- "Find the dragon. […] Bring it here. […] Or everyone you know will die."
- — Vole to Raven, The Dangerous Gift
Vole is a male human who was introduced in The Dangerous Gift. He is the older brother of Mole and currently resides by the abyss within Pantala.
Description
Vole has a skeletal figure. His eyes have a green shimmer and haunted feel to them. He speaks with a shivery, raspy voice.[1]
Personality
Before he was taken off into the abyss, he was described as being funny and charming.[2] Not much is known about his personality in the present, but he appears to have no qualms against murder, as he is mentioned to have tossed people into the abyss. Due to this, none of the other humans in the village were allowed to visit him, except for Mole, who kept him alive. Nobody is allowed to speak of him. Vole is mentioned to have been watching the abyss for years, never letting his eyes wander from the pit, and is one of the few people who acknowledges that something needs to be done about it when it starts behaving strangely.
Biography
The Lost Continent Prophecy
In the epilogue, when Raven brought food for Vole, he asked her if she could hear the whispers and said that it was growing. Vole then tasked Raven with the responsibility of bringing a dragon to the abyss, though he remained vague despite her asking for details. He told her to bring the dragon to the pit to save the village, or else everyone she knew would die.
In the prologue, it was mentioned that Vole's green eyes were the result of the abyss choosing to infect him as part of a human ceremony.
Later in the novel, Vole had kidnapped Dusky and took him down into the abyss. Luna soon followed Vole and Dusky, and saw Vole taking the dragonet through a hole in the vines to the throne room. Vole stayed in the abyss for most of the book, and Luna took him and Dusky back to the surface after the othermind was destroyed. Vole started to remember who he was, and the guardian ceremony, but not much after that. Raven and Mole thought he would be alright after a lot of food and rest. Mole took Vole back to the village while Raven guided Wren and the dragons out of the cave.
