Bigwings are the eldest and largest dragonet in a MudWing clutch (a group of siblings). The are the first to hatch and help his/her younger siblings hatch (by cracking open the eggshells). When grown, they become leaders of sibling groups.
Clay is a bigwings in his clutch, as is Reed. If a group of siblings looses its bigwings, a lot of its clutch it will form a new group with other other MudWing dragonets, or unsubs.
