SkyWings, also known as mountain dragons, sky dragons, or fire dragons to humans, are a Pyrrhian dragon tribe residing in the mountains on the "wing" of Pyrrhia. They are currently ruled by Queen Ruby.

SkyWings are characterized most by their warm-toned scales and enormous wings, and most SkyWings have been noted to be skilled fliers. They are also one of the four tribes that can breathe fire, but are the one tribe exclusive to a rare and dangerous condition called firescales in which the affected dragon has abnormally hot scales and will burn through/and or light on fire anything they touch. However, it was mentioned in Darkstalker (Legends) that the SkyWing tribe, for centuries, has thrown any dragonet with dangerous powers off of a cliff to die, so the only known living firescales dragon is Peril (it was noted that at one time the SkyWings may have had animus dragons, but eventually they died out because of this). The majority of SkyWings reside in the "wing" of Pyrrhia, and prefer to live high up in mountain peaks, especially in the Claws of the Clouds. After killing Scarlet and obtaining the throne, Queen Ruby currently holds dominance over the SkyWing tribe.
The SkyWings were originally allied with Burn and later on, the MudWings during the War of SandWing Succession. This alliance was upheld by both Ex-Queen Scarlet and her daughter, Queen Ruby.TBN

The SkyWings were originally allied with Burn and later the MudWings in the War of the SandWing Succession, but it is unknown (and rather unlikely) if Queen Ruby continued the alliance with Burn after she took the throne; it is mentioned in The Lost Heir that Ruby wanted to rebuild her tribe rather than fight in the war alongside Burn.

Description
Most known SkyWings have stereotypically been portrayed as short-tempered, militaristic, anti-social, grumpy, mean, and fond of violence. Tsunami noted that the SkyWing soldiers in the palace looked underfed, under-rested, and uncontent,TLH while an unnamed MudWing in the Talons of Peace made a joke about how all SkyWings were either red and grumpy or orange and grumpy.EP
Typically, SkyWings have red, pink, orange, or golden scales with yellow, orange, or amber eyes. Their scales have been described to be "jewel-hard". Taking Peril as an example, it can be assumed that firescales SkyWings can have shockingly bright blue eyes and unnaturally bright copper scales. SkyWings have enormous wings, larger than any other tribes, attached to their bodies by their shoulder bones. It has been implied that SkyWings have a strong respiratory system, probably because of their constant high-altitude environment. Most SkyWing snouts are thin and long, with a nose-spike, and an extra horn on their jaw. Their horns are long, thin, and curved, which are similar to RainWing horns in shape. Most SkyWings are slender but very powerful.

Most known SkyWings have stereotypically been portrayed as short-tempered, militaristic, grumpy, and fond of violence, although these attributes may have been caused by Queen Scarlet's long and brutal reign. Clay noted in The Dragonet Prophecy that "the SkyWing soldiers looked underfed and they needed rest".

After Queen Ruby took over, SkyWings shown in Escaping Peril seemed considerably happier and less grouchy, as well as more focused on nonviolent hobbies and entertainment (i.e. orchestra) in comparison to previous books. The fact that the SkyWings were able to change their attitudes under Queen Ruby's rule may imply that they are adaptive, creative, not grumpy by nature, and clever.

Abilities
Firescales
SkyWings are well-known for their superior and refined skills in combat; many SkyWings have been shown or mentioned to be fairly physically strong. They can fly faster than any other dragon tribe because of their large wings and keels, and are also capable of breathing large amounts of fire at extreme temperatures. According to Tsunami in The Lost Heir, a SkyWing beating their wings at full force might sound like a "hurricane whistling around your ears."

A SkyWing dragonet in a twin egg may develop a condition known as firescales. This is when a dragon has "too much fire," causing their scales to be incredibly hot to the touch, and anything flammable to touch their scales will burn almost instantly. Dragons with firescales cannot burn flammable objects inside their mouth.EP Firescales are much hotter than the average dragon's fire,TDP and cannot be harmed by IceWing frostbreath.EP In addition, any rain that comes into contact with a firescales dragon will immediately evaporate into steam.EP Firescales may occur when one twin "sucks the fire" out of the other, leaving the non-firescales twin fireless and much sicklier.TDPL2 Due to the dangerous nature of this condition, SkyWing law demands the killing of dragonets hatched with firescales by dropping them off of tall mountains.TDP

In The Dark Secret, Flame was the only dragonet that wasn't breathing heavily after a long flight from the Night Kingdom to a remote outpost in the Sky Kingdom. This may indicate that SkyWings have more cardiovascular endurance and better muscle toning than the other dragon tribes, but it may also be because his larger wings allowed him to go further with more ease than his companions.
Firescales dragons are immune to frostbreath and are often difficult to injure due to weapons melting or burning before or on contact.EP Frostbreath causes temporary numbness to firescales dragons when they are hit.EP Hope states that she had not seen a firescales dragon in a long time,EP implying that there might have been a dragon with firescales in her time.

