Template:InfoboxKestrel was a SkyWing of "jewel-hard" rust-colored scales with intense light flickering in her orange-yellow eyes. Starflight is terrified of her extremely short temper. As one of the Guardians of the Dragonets, she guarded the dragonets while they were "imprisoned" in the hidden cave. She had always bullied and abused Glory, for she discriminates the RainWings more than anything. She was also a member of the Talons of Peace. Her mate is unknown, and she was the mother of Peril. She acted as the antagonist to The Dragonets of Destiny.
Biography
Kestrel was one of Queen Scarlet's most loyal soldiers. She later entered the breeding program, but the egg she brought forth contained twins, a rare and unwanted occurrence among the SkyWings. One of the dragonets, the female, got twice the amount of fire that she should have had, and her brother had too little. Since dragonets as such are always killed, Kestrel tried to save them but was cornered at the Diamond Spray. Scarlet told her to sacrifice one and she would not hold Kestrel responsible. In addition, the SkyWing Queen said she'd let the latter live and go free. Kestrel killed the young male, her own son, an act that haunted her the rest of her life. Scarlet lied and didn't keep up her end of the bargain, compelling Kestrel to flee for her own life. Kestrel attempted to bring Peril, but being burned from Peril's scales, she was forced to leave her behind.
She later acted as a guardian and the trainer of fighting, plus she was to teach the strength/weaknesses of every tribe, though she only yelled at them much, for the five Dragonets of Destiny, a task she loathed, because it reminded her of her lost children. She was one of the reasons the dragonets were such desperate to escape, although Sunny never bothered.
Later captured and imprisoned again by Queen Scarlet, she was set free when the dragonets escaped via the aid of Peril. She later parted ways with them and her daughter, leaving them up to her own devices.
In the epilogue of the first book, Blister and Morrowseer had betrayed her. Morrowseer had said that neither the dragonets nor Blister/himself needed the SkyWing; thus Blister slashed Kestrel's throat, and stabbed her in the heart with the poison-tipped barb, then proceeded to fling her off a nearby cliff into the ocean. Sometime later, a SeaWing guard (possibly Piranha) had found Kestrel, deceased.
Personality
For the reason that she had lost both her dragonets and had been exiled from the SkyWing Kingdom, Kestrel had always been always bad-tempered, grumpy and hot-headed. Her words stung, like they always did.
Quotes
We await the wings of fire; not that it'll do us much good now, Hvitur is dead.
So it's just you, me, and Dune to raise the little worms. For a prophecy that can never be fulfilled. Let's break the cursed eggs now and be done with it. We'll be long gone before the Talons of Peace return to the dragonets. 'All right, enough. I'm the strongest dragon in the Talons of Peace. You need me. It doesn't matter how I feel about nasty little dragonets. Although I though at least one of them would be a SkyWing.
Of all the horrible ideas. RainWings are wretched creatures. Nothing like SkyWings.
WHICH LEFT WAS THAT, USELESS? Are all MudWings this stupid? OR ARE YOU JUST DEAF? 'I'm your teacher. Nothing I do is cheating. Get down here and fight like a SkyWing. 'Oh, yes? Which opponent would you prefer, the stunted SandWing or the lazy RainWing? Because I'm sure you'll get to choose out on the battlefield. 'Where's the violent little monster I saw when you hatched? That's the dragonet we need for the prophecy. 'Aren't you sweet. Protecting a dragon who tried to kill you while you were still an egg. 'All right, we're finished here anyway. I'll mark another failure in your scroll, MudWing.
And you're talking back. That means no sleeping in the river tonight. The rest of you, learn from the SeaWing's mistakes and study the correct way. 'I know who the ringleader was. Cut off the head, and the problem goes away.
Coming here? With no warning? After six years, suddenly he's interested? Does he even know what happened? Does he know about the broken egg and the RainWing? Or the defective SandWing? 'I don't like it either. I never have. And she's not a SkyWing. We're supposed to have a SkyWing.
There was an accident. We lost the SkyWing egg, so we had to get another one somewhere... It was his idea. He brought her egg here!
Ungrateful lizard! Stupid SeaWing. Complaining to the first strange dragon you see! Trying to make us look bad! Whining about your life, after all we've given up for you! Our job is to keep you alive, or else I'd have strangled you myself a long time ago. 'Maybe some time away from the river will teach you to' be grateful for what you have. All your big dreams of you wonderful family. They don't care about you. When it's time to fulfill the prophecy, you'll be alive, and the Talons of Peace will have you, and that's all that matters. 'You were all awful today. No dinner for any of you. Go to bed, and I don't want to hear a squawk out of anyone until morning. 'We have more chains! We could throw one around your snout if you would like me to force you to be quiet. Or we would chain up one of you friends. Perhaps Clay would like to spend the night hanging from a stalactite, so you have some company out here.
He'll be back by midday. It has to be done be then. He doesn't want to see her again. He'll find us a SkyWing. Properly this time. No colorful substitutions. It has to be me. She's just a RainWing, but she still might get away from you. That was totally different. Glory is just a RainWing. I don't care about her. I don't even like her. I'll do it tonight while she's sleeping. I can get in there and break her neck before the others know what I'm doing, especially with the bossy one safely chained up. Tsunami's the only one who could stop me. I can handle him. Even if he finally gets mad like we want him to, there's nothing he can do to stop me.
Poor, poor Scarlet. Everyone betrays you. Well, you've got me now. Let these worthless others go. I won't fight. I'll come with you. Just leave them. These dragonets have nothing to do with the SkyWings. They're no prizes. They're useless, every one of them.
I thought you were dead. Black rocks? What black rocks? Kill them and let's go!
No thanks to you five. You wanted so badly to be free. Now do you see why we had to protect you? Oh, we did everything wrong. Go ahead and blame us, but we did as the Talons of Peace asked. You would probably all be dead if we hadn't. Oh? What is your magnificent plan, if I may ask? Fine. What do I care? I'm done with you. I've done everything that was asked of me, and all I have to show for it is a pack of ungrateful lizards. Go find your precious families. I don't care what happens to you. You're on your own now. No! Not a chance. Peril and her brother hatched over a year before you misbegotten worms. The prophecy speaks of five dragonets hatching together on the brightest night. Face it, your SkyWing died in the egg. I saw the broken shell and the murdered dragon who carried her. Tell me about those black rocks. More of Scarlet's lies. You don't need anything like that. Poison in your food. One of Scarlet's favourite tricks. Come with me. I'm not much, but I'm better than Scarlet. None of your bussiness. But I suppose, when you realize you need me, you can send me a message through the dragon of Jade Mountain. Not that I'll come running, mind you. You deserve all the trouble that's coming to you. Well, there's no surprises with you. Webs stole your egg from the SeaWing queen's own hatchery. Morrowseer brought us Starflight's egg. Dune found Sunny's egg in the desert, hidden near the Scorpion Den. And our big, strong hero came from somewhere around the Diamond Spray Delta, near the sea, where the lowest born MudWings crawl. I have no idea. Webs scrounged you up somewhere after we lost the SkyWing egg. I never cared where, because I knew you weren't important. Everything I say is true. I am the way life has made me. Take it or leave it. Because I'm going now, and you can come with me or not. 'Listen, MudWing. For all your noble talk, you're not going to be any use to the others if you can't fight and kill to defend them. Just think about that.
I failed you? I work for the Talons of Peace, not the NightWings. They can talk to me if they got complaints. I kept those brats alive, like I was supposed to.
