try to reach out to other tribes. Later, Snowfall was seen talking to Lynx over her problems, albeit the queen was stressed and angry. More information flying in soon... |
Relationships
She doesn't seem to like her cousin or care about the fact that he was fighting his brother during the Diamond Trial. She was also very angry when he was placed ahead of her in the rankings. In The Dangerous Gift, it's revealed that Snowfall has become distrustful of Winter.
Tui has confirmed that in The Dangerous Gift, Lynx will help Snowfall with her anger issues. This is demonstrated in the 2nd excerpt of the book where Lynx arrives in Snowfall's throne Room to check up on the former. Due to Snowfall's paranoia, the IceWing Queen questions Lynx's motives as Queen Snowfall feels threatened by the latter's presence. When asked if she (Lynx) was spying on her, Lynx confirms this but attempts to reassure her that it's not for the reasons her majesty feared. Lynx explains that she was concerned for her Queen's mental health due to the ordeals their tribe (particularly Snowfall) had been forced to endure by Darkstalker. Snowfall notes that she has a hard time not strangling Lynx sometimes.
In the books, she is never shown to have any affection towards her mother, but as shown in the epilogue of The Poison Jungle, whenever Jerboa II mentioned her late mother's name, her wings gave a little tremor. Snowfall's relationship with her mother is explored in The Dangerous Gift where it's revealed that Snowfall cared more about Glacier then she'd let on. Snowfall mentally noted that she intended to spend several more years with her mother before challenging her for the throne. Snowfall was devastated when her mother died from the plague.
She saw Jerboa II as a way of making her tribe safer from the other dragon tribes with animus magic. This is likely due to her fear of what Darkstalker did to her mother and other IceWings in the past. However, it is likely that Snowfall only tolerated Jerboa II because of the animus magic, because when the SandWing proved that she could no longer enchant things Snowfall called her 'useless' and stormed away.
Little is currently known about Snowfall's relationship with her older sister; however, Snowfall became distrustful towards Crystal in the aftermath of the IceWing plague. Snowfall even fears that she is conspiring with their cousin, Winter, in order to overthrow her.
