"For thousands of years, The Great Ice Cliff's kept all the other tribes out of the Ice Kingdom. We always thought it kept us safe. I thought it was so important, I wanted it to extend all around us, so my tribe could huddle safely in our igloos and ice palaces and no one would ever be able to get through our walls of ice. But if we'd all stayed in the Ice Kingdom, Darkstalker's plague would have killed us. We needed dragons from other tribes, working together, to recognize his magic and find a way to save us. We needed hybrids like Typhoon, who could cross the wall and were spared the plague, to bring us those earrings. We only survived because of our connections to the other kingdoms. And if the breath of evil comes here... if it lands in the Ice Kingdom first... we may need those connections again."
— Snowfall's thoughts before she destroys the Great Ice Cliff, The Dangerous Gift

Snowfall is an adult female IceWing and the main protagonist of The Dangerous Gift. She is the daughter of Queen Glacier and the sister of Mink and Crystal.

She is the queen of the IceWing tribe and currently resides in the IceWing palace.

Appearance

Snowfall is large,[1] with snow-white scales[2] and dark blue eyes.[3] She owned a heavy metal crown studded with diamonds and metallic spikes that look similar to icicles, but ordered it to be destroyed due to the enchantment on it from Queen Diamond. Her crown was described as being too big for her head.[4] She is also shown wearing the tiara of strength, the ring of vision, and the gift of stealth.[5]

Personality

According to Winter, Snowfall is "abundantly blessed with mean smugness."[6] When Winter was raised to first place in the Circle rankings, Snowfall was fuming mad and gave him a glare that "should have melted all of the ice in the palace courtyard."[7] She also smirked at him after that as if she did not expect his new ranking to last even a week.[8] She was described to smile outwardly, but her voice was all murderous stalactites,[9] sugary-sweet and mocking.[10]

Despite her rough exterior, Snowfall struggles with a lot of isolationist worries and fears. She is scared, but in a powerful, reactive way; she acts out very dramatically whenever she is upset. She has gone through enormous trauma due to the IceWing plague and her mother's death, and is heavily driven by anxiety and fear. As the new queen, Snowfall is terrified of any threat to her kingdom.[11]

Snowfall does not seem to take IceWing traditions into heavy regard, as shown when she has many rebellious feelings about them and moved dragons' Circle Rankings the way she wanted instead of the way tradition shaped it. This is shown when she moved her uncle Permafrost's name down simply because he annoyed her. However, she loves her little sister Mink. However, as Glacier puts it, Snowfall has an indomitable will and ferocity that will lead her to "fight for this kingdom like nobody else will," though she notes that she would have some growing up to do first. She seems to have developed and grown throughout the events of The Dangerous Gift, as seen by her learning from the visions from Opal's gift of vision.

Jerboa suspects that there may be a heart under Snowfall's icy exterior, but there are not many signs of it. Snowfall felt guilty when she yelled at her scout, which implies that she sometimes does sympathize with other dragons beneath her spiky cover. She was also perpetually anxious and incredibly paranoid, and when Jerboa tried explaining to her that her animus powers were not to be abused, Snowfall threw a tantrum and became frantic.[2]

After the events of The Dangerous Gift, Snowfall became a much more empathetic dragon who believed in the good of dragon hearts. She destroyed the Great Ice Cliff after realizing that her tribe was only able to survive because of their connections to other dragons, and the Circle Rankings, believing that dragons should not be judged for such reasons. Many of Opal's visions helped Snowfall become a more confident, considerate queen, and to open up her tribe to the rest of the world more.

Before destroying the Great Ice Cliff, she thinks "I want Sundew and Sky to be able to fly right into my kingdom and me, if they need to," showing that she wants other dragons to be able to come to her for help if needed.

Biography

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Moon Rising
Icicle wondered if Glacier would appreciate a reason to get rid of Icicle so she would not threaten her or her daughters.
Winter Turning
When Winter scans the rankings of the IceWings in the First Circle, he notices that Snowfall has moved to the top position on the dragonet side in front of Lynx, who was in second place. When Winter is moved to take her spot, she shoots him a nasty glare that says that she hates someone else being in first place. When the IceWing dragonets are dismissed, Snowfall stays to congratulate him sarcastically and to stare at the rankings, along with Hailstorm, "as if she could reshape them with the sheer force of her eyeballs," clearly meaning that she was upset about the new rankings.
Darkness of Dragons

When Darkstalker enchanted a scroll to tell the news of the IceWings, it was revealed that Queen Glacier was dead, Snowfall had become the new queen, and that she had brought the entire IceWing army to Jade Mountain to fight the NightWings.

