k9lkkThe dragon tribes of Pyrrhia have been warring for years. The queen of the Sandwings tribe, Queen Oasis was killed by a scavenger, and her three daughters Blister, Burn, and Blaze have allied themselves with the various tribes of dragons (except for the Rainwings and mysterious Nightwings). A prophecy made by a Nightwing called Morrowseer speaks of five dragonets destined to end the war and choose one of the sisters as the the next queen.
Clay, a Mudwing, has been raised for five years under a mountain, and never has seen the light of day. His companions, Tsunami the Seawing, Starflight the Nightwing, Sunny the Sandwing, and Glory the Rainwing, as well as him, were all taken as eggs by the Talons of Peace and are supposed to be the dragonets of prophecy. After Morrowseer arrives and finds out that Glory is a substitute, he says she cannot stay. One of the their guardians stole her egg

to replace a Skywings egg that was supposed to be the fifth dragonet of the prophecy and that Burn smashed. The dragonets are forced to escape to protect Glory from being "disposed of" (i.e. killed) and are almost immediatly thrown into a whole other mess of trouble when they are captured by Scarlet, queen of the Skywings.
Scarlet is fond of taking her enemies and pitting them in gladitorial style fights to the death. She invites her ally Burn of the Sandwings to come and visit to the see the dragonets of prophecy battle her Champion, a Skywings called Peril. Peril has never been beaten. She was a twin egg, rare among Skywings, and took all of her brother's fire, so she has twice the amount she should have. She radiates heat and burns all she touches, including other dragons, which makes her invulnerable.
Clay has to figure out some way to get himself and his friends out alive, but first he has to survive the arena. He can only hope his friends can too. And if he does survive the arena, he will be pitted against his new best friend, Peril.
