The Scorching was a period of time, in Pyrrhia, when the dragons overthrew the scavengers, or humans. Dragon tribes were formed based on abilities (sand, water, mud, etc). Each tribe formed a queen, thus allowing dragons to get help when they needed it making it extremely hard for humans to kill even one dragon. It is mentioned several times in the first book. Little is know about the Scorching but it was most likely a horrible time for scavengers.
