In the past, RainWings were ruled by the RainWing royal family, but since all of [[Grandeur]]'s heirs were deemed unworthy and too lazy to take the throne, Grandeur placed her eggs with those of the rest of the tribe in hopes of finding a queen in spirit rather than blood. Grandeur's solution proved to be rather ineffective, as although Grandeur did eventually find volunteers, they were indolent, unsuccessful, lazy, forgetful, incompetent, and often selfish in their reigns. Grandeur decided that it would be the best for the tribe if each new ruler, including herself, was only to reign for one month at a time before switching to the next. Queen Glory is the current ruler of the RainWing Kingdom after Grandeur found out that she was not only worthy but had royal RainWing blood in her. Queen Glory proved she was worthy to ascend to the RainWing throne by having a contest, with her appointed dragons winning each of the activities.

RainWings tend to be pacifists who typically don't rush into fights, as shown when the NightWings captured them and experimented on their venom, although they likely have not always been this way. They don't have much connection with the world beyond the rainforest, as shown when [[Jambu]] didn't know about the [[dragonets of destiny]] and when [[Magnificent]] didn't know about challenging for a throne, things typical dragons do know about. Instead of having a palace, like most tribes, the RainWing queen resides in an ordinary-sized treehouse usually decorated with flowers that other dragons can visit her in. They will line up and wait when they want to talk to the queen about something. Although RainWings are peaceful dragons, there could have been a time where RainWings were at war with another tribe, due to Grandeur hinting to Glory that she remembers when they used their camouflage to hide from enemies. RainWings, also known as Rainforest Dragons to scavengers, are a Pyrrhian dragon tribe living in the Rainforest Kingdom. They are ruled by Queen Glory.

The RainWings were not involved in the War of SandWing Succession.

Description

RainWings are long and graceful, with ruffs behind their ears, curved horns, and prehensile tails that are used primarily for climbing trees and hanging in the rainforest they inhabit, like birds of paradise. When afraid, insulted, or angry, RainWings flare their ruffs as a sign of aggression or hostility.[1]

RainWings have small, round scales that can change color. Most RainWings prefer vivid, bright colors. They can control the colors of the scales, though they often have a hard time stopping strong emotions from showing through. Most RainWings have a 'default' color scheme that they set their scales to when they aren't showing emotions.[citation needed] RainWings eyes can change color, and they may not be able to camoflauge when they are very afraid or in pain.[2] RainWings are able to blend into their surroundings at will otherwise.[citation needed]

RainWings are able to uncannily mimic the appearance of other tribes with their scales.[3] RainWing dragonets develop their color-shifting scales while they are still in their eggs, which are a smooth white.[4]

Diets

RainWings are generally inclined to vegetarianism, but some will eat monkeys and other rainforest animals if they feel like catching them.[citation needed]Fruit and various rainforest plants are the main part of their diets. Sunlight may act as a partial food source for RainWings.[citation needed]

Abilities

RainWings have a long, prehensile tail for swinging through the rainforest, long fangs, and color changing scales. Some RainWings may be able to mimic bird calls.[15]
They are capable of absorbing sunlight, which gives them energy and makes their scales brighter. They have a dedicated time to sleep in the sun, known as "suntime", and RainWings who cannot sleep in the sun may have duller or unchangable scales.[16][17] Sunlight is also vital to the development of other RainWing abilities, such as venom, and to their good mood.[18][9]

RainWing scales change color by bending light.[19]When at ease, RainWing scales may reflect their emotions. They can also manipulate their scales to be any color they wish.[20] Strong emotions may break through a chosen scale color.[16] RainWings can also use their scales for camoflauge, reflecting their surrounding and making them effectively invisible to most dragons. Other RainWings may be able to spot a disguised dragon; this is a skill they develop young, during games of hide-and-seek.[21] RainWings can change the color of their eyes, and are able to manipulate a fine level of detail onto their scales.[22][23]
RainWings who are born blind always show their emotions on their scales, and cannot manually change them. When relaxed, their scales will automatically camoflauge to their surroundings.[24]

RainWings have long front fangs and a jaw that can unhinge to shoot corrosive venom. This venom only effects organic material, such as animals and plants, and inorganic materials such as rock and metal are immune.[25] It can be deadly if it reaches a dragon's bloodstream or eyes.[citation needed] If a dragon survives a venom attack, it will leave warped, scarred scales or skin.[26] RainWing venom is neutralized by contact with the venom of a blood relative.[27] Dragonet venom is weaker than adult venom.[28] RainWing venom is black and will dry into glossy droplets (reminiscent of obsidian) after some time exposed to air.[citation needed]

RainWings cannot see as far or as well as IceWings or SkyWings.[29]

Society

RainWings live an idyllic lifestyle, with easy to food, shelter, and no involvment in conflicts. They are mostly ignored by other tribes.[citation needed] RainWings are viewed by other tribes as lazy, unintelligent, and weak.[30][31]

RainWings have a unique, peaceful royal challenge, in accordance with their pacifistic beliefs. Before Queen Glory's royal challenge, queens were on a rotation, and the position was given to any dragon who wanted it.[32] The dragons with "shiny names" were more likely to want the position.[33]

They have blowguns with sleeping darts, coated in tree-frog poison.[34] These darts are used as a form of protection, to knock out strange dragons wandering into the forest, and for games.[34][8]

RainWings keep sloths as pets, often when a sloth chooses a dragon by climbing on them during suntime.[35] A dragon may own many sloths.[36]. It is taboo to eat a sloth in the Rainforest.

RainWings perform a venom test before having eggs, ensuring that they are not blood relatives.[37] This prevents inbreeding in the tribe, as formal families do not exist.[12] RainWings engage in communal raising of dragonets, with everyone pitching in to help.[27] RainWing dragonets are trained to aim their venom, glide through trees without getting snagged, and gather fruit.[38][27][39] They are not taught to read or write, but some may train as medics, as RainWings have multiple healers in their village. These healers keep their scales calming shades of blue and white.[40]

Under the rule of Queen Glory, RainWings have begun to sort eggs, and may begin to form family units. Previously, they would not count or track their eggs.[4] They have dragons keeping watch in the Rainforest for danger, both RainWings and NightWings.[41][42] They are also beginning to read and write, and are attempting to grow a moon globe tree (from the Ice Kingdom) for light.[43]

In the time of Darkstalker, RainWings were a more threatening tribe.[44] They had merchants selling both fruits and potions to the other tribes.[45][46] They could also read and write at some point prior to the events of the series.[47]

Names

RainWings may be named after Rainforest flora and fauna (such as Kinkajou, Tamarin, Jambu, and Orchid), fruits (such as Banana and Coconut), and adjectives (such as Exquisite, Handsome, and Dazzling.)

RainWings have a list of names that they cycle through; when they reach the end of the list, they return to the beginning, meaning that many RainWings have had the same names throughout history.[33]
