Template:Infobox Location The lost city of night was the original home of the NightWings before they moved. It is unknown where they went after they left, but it is later revealed in The Hidden Kingdom that they ended up on the NightWing island. It was one of the main settings for the book Darkstalker. No living dragon except Foeslayer knew where it was until Darkstalker emerged from under the mountain. It is located just south of the Kingdom of Sand, on a peninsula known as the Talon Peninsula. Over two thousand years, it has slowly sunk into the ocean until it became the smallest kingdom. It was once the fifth largest Kingdom.

Description

The kingdom's terrain consists of caverns and ravines,[1] with deep canyons in between them. Caves delve deep into the mountains, and the coast is lined with rocky black-sand beaches and littered with tide pools and half-flooded caves. In Darkstalker, it seems like the peninsula is shaped like claws, but the peninsula is now is far smaller and lacks these claw-like shapes. The geographical appearance has changed much since the period of Darkstalker to after the War of SandWing Succession, with most of the peninsula having collapsed into the sea at an unknown time. As the elements have made the "talon" smaller, the Night Kingdom is now the smallest in Pyrrhia. Surrounding the border is the mountain range which is known as Darkstalker's Teeth by the IceWings, which is where Darkstalker's IceWing repelling curse was placed.

Notable Features

Vigilance's palace was the center palace for the NightWing tribe and was once inhabited by Queen Vigilance. The palace includes royal suites (one of which Fathom and his bodyguards had stayed in), a throne room, a royal tower,[2] and more. The palace was briefly ruled by Darkstalker when he became king of the NightWings and brought most of his tribe back to the lost city. However, he was soon defeated, and the tribe returned to the Rainforest Kingdom. It is part of the Great Diamond, made up of the palace, a school, a library, and a museum.

The throne room is usually used for Queen Vigilance's parties. It is also the site of fights for enchanted armbands and appears many times in the futures seen by Clearsight and Darkstalker.

Great Diamond

The Great Diamond is what the NightWings called the shape formed by the tribe's most important buildings. The palace and school were placed to the north, not far from each other, and the museum and library finished the shape toward the south. The palace was noted to be the largest of the four buildings. These four buildings formed a diamond-shaped plaza, hence its name. There was a temporary stage set up in the middle of the plaza for concerts.[3]

NightWing School

All the NightWing dragonets attended this school. It was very sophisticated (and more magnificent than Jade Mountain Academy). It housed dragonets from ages one and up and was designed to resemble Queen Vigilance's palace, with its grey and black marble floors, hanging gardens, and towers. The school is located north of the palace and is one of the buildings making up the Great Diamond. Known teachers here are Truthfinder and Allknowing. Aquariums and terrariums covered the walls, some glowing with phosphorescent rocks or plankton. Long-finned fighting fish, also called bettas, were kept in separate bowls and a tortoise in a glass cage. Owls were kept in cages near scavengers. Tamarin monkeys and crocodiles were also kept in the classrooms.[4]

The Tower of Knowledge is a tower in the lost city of night, described as a tall, cylinder-shaped tower with no windows or doors. The only entrance was through the roof, which was open to the sky. [5] It was used as a classroom; Allknowing taught seers inside it during Darkstalker. Students who attended classes there included Clearsight, Morrowwatcher, Jewel-eyes, and Vision. Allknowing taught them to tell the difference between a dream and a vision and how to make visions into cryptic prophecies. It was the center of the five towers making up the NightWing school.

Darkstalker's home

It was described to have a pale blue door, which led into a sunlit room adorned with white rugs and glittering crystals (Clearsight assumed this was to make Arctic feel more at home) and a couch in the middle. One wall was lined with scrolls tucked into little niches. The kitchen was described to be 'impossibly clean' and had tools in it that Clearsight had never seen and couldn't imagine how to use.[6] There was a fireplace with a painting of the family done by Whiteout on the mantle, the picture painted in shades of blue and making the family appear more related than in real life.[7]

Whiteout's room contained many paintings of IceWings and NightWings flying together. Most were done in shades of blue, and Darkstalker describes some to be from Whiteout's "Wishful Thinking" series. There were also many pictures of constellations, the three moons, and starscapes.[8]

Darkstalker's room was down the hall from Whiteout's, and his sleeping spot was marked by a pile of neatly folded purple and white blankets. He also had a trunk, where he would keep extra blankets and a few weapons. His desk was bare except for cloth and three inkwells containing black, royal blue, and emerald green ink. There was a scroll rack by the desk, and behind it was Darkstalker's scroll and an invisible inkwell hidden behind a stone in the wall.[9]

As for the rest of the NightWings, their houses were like Darkstalker's. They were built on the sides of mountains or in canyons or large ravines, being placed higher and closer to the stars, if you have a higher rank.

North Beach

North Beach is an expanse of beach at the north end of the Night Kingdom peninsula, rocky and pebbled, unlike the southern shores' smooth sandy beaches. It faced a bay with the Kingdom of Sand on the far side, just out of dragon eyesight but close enough that most NightWings avoided it. There are giant boulders strewn on the beach. It has also been noted that dragons have practiced swimming there.[10]

Borderland Mountain

Borderland Mountain is the mountain within the lower reaches of the NightWing palace.[11] The area has a forest and a lake.[11]

Trivia

  • According to Tui, the Night Kingdom shrank due to Darkstalker's magic, so when he was repairing the kingdom, he was actually destroying it.[17]
    • This would explain why the "Claw" of Pyrrhia shrank and the rest of it didn't.
    • It also means that the Night Kingdom can only be repaired by natural occurrences now, because if an animus tries repairing it, it'll get even smaller.
  • Foeslayer has stated that the Night Kingdom was protected by an "unbeatable" air defense team.[18]

History

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

The lost city of night was mentioned when Moon delivered the Jade Mountain Prophecy. This prophecy contained the lines:

"Jade Mountain will fall beneath thunder and ice

Unless the lost city of night can be found"

This Kingdom was mentioned again in the Jade Mountain Prophecy when Moonwatcher said:

"Jade Mountain will fall beneath thunder and ice,

Unless the lost city of night can be found."

It is even mentioned a couple of times through the book, including when the Jade Winglet visited the Night Kingdom's ruins mistakenly believing it was the lost city of night.

While Darkstalker was leading the NightWings to the lost city of night, he flies ahead when the other NightWings were sleeping. Turtle stealthily and silently follows him.

When Darkstalker reached the Kingdom, he flew into the NightWings' old school. While under his invisibility spell, Turtle places a marble he had found in front of Darkstalker, and he thought that Clearsight was still alive and trying to tell him something.

The lost city of night was the setting of part of this book. In the city, they rescued Turtle from Darkstalker and learned that the NightWings were about to start a war against the IceWings. The dragonets then hurried back to Jade Mountain.

Legends

The lost city of night was the primary setting in Darkstalker and was home to the two NightWing protagonists, Darkstalker and Clearsight.
