- "If losing your treasure is the worst punishment you get for everything you’ve done, you’ll be more lucky than you deserve. Let’s go home."
- — Lark to Heath, Dragonslayer
Template:Charbox Lark is a female scavenger appearing in Dragonslayer. She is Ivy's mother and Heath's wife.
Personality
Lark seems to care for her daughter, and answers many of her questions, although with some difficult ones she has trouble coming up with answers for them. She also seems to have respect for her husband. She can be stern when she needs to. Lark apparently dislikes animals and dragons, as she believe that they don’t have feelings. She clearly has a lot of respect for Heath in the beginning of Dragonslayer, but as the book goes on she seems to become more aware of his flaws and lies. Lark also seems to be practical and smart as she had the idea of digging a tunnel to ensure that they could get water without having to go above ground.
Biography
The first time Lark appeared was when Ivy asked her mother if Heath was famous. Lark answered that yes, he was, and the two went on to have a conversation about dragonslaying, which Ivy mistakenly called 'dragonstaring'.She appeared again in Ivy's flashback when she told her daughter the story of the dragonslayer as a bedtime story. She was mentioned several times throughout the book, mainly by Ivy, and her name (Lark) was one of the passwords that Ivy and her friends tried when attempting to open the box of jewels and valuables which Heath stole from the desert dragon queen. Lark also helped Leaf to collect the Dragonslayer's treasure.
Quotes
"Yes, he's very famous, dear. Probably the most famous person in the world."
"Dragonslayer, Ivy. Yes. Well, partly because he's the lord of the town, but mostly because he's the only dragonslayer alive today. And it wasn't that long ago."
"Slayer, Ivy. No, Uncle Stone didn't slay the dragon. He was just there when it happened."
"...It means Daddy poked the dragon very hard until it fell over and didn't get up again."
"Ye-es, sort of. But he didn't eat the dragon afterward."
"Humans don't eat dragons, silly bean. Also, he kind of had to run away in a hurry from the other dragons."
"There were quite a lot of them, Ivy. And dragons are very big."
"No, you don't. We're safe down here, far away from all the dragons. Your father keeps us all safe."
"...No, your uncle just... gets sad sometimes, and then he thinks about that night and gets upset."
"I'll tell you when you're older, Ivy."
"Ivy, go to sleep."
"It's an animal, Ivy. It doesn't have feelings. And your father is a hero. Now shhhh."
"NO, Ivy."
"Once upon a time, a mighty hero went forth into the desert and slayed the dragon queen. [...] He battled bravely into the night until she lay dead on the sand, and then he galloped home with the greatest treasure the world has ever seen."
"Shhh, [...] No one can see it. It's in a secret place."
"Daffodil has so many helpful thoughts."
"Of course I have." - About seeing Heath's treasure
"Those girls are here again, [...] But I can tell them you're studying."
"But I have that meeting with the gardeners, [...] We're working on a new solution to the sunlight problem."
"Ivy can stay home by herself, dear, [...] She's fourteen! She's almost a full Wingwatcher."
"Heath--"
"He's... got a lot on his mind."
"I do think it is! [...] Right now your father is worried that something might happen to us. There's a man-- a very powerful man-- who's been trying for years to get your father to come work for him."
"Slay dragons, of course, [...] He's the lord of the Indestructible City. [...] Anyway, the last couple of messengers have been more... persistent that the ones before. Your father is worried about what they might do. I think he's afraid they might even kidnap one of us. [...] Not to mention all the unrest in Valor, [...] So many angry people, all wanting your father to fix everything."
"I wouldn't be gone long, [...] It is pretty important... if I go, do you think we could keep it between ourselves?"
"All right. Yes. I will! Thank you, Ivy."
