"I don't know why. But why doesn't matter — what matters is how to protect you so no one realizes it doesn't work on you. You'll have to stay alert for when it happens. We'll find places for you to hide. The good news is she doesn't do it often. I'll keep you safe, Cricket, I promise."
— Katydid to Cricket about Wasp's mind-control, The Hive Queen

Katydid is an adult female HiveWing who was introduced in The Lost Continent. Formerly a resident of Cicada Hive, she now resides in the LeafSilk Kingdom and is in a relationship with Malachite.

Description

Katydid has a kind face[1] and yellow-orange scales that are freckled with black spots.[2]

Personality

Katydid is often sad,[3] but she cares deeply for Cricket. Katydid is also protective, as she kept Cricket's secret from Cadelle and her father. She is willing to do most of the housework and is shown to keep her promises, as she took Cricket to the eye doctor to get her glasses when she was three. When Cricket presented the truth about Wasp to Katydid, Katydid acted like the truth was another version of the world instead of the only real version.[4] She did not believe that the mind-control was wrong, and thought of it as the same as if the queen was ordering her to do something while standing right next to her.

Biography

The Lost Continent Prophecy

The Lost Continent
Katydid first appeared when Queen Wasp originally mind-controlled all of the HiveWings into hunting down Blue. Blue and Cricket had hidden in a tunnel connected to a trapdoor in Cricket's school library when Katydid entered, along with Bombardier. Blue noted that Cricket was watching her the whole time and asked who she was. Cricket explained that she was her "sister and best friend." Cricket also referenced her several times when Blue asked about mind-control, saying that Katydid did not mind it and could remember everything she did while affected. Cricket mentioned that Katydid worried about Cricket, unlike the rest of her family and peers.
The Hive Queen

Katydid first appeared in Cricket's flashback, where in it, Katydid was being mind controlled by Wasp. After Katydid was released from the mind control, she returned back home, late during the night. After Cricket revealed that she could not be mind controlled, Katydid promised to do the best she could to keep her safe.

Later, while Cricket and her friends were hiding at Jewel Hive, she spotted Katydid with Lady Scarab at Cadelle's house. Puzzled by her appearance at Jewel Hive, Cricket decided to leave the water tower they were hiding in to talk to Katydid. Katydid was ecstatic and surprised to Cricket, before realizing how much trouble Cricket was in. Cricket asked her why she was here, and Katydid explained that she was here because of Scarab. Cricket tried to further interrogate Katydid, then Katydid blurted out that Cadelle and Cricket's father were not her real parents. This shocked Cricket, but Katydid had to leave before she could ask who her real parents were.

Later, when Cricket and the others were at the party, guards were seen storming Lady Scarab's house, under the impression she had Cricket. Lady Scarab defended herself and stated that she was not harboring any fugitives but instead had a guest upstairs sleeping. After a fight nearly broke out, Katydid presented herself and was taken away through the mind-control of Queen Wasp. Cricket later discussed with Scarab about Cricket's origins. Cricket found out that Katydid was her mother and that Wasp wanted to hurt Scarab by forbidding her secretary, Malachite to be with his lover Katydid.
The Poison Jungle
Katydid was briefly mentioned by Cricket, stating that Hawthorn could use his "antidote" to save her mother.
The Flames of Hope
Katydid briefly appeared at the end of The Flames of Hope, living with her partner and daughter.

Relationships

Though Katydid is her daughter, the two did not seem to have a loving relationship with one another. After Cadelle had abruptly moved to Jewel Hive, Katydid was mentioned to have cried.[5] The two grew more and more distant after Cricket's hatching.

Katydid is Cricket's mother, and she and Cricket share almost everything with one another.[6] Katydid is the only dragon Cricket loved before escaping Cicada Hive with Blue, and Katydid was the only one of their family who took care of Cricket. Cricket looks forward to seeing her mother, as she is kind to her.[7] She is often exasperated by Cricket's curiosity as it only made her life harder.[8] Katydid and Cricket would find a hiding place for Cricket in each new place they went to, in case a whole hive command happened.

Malachite was Katydid's partner. Queen Wasp forbade their marriage before she took Malachite away before he even knew Cricket existed. When Malachite was temporarily free of the mind-control in the middle of The Flames of Hope, he asked about Katydid. After they were both freed from the othermind's control they happily reunited along with their daughter and went to live in the LeafSilk Kingdom together.

Katydid and Lady Scarab have an odd relationship. It is implied that Scarab helped Katydid to get revenge on Wasp, but it seems that deep down, Scarab cares about Katydid, actively defending her from Wasp's soldiers.
