The Scorching was an early period of time in Pyrrhia when the dragon tribes warred and took it over from the scavengers, the dominant life form at the time. It is also mentioned by Webs in Darkness of Dragons before Thrush asks about Darkstalker. It is currently the only known war between scavengers and dragons.

Dragons use it as a measure of time. For example, Moonwatcher tells Darkstalker in a dream that the current year is 5,012 years since the Scorching (5,012 AS or After Scorching) in Moon Rising. The seven Pyrrhian dragon tribes (RainWings, NightWings, SandWings, IceWings, SeaWings, SkyWings, and MudWings) were formed afterward based on their according abilities and habitats. Each tribe appointed a queen, allowing dragons to form complex societies, which made it extremely tough for scavengers to kill individual dragons.

The Scorching, as shown in The Lost Heir (graphic novel)

The Scorching was an early period in Pyrrhia when the dragons warred and took it over from the humans, the dominant life form at the time. It is currently the only known war between humans and dragons. The series takes place 5,012 years after the Scorching.

Description

At least five thousand years ago, scavengers swarmed the continent. They were organized and advanced, being the dominant life form at the time. Webs mentions that stories prior to the Scorching would be best described as legends and fairy tales due to unlikely they were to be advanced.[1]

Eventually, the dragons united and overthrew the scavengers. The dragons then formed tribes and each one appointed a queen, allowing them to form complex societies. This made it hard for scavengers to kill individual dragons. After the Scorching, transformation and resettlement occurred[citation needed] as well as constant warfare.[2]

Trivia

 • Dragons keep track of the date by counting the years since the Scorching, as shown when Moonwatcher mentioned that five thousand and twelve years had passed from the Scorching.
 • Tui has said that she would eventually like to make a Legends about the Scorching.
