Umber is an adult male MudWing who was introduced in The Dragonet Prophecy. Formerly a student at Jade Mountain Academy as a member of the Jade Winglet, he is currently on the run with Sora.

Appearance

Umber has brown scales and pale amber eyes. He is the smallest of his sibling group.

Personality

Umber is a caring and loyal dragon, very kind to those he loves, and is also extremely observant. Examples of his quick observations include noticing the scent of scavenger dens, even in the middle of a desperate and frantic escape, remembering Carnelian from a past battle, and being the first to recognize Clay despite never having seen him prior to their encounter. Umber runs away with Sora after her attempts to kill Icicle, showing his loyalty to his siblings. He had, understandably, an ongoing relief since the end of the war, according to Moon. He thinks very highly of his siblings, saying that Sora was the smartest dragon he knew, and that Marsh was the quickest. He is similar to Clay in the fact that he is one of the links that keeps his family together. Despite the fact that Sora killed two dragons and injured one, he comforted her, saying that he loved her anyway. He doesn't seem to hold grudges, as he stayed serene when Carnelian was rude and didn't hate Icicle as Sora did.

Biography

Pre-Series

Umber's egg was laid by Cattail as a part of a clutch including Clay's, whose egg was later sold to the Talons of Peace for two cows. Reed, Sora, Pheasant, Crane, and Marsh are his other siblings. Umber's egg was the last one to hatch, and he was presumably helped out of his egg by Reed, his "bigwings," while in reality, their lost sibling, Clay, was their actual eldest brother. As a result of Queen Moorhen's alliance with Burn, Umber and his siblings were forced to fight in the War of SandWing Succession, resulting in the death of his sister Crane at the claws of Icicle in battle roughly six years after being hatched.

The Dragonet Prophecy

Clay meeting his siblings Two days after the death of his sister Crane, Umber and his living siblings encountered their eldest brother, Clay, for the first time as Clay returned to the Mud Kingdom in an attempt to find his family. Umber was the first one to notice Clay near the mud pools and to have a feeling that he was part of their family, notifying his siblings. The others soon found Clay as he finished talking, dejected, with Cattail, and were overjoyed to meet him. Umber told his siblings that Clay had looked familiar. They helped Clay make peace with himself and, despite protests, let Clay go with the other dragonets of destiny.

The Hidden Kingdom
Umber was mentioned by Glory when she thinks about where the dragonets would go after the prophecy.

The Dark Secret
In the prologue, Umber and his siblings were fighting off attacking IceWings. Clay's siblings all appeared to hate the war and debated joining the Talons of Peace, though they decided against it in the end. Umber disliked the war the most and was the timidest of them all.

The Brightest Night

He and his siblings were seen when Sunny and Clay went to the MudWings to send a message to Burn. Umber hugged Clay when the group realized his presence. He was reluctant to go along with the MudWings' planned attack on the IceWings. In the epilogue, Clay said that he would love to have Umber and his siblings as students at the Jade Mountain school, also adding that Umber's history and reading weren't so good.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Moon Rising

Umber, along with his siblings Sora and Marsh, was one of the first students to attend the new and prestigious Jade Mountain Academy, and he was placed in the Jade Winglet. When he met the other members of the Jade Winglet, Moon overheard that he thinks Qibli is "gorgeous," and also that he and Kinkajou secretly wish that Qibli and Winter, respectively, were their destinies. He stated that Carnelian seems familiar, and that they may have fought together. After learning that his sister Sora had attempted to kill Icicle using dragonflame cacti, resulting in the deaths of Carnelian and Bigtail, and that she also rigged a stalactite to fall on Icicle, Umber decided to leave the Academy alongside his sister in order to keep her and others safe. Before he and Sora departed, he and Qibli embraced.

Talons of Power
Umber did not appear in this book but was mentioned. Prince Turtle was shown to miss Umber. He said that Umber reminds him of his brothers. Turtle thought that if he survived, he would enchant something to find Umber and make sure he was safe.

Darkness of Dragons
Umber was mentioned in Moonwatcher's thoughts about how she misses the members of the Jade Winglet that were no longer there.

Relationships

Clay

Umber loves Clay; despite not being able to grow up with him, he loves him just as brightly as he loves his other siblings. He felt a "familiar feeling" towards Clay even before he knew who he was.

Sora

Umber deeply cares for Sora and has a close bond with her; although he felt confused and betrayed when he found out Sora set the dragonflame bomb, he told her he loved her anyway. Umber escaped from Jade Mountain with Sora and promised himself to keep her safe and to keep everyone else safe from her.

Turtle 

Umber and Turtle were clawmates and close friends in Jade Mountain; they pulled their sleeping mats close so they could sleep with their backs against each other, as they often slept this way with their siblings. In Talons of Power, he is mentioned by Turtle that he was like a brother to him.

Qibli

Umber seems to be attracted to Qibli, based on his thoughts when first meeting Qibli in Moon Rising; he thought Qibli was "gorgeous" and wished he were his destiny. He appears to be worried about sounding like an idiot in front of him. Qibli "especially" worried about telling Umber about Moon's powers compared to Sora and Marsh, and described him as "kind and good," as well as the only one who could stop and help Sora if she was dangerously unstable. Even though Qibli does not hold the same affection for Umber like Umber does for him, he still cares about him and was saddened when Umber left.

Trivia

• Umber, along with Sora, will eventually make another appearance in the series, (most likely the third arc) and Umber could possibly be a protagonist in a later book. Tui has also said that she would like for him to find his soulmate. This information was on the old Wings of Fire Scholastic Message Boards and can no longer be accessed, as the page was taken down.
