The SandWing treasure were lost treasure stolen from the royal SandWings' treasury in roughly 4,992 AS. It was thought to have been stolen by the humans who killed Queen Oasis until Blister revealed by the end of The Brightest Night that she had stolen most the treasure. Various well-known jewels, such as the Lazulite Dragon and the SandWing Scepter, were lost to Heath, one of the three humans who murdered Oasis. The thievery of the SandWing treasure was one of the prominent reasons why the seven dragon tribes participated in the War of SandWing Succession. As of the end of Dragonslayer, Ivy and Leaf returned all of Heath's treasure to the SandWings.

Some of the SandWing treasure once belonged to the NightWings of Darkstalker's era, plundered from the lost city of night after the NightWings fled to the NightWing island.[1]

Known SandWing Treasure

The Eye of Onyx is an enchanted pendant, characterized by the wings made from molded, beaten gold, framing an orb of polished black stone. The wings are red-gold-orange in color on either side and set on a chain of hammered golden links.[2] It was hidden in Oasis's corpse's skull by Rose, and was returned to the SandWings by the end of The Brightest Night.

Whoever holds the Eye of Onyx rules the Kingdom of Sand and the SandWings. It chooses the best dragon for the job, regardless or royal blood or affiliation, and has chosen commoners over royalty before.[3]

The Eye of Onyx was created by an ancient animus dragon named Jerboa, who lived and disappeared over 2,000 years prior to The Dragonet Prophecy.[4]

Queen Thorn currently owns the Eye of Onyx.

The Lazulite Dragon

Sunny received the Lazulite Dragon from Leaf in exchange for Ivy's safety in The Brightest Night. It is a blue statue of a dragon with green emerald eyes carved from lapis lazuli.[5]

Tui hinted that the Lazulite Dragon and the SandWing Scepter may be important later in the story. Its current owner or location is unknown.[citation needed]

The SandWing Scepter

The SandWing Scepter was mentioned briefly by Starflight when he was lecturing the dragonets in the caves beneath the mountain. Sunny also mentioned the scepter in The Brightest Night when she tried to guess what the humans had stolen.

Invisibility Necklace

The invisibility necklace is a long, thin, coiled chain made of a silvery-black metal. It is capable of turning whoever wears it invisible,[6] and it works even when two wears it at the same time.[7] Stone currently possesses the invisibility necklace.

History

The Dragonet Prophecy

The dragonets of destiny acted out the start of the War of SandWing Succession, in which Clay portrayed the scavenger who stole all the SandWing treasure. Tsunami then listed the names of the most well-known treasures, including the Lazulite Dragon, the SandWing Scepter, and the Eye of Onyx.

Glory briefly recalled how Oasis had owned the SandWing treasure.

Smolder brought Sunny out of Burn's weirdling tower to ask for her opinion about what happened to the treasure. Sunny then said that Burn must have wanted a treasure that was stolen and began to list the ones she knew of, such as the Lazulite Dragon, before confirming that Burn wanted the Eye of Onyx, as Smolder accidentally led her to this conclusion.

After finding Leaf and Ivy and asking for the treasure, Sunny was given the Lazulite Dragon and a dreamvisitor.

At the end of the book, Rose revealed the rest of the treasure hidden within the jaws of the skeleton remains of Queen Oasis. Among the treasure hidden was the Eye of Onyx, which Sunny gave to her mother, Thorn, declaring her the new queen of the SandWings. Blister attempted to take it away from her, but lightning shot out of it, killing Blister and reducing her to a pile of ashes.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

When Onyx challenged Thorn for the throne, Qibli used the weather bracelets to cast a sandstorm, as he was afraid the Eye of Onyx would choose Onyx over Thorn due to her royal heritage. Inside the palace, Thorn told Qibli about the history of the Eye of Onyx; how Jerboa enchanted it to choose the best possible queen as a gift to the queen of SandWings, how it has chosen normal dragons over royalty before, and that the current royal family was not the same as the original one. She then jokingly requested that the enchantment was a bit less extreme, so she could just retire quietly in peace instead of getting incinerated. It was revealed Thorn put a fake Eye of Onyx in her treasury to "fool thieves and save their lives," which had been stolen by Vulture.

Legends

In the introduction, Rose snuck into the treasure room alone to steal as much of Queen Oasis's treasure as she could. However, Oasis attacked them. Heath and Stone managed to get away with the most of the stolen treasure, but Rose had gone missing. At some point later on in the story, Rose hid the Eye of Onyx in Oasis's skull.

The treasure was mentioned frequently throughout the book. It was then revealed that Heath had hidden the treasure from the other residents of Valor. It contained the gold nuggets, glittering gems, the Lazulite Dragon, and an invisibility necklace that Stone used.

Winglets

Blister mentioned the treasure when she convinced Burn not to fight her for the throne after discovering Queen Oasis's corpse. Someone suggested the fight, but when one of the princes pointed out that it would not be fair to Blaze, Blister agreed and said that first, they should discover who killed Oasis, adding quietly to Burn: "Besides, we don't have the Eye of Onyx."

Trivia

  • After the NightWings moved to the volcano, the SandWings raided their palace and stole a dreamvisitor.[1] This led many dragons to think a SandWing animus had created the dreamvisitors,[8] though this was proven incorrect in Moon Rising.[9]