Snowfall, Hailstorm, and Narwhal are shown demanding the Jade Mountain staff to tell them where Darkstalker is, which they didn't know. Winter shows up, and she is shocked, looking at Hailstorm as if expecting him to disappear, then demanding to know how Winter is alive. Winter exclaims that it's not important and begins helping his friends convince her not to fight the NightWings. Before she can consider, NightWing scouts with gifts of speed appear and start attacking, throwing the discussion away and officially beginning the battle. Narwhal is killed while blocking the NightWings from her, but Snowfall keeps relatively calm throughout the battle and launches her own frostbreath attacks. She was later teleported back to the Ice Kingdom along with the other IceWings, due to Anemone's spell.

In the epilogue, it is mentioned that Snowfall wanted to close the borders and isolate the Ice Kingdom but reconsiders this after she receives large amounts of letters from her tribe requesting to attend Jade Mountain Academy. This change in heart is not very willing, though, as evidenced in book 14.

The Lost Continent Prophecy

The Poison Jungle
In the epilogue, Snowfall and Jerboa III have a meeting outside of the Great Ice Cliff. Queen Snowfall's scouts have spotted hundreds of dragons on their way to Pyrrhia. These are likely the LeafWings, some SilkWings, the two HiveWings, Cricket and Bumblebee, Turtle and Tsunami. She demands that Jerboa III extends the Great Ice Cliff to prevent the "invaders" from taking her kingdom, as she became very paranoid after the plague that killed Queen Glacier and at least twenty-three of her tribemates. Jerboa III tells her that animus magic isn't currently working for anyone on the continent. To prove this, Jerboa enchants a stick to turn anything it touches green and offers it to Snowfall, who declines it. Jerboa then taps herself and a nearby rock; nothing happens, proving that magic isn't working. Snowfall becomes enraged and storms off, saying Jerboa was useless, concluding the epilogue.
The Dangerous Gift

After the plague that Darkstalker sent to the IceWings, she was furious about the event and never wanted to see any other dragon tribes again. She mostly didn't care what other queens had to say and would have isolated the tribe, but the empathy spell convinced too many of her subjects to try to reach out to other tribes.

Later, Snowfall was seen talking to Lynx over her problems, albeit the queen was stressed and angry.

Snowfall hears about the SilkWings and LeafWings flying towards her kingdom. Lynx goes with her to see these mysterious dragons. At first she thought they were SeaWings, RainWings or NightWings, but when she meets them she finds that they are from Pantala. Before they get there, she puts on some old animus enchanted items such as the Gift of Strength, the Gift of Vision and the gift of stealth. She goes with five guards, but disguises the IceWing army with that enchantment. She reveals them and flies the dragons to the Kingdom of Sand. She stays near Jerboa's hut and has a dream about Atala, although she doesn't tell anyone about it.

Snowfall asks Lappet about the SilkWings and LeafWings a bit suspiciously. He asks her whether she has had weird dreams and she denies it. She asks him about Atala and he confirms her fears of how accurate the vision is.

She attempts to get rid of the ring in several different ways. None of them work, although Lynx notices and expresses concerns for her queen.

Later on in the book, we see that Snowfall has a dream of the Forbidden Treasury, where she meets Opal and asks her if the ring was made by her. Opal confirms this, and says that it was a tool for the queens to use to be more powerful. She then proceeds to tell that Snowfall can now take off the ring, as she has finished the visions that Snowfall was experiencing. Snowfall then takes off the ring and puts it on the pedestal, and then is able to have a good night's sleep.

Relationships

Snowfall was at first distrustful towards her sister, and became extremely paranoid when Crystal disappeared, wondering if her sister was conspiring with their cousin Winter to overthrow her. When Snowfall goes to Sanctuary, she sees an IceWing in the corner of her eye and chases them, and after confronting them realizes that the IceWing was Crystal. After a failed attack from Gharial, Snowfall is informed by Crystal that the reason she left the Ice Kingdom was because she was in love with Gharial. After realizing Crystal had no interest in taking the throne, Snowfall begins to trust her again, and even approves of her relationship with Gharial.

In the books, she is never shown to have any affection towards her mother, but as shown in the epilogue of The Poison Jungle, whenever Jerboa III mentioned her late mother's name, her wings gave a little tremor. In The Dangerous Gift, Snowfall mentally noted that she intended to spend several more years with her mother before challenging her for the throne, and Snowfall was devastated when her mother died from the plague. In her last vision from the gift of vision, she learned that Glacier chose her to become queen because she thought that Snowfall would 'fight for this kingdom like nobody else'[12] and that she was 'strong enough to rule a kingdom and do it well.'[13]

She saw Jerboa III as a way of making her tribe safer from the other dragon tribes with animus magic. This is likely due to her fear of what Darkstalker did to her mother and other IceWings in the past. However, it is likely that Snowfall only tolerated Jerboa III because of her animus magic, because when the SandWing proved that she could no longer enchant things, Snowfall called her "useless" and stormed away. After a vision shown to her by the ring of vision, she understood Jerboa III's life and why she did the things she did.

