Template:SpoilerDragonslayer Template:Charbox Sky is a young male SkyWing who appeared in Dragonslayer. He plays a major role as Wren's best friend and traveling companion, and is currently the only dragon known to speak Human. He was hatched with too little fire and, as a result, is weak. He is very empathetic and kind. He also refuses to eat meat.

Appearance

Sky is described to have small ears, large eyes and minuscule claws by Wren and that his scales have “the palest orange she’d ever seen, like a "sunset painted on wool, then left under a waterfall or out in the sunlight for too long” or "the color of the palest sunset over the mountains". He is "a very small, pathetic, skinny miniature of a dragon" and his eyes to be "pale, watery blue, like a frosted-over puddle" when he and Wren first met. His scales feel more like a lizard's, being "smooth and cool and a little pebbly, especially the softer scales under its chin and wings." He does not have smoke rising from his nostrils or the capability to sneeze or breathe fire, leading Wren to later conclude that he is fireless. When Wren first found him, he was not much bigger than a rabbit. By chapter two, however, he is noted to be 3 times bigger than Wren. He was up to her waist, and his wingspan was wider than her arms spread.

Personality

Sky is shown to be kind and gentle in nature, as well as very giggly and excitable. Despite his normally soft nature, he was shown to be capable of becoming angry, such as how he got mad at the humans who wronged Wren. He is very fond of animals, especially snails, shown by him protecting them or getting excited every time he sees one.

Biography

Pre-Series

Kestrel fled with her twin dragonets but was intercepted by Queen Scarlet at the Diamond Spray River. Scarlet offered Kestrel forgiveness for her disobedience if she killed one of the twins. Kestrel killed the dragonet with too little fire, who was Peril's brother, an act that would later haunt her. Soon after, Wren meets Sky. After she did this, Scarlet changed her mind and told Kestrel to kill Peril too and return to the Sky Kingdom for trial. Kestrel refused to kill Peril and tried to fly away with her daughter. However, because of Peril's firescales, Kestrel was burned when she grabbed her dragonet, forcing Kestrel to flee without her. This left Kestrel with permanent burn scars on her palms, which allowed Tsunami to identify her later on in The Lost Heir.

Seven years later, after she was told the truth while Kestrel was on trial, Peril said she never wanted to know Kestrel due to her brother's death at her claws, claiming, "I may not want you dead, but I don't want to know you." It is unknown whether or not Peril has forgiven her mother for her brother's death.

When Clay asked Peril to save Sunny for them, Peril was angry and asked why Sunny was so important. Tsunami told her that Sunny was like a sister to them all, and asked if Peril would try to save her brother if he was here and alive. Peril thought for a moment and agreed that she would try to help. This shows that Peril and her brother might have been friends if he had lived, or that Peril feels a connection to the brother she knew for so little.

Sky was first shown to be found by Wren, and rescued by her from a tangle of "spiky plants". Afterwords Sky and Wren spot an full grown SkyWing (Kestrel) looking for Sky. Since Sky panics at the sight of the older Dragon, Wren concludes that she's a threat to both of them so they hide from her. After Kestrel leaves, Wren and Sky flee towards the Claws of the Clouds Mountains where they live in hiding. A year later, Wren and Sky stumble on top of a mountain where they spot 5 other dragonets in a cave below the hole and Sky laments on his inability to breath fire before being interrupted by Kestrel and Webs. Sky freaks out at the sight of Kestrel presumably because Sky believes that Kestrel resented him for his lack of fire. Sky immediately parts with Wren. Sometime later, Sky travels to The Indestructible City with Wren where he is captured by General Sandstorm and is taken to Burn's Stronghold.

Trivia

  • Sky is all but confirmed to be Ember (Peril's Brother). This is a reasonable assumption, as hints are dropped throughout Dragonslayer, such as:
    • It is specified to be the year of Ember's birth when Sky is found.
    • Ember and Sky both have the same scale color and a lack of fire.
    • The dragon seen flying around the river looking for Ember/Sky matches up appearance-wise with that of Kestrel (all the way down to her burn scar).
  • He is said to be obsessed with snails, among turtles and other animals.
  • He is vegetarian, being the first-ever SkyWing confirmed to not eat meat.
  • He is the first known dragon able to speak Human, although limited.
  • He is basically the complete opposite of Peril, personality wise.
