Literature is an extrordinarily prevelant part of Pyrrhia's culture. Scrolls are written and read by the majority of the dragon tribes. They are printed with ink on an unconfirmed type of paper (although, it is likely vellum or parchment, as hinted at by Starflight).[1] Dragons are almost always shown writing on scrolls by dipping their claws in ink and scratching the paper.[2] Sometimes dragons use things like reeds to write. For example, in Winter Turning, Moonwatcher is shown using a "long, thin reed" to draw the mountain she saw in Icicle's dream.[3]

In Pantala, books fill in the role of scrolls.

Tribes

HiveWings

It is seen that HiveWings have textbooks, as shown in The Hive Queen and The Lost Continent.

IceWings

Winter explains that his mother made him memorize stories of dragons attempting the Diamond Trial, revealing that IceWings can, in fact, read.[4] He also mentions IceWing sagas that "told the history of the world".[5]

LeafWings

In The Poison Jungle, Hazel is seen making books.[6]

MudWings

Pheasant said she was reading about the Prophecy, hinting that MudWings sometimes read scrolls.[7] MudWings are shown to be capable readers once more when Sora is seen reading a scroll in the school library.[8] Queen Moorhen mentions how she has read Queen Coral's scrolls before, giving more evidence of literacy in MudWings.[9]

NightWings

The NightWings both read and wrote many scrolls, and both Starflight and Mastermind have always been fascinated by them. There used to be extensive and impressive libraries on the NightWing Island[10] and in the lost city of night.[11]

RainWings

RainWings did not read scrolls and never knew about them or the rest of Pyrrhia until Glory claimed the RainWing throne.[12] Sunny was seen teaching a RainWing dragonet class how to read.[13] and Kinkajou went to a nearby school to get some paper and a blank scroll for Moonwatcher to draw on and record what she saw in Icicle's dream.[14] There is also a very old RainWing scroll in the library in Possibility from an unknown time period.[15]

SandWings

Thorn, during her time spent as the leader of the Outclaws, had been shown writing wanted posters.[16] During her reign, Oasis had a system that intercepted messages written on scrolls.[17] Sunny, Thorn, and Smolder also went into a room in the SandWing fortress that had many scrolls.[17]

SeaWings

The SeaWings often read scrolls, most of which are written by Queen Coral. SeaWing scrolls are written with a mixture of squid ink and a whale blood, a mixture concocted by Whirlpool, to make the words permanent and waterproof.[2]

SilkWings

It is known that SilkWings read books.

SkyWings

Peril lied to Scarlet about reading about the Champion's Shield in a scroll, and Queen Scarlet replied, saying, "with claws that burn through paper right when you touch it."[18] They also use scrolls for messaging.[19]

  • In The Lost Heir, one of the panels shows The Missing Princess, but written differently with dots in some of the letters. This shows an example of dragon letters.[56]
  • There are a few mentions of books in Pyrrhia. In Darkness of Dragons, Qibli mentions a catalogue of books in the NightWing library.[57] Also, while Lynx tells Snowfall how she is not agreeable, Lynx mentions reading a book.[58]