Due to Snowfall's paranoia, the IceWing Queen questions Lynx's motives as Queen Snowfall feels threatened by the latter's presence. When asked if she was spying on her, Lynx confirms this but attempts to reassure her that it's not for the reasons her majesty feared. Lynx explains that she was concerned for her queen's mental health due to the ordeals their tribe — particularly Snowfall — had been forced to endure because of Darkstalker. Snowfall notes that she sometimes has a hard time not strangling Lynx. Snowfall once thinks that she only begrudgingly keeps Lynx at the top of the dragonets circle because she is so good at everything. In school Lynx was stated to be good at everything and Snowfall's rival.

By the end of the book, Snowfall chose Lynx to be the representative on the journey to Pantala and admits to herself that Lynx is her friend, and the dragon keeping her sane.

Snowfall loves and cares for Mink. When Mink is the temporary queen placed by Tundra and Permafrost while Snowfall was gone, she started to fear and hate NightWings. When Snowfall returns, they determined that the IceWing crown was enchanted to make the queen that was wearing it hate NightWings, and orders Ivory to destroy it. Snowfall reassures Mink that she wouldn't have to be queen for a while yet, as she has no desire to be the IceWing queen, and also is in awe when Snowfall destroys the rankings wall with the gift of strength.

Snowfall and Sky are shown to interact a lot. They are on good terms and are friends; Snowfall found Sky weird, but cute and amusing. After one of her final visions, Snowfall sculpts a snail out of ice in memory of Sky. In the Ice Palace, she thinks of Sky and had stated that Mink reminds her of him.[14]

Snowfall and Wren do not have a very strong relationship. Snowfall's disbelief still towers over her liking of Wren.[citation needed]

She hadn't seemed to like her cousin or care about the fact that he was fighting his brother during the Diamond Trial. She was also furious and in disbelief when he was placed ahead of her in the rankings. In The Dangerous Gift, it's revealed that Snowfall has become distrustful of Winter. Snowfall even suspected that Winter was conspiring with her older sister, Crystal, to overthrow her. She also opened up with her cousin and allowed him back into the kingdom, into his royal title, and let him go back to Jade Mountain Academy if he wanted to. She also stated that a tiny part of her wanted him to be happy. The two seem to be on good terms now.

Quotes

"Well, […] That was unexpected."
― about Winter's placement at the top of the rankings (Winter Turning, page 258)

"There's not quite enough distance between our numbers for you to be giving me orders. Besides, I'm sure I won't be the only dragon who wants to ask Hailstorm about the Diamond Trial. Are you considering it, Hailstorm dear? With only twelve days until you're seven, I certainly hope so."
― to Hailstorm and Winter (Winter Turning, page 262)

"Oh, how funny, I wouldn't have thought you'd want him to, […] Have you forgotten that the Diamond Trial must also be undertaken by a defending challenger? That's whoever is currently in first place, of course. But only one dragon can survive the Trial. Dear me, that means it'll be brother against brother, won't it? Tsk, tsk. What a conundrum for poor Hailstorm."
― to Winter when he says Hailstorm should try the Diamond Trial (Winter Turning, page 263)

"Twenty IceWings died of that plague, including our queen, […] They started this. They're going to pay for it."
― to the dragonets of destiny (Darkness of Dragons, page 294)

"Maybe not, but they might be interested in killing all of us! […] I can think of a very big scary awful dragon who was pretty recently interested in that exact thing! […] So I want you to expand the Great Ice Cliff for me, […] I want it to go all the way around, along the entire border of the kingdom. […] Something has happened. But you can't go tell Queen Thorn."
― to Jerboa III (The Poison Jungle, epilogue, page 298)

"And guess what one of them saw? […] DRAGONS! Hundreds of dragons! Coming this way! Across the ocean! I don't know from where! But they're coming for my kingdom and I won't let them! Build me more Ice Cliff RIGHT NOW!"
― to Jerboa III (The Poison Jungle, epilogue, page 299)

"How is that possible? […] Why is this happening NOW, just when I found you?! I NEED THAT MAGIC!"
― to Jerboa III, on the subject of animus magic not working (The Poison Jungle, epilogue, page 301)

"If you can't do magic, […] then what good are you? You're completely useless!"
― to Jerboa III (The Poison Jungle, epilogue, page 301)

"Maybe my mother was not as brilliant as everyone thinks. […] Maybe if she'd thought of this, could have found something in the treasury to protect us all, and maybe she'd still be alive."
― to Lynx about Queen Glacier (The Dangerous Gift, page 57)

Trivia

  • Snowfall was at first excited to inherit her crown from Glacier, but it became a source of frustration because it was cumbersome and too large for her.[15]
  • Tui said to "not get too excited about a love interest" for Snowfall.[16]
  • Tui says that out of all of the characters she has written, Snowfall is the least like her.[17]
  • Mink, Crystal, and Snowfall were the three possible heirs to the IceWing throne, but Glacier chose the next heir on her deathbed as to avoid another succession war.[18]
  • She is the youngest IceWing queen in history.[19]