In rare cases, very few dragonets will be born with a dangerous condition called firescales, in which the affected dragon will be able to burn anything they touch with abnormally hot temperatures. In Peril's case, she had a twin who had no fire at all. Firescale SkyWings can be injured by sharp weapons, but it is rare that their scales won't burn or melt the item before it pierces them. Water and frostbreath have no effect on firescales SkyWings, although frostbreath has been noted to numb the affected area until the ice melts away. Firescale SkyWings cannot wear jewelry, hold ordinary items, touch normal, non-fire resistant dragons or sleep on anything flammable, as it will all be destroyed within seconds of contacting their scales. They can also make dragonflame cacti explode upon touching it. It is unknown if firescale SkyWings can cry, but it is likely that they cannot (at least without the water evaporating as soon as the tears are released).
Animus magic
SkyWings had animus magic during or prior to Darkstalker, but they would kill any animus dragonets because they are too "dangerous" to live just like firescales.L1 They had a test for all SkyWing dragons as soon as they are able to speak in order to test for animus magic. They would sit the SkyWing in front of a small fire and have them tell it to go out. If the fire went out, they would kill the dragonet.AGttDW They have not had an animus dragon in centuries.WT

At least once, a dragonet with too much fire had a twin with too little fire. These twins are presumably killed in the same way that their siblings are, probably because they would be too weak to survive. Many think that firescales dragons are the result of one dragonet twin sucking all the fire out of the other, hence the twin with too little fire. This theory has not been proven, but it is likely true.

It seems that once SkyWings did have animus dragons, but eventually killed them off by dropping them off a cliff as stated above.
Even in times of general peace, SkyWings still had minor skirmishes with IceWings and SandWings.W3q

SkyWings value excitement and, during Queen Scarlet's rule, gladiatorial combat, as shown with the popular appreciation of her SkyWing Arena. Even during Queen Scarlet's reign, SkyWings used justice and honor within their combat systems, an example being the Champion's Shield. Under Queen Scarlet's rulership, the SkyWings used many torture methods on misbehaving prisoners, once refusing Gill, the former king of the SeaWings, any water for months.

The tribe was in a state of political upheaval and civil war from Scarlet's disappearance from the Kingdom in The Lost Heir. SeaWing guards on patrol reported that they had seen a group of SkyWings fighting each other in defense of Queen Ruby and Queen Scarlet.

It is unknown if SkyWings engage in lifelong partnerships like SeaWings and IceWings, but it is unlikely because of a mentioned 'breeding program.' However, this could simply be a wartime custom to ensure the reproduction of highly capable soldiers. It was mentioned in Darkness of Dragons that SkyWings do practice weddings, although weddings may be exclusive only to royal marriages.

Dragonets have been shown to be raised in a Wingery. The Wingery is described as a place for young dragonets to grow and play, similar to a scavenger daycare. Most SkyWing mothers are shown to care very much for their dragonets, doing anything to protect them. Similar to many customs, Queen Scarlet is not included in this normality, saying she "never saw the appeal" to dragonets. She most likely had them only for heirs.
SkyWings have a traditional, ceremonial burial system, which consists of wrapping a deceased dragon's body in white cloth or silk and offering it to the sky for seven days before being burned. This allows the dragon's spirit to fly free, reincarnating into a SkyWing instead of a dragon from any other tribe.EP The ceremony may have been stopped during the war,TDP but it carried on in Ruby's rule.EP A cave near the peak of Jade Mountain is a notable location where SkyWings have held this ceremony.EP

SkyWings have a ceremonial burial system of wrapping the body in white cloth and setting it on a high altitude area for a week so that the spirit can fly into the sky and reincarnate into another SkyWing as opposed to another dragon tribe. Yet again, Queen Scarlet is said not to care for this custom, allowing it to happen to please her citizens but not particularly invested in it herself. The ceremony was possibly stopped temporarily during the war, as Clay saw SkyWings burning dragon corpses in a ditch in The Dragonet Prophecy. Though the SkyWings did watch over it for a second, they did nothing more and flew away, leaving the bodies to burn into nothing more than singed bones.
Before Queen Firestorm, there was an old tradition called the Clash of Claws Tournament that the SkyWings would hold every seven years. SkyWings from across the kingdom would come to the palace to compete in a weeklong competition to prove themselves to the queen, tribe, and kingdom. If they won, they were granted glory, fame, and a seat at the queen's table of advisors. There were seven challenges that were done over the seven days of the tournament.AGttDW

SkyWings have also been shown to have orchestras in the past, as Scarlet's death was celebrated by an orchestra.

Apparently, if a dragon were to get a certain amount of victories, they would be set free. However, under Scarlet's rule, prisoners were required to fight Peril just before reaching this tally. As almost nobody could touch her, she could claw and burn them as she wished. Because of this, nobody had been set free from Queen Scarlet's imprisonment.

SkyWings tend to name their young after sky or mountain-related environments and creatures, such as birds (Osprey), things occurring or features on mountains (Cliff), as well as natural sky phenomena (Princess Sunset), and since the SkyWings seem to be based on the element of fire, fire-related names (Flame), and minerals (Pyrite) and gems. The royal family seems to be an exception to this, with all of its shown members being named after shades of red or red gemstones, with Scarlet, Ruby, Tourmaline, and Vermilion being examples. However, exceptions include Garnet and Carnelian, who have gemstones as a name but are no more than soldiers. Peril probably got her name from how fierce she would be because of having too much fire and that her name means danger, as she herself defines danger.
SkyWings can be named after mountain-dwelling creatures or birds (such as Kestrel, Osprey, and Hawk), features of the landscape (such as Cliff, Canyon, and Sunset), gemstones or minerals (such as Ruby and Garnet), actions during flight (such as Tailwind and Soar), shades of red and orange (such as Vermilion and Scarlet), and generic fire-related words (such as Firestorm and Flame).

SkyWings, also known as mountain dragons, sky dragons, or fire dragons to humans, are a Pyrrhian dragon tribe residing in the mountains on the "wing" of Pyrrhia. They are currently ruled by Queen Ruby.

The SkyWings were originally allied with Burn and later on, the MudWings during the War of SandWing Succession. This alliance was upheld by both Ex-Queen Scarlet and her daughter, Queen Ruby.[1]

Description

A typical SkyWing egg from Escaping Peril (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes

SkyWings are based on traditional Western dragons.[event 1] They have red,[2] crimson,[3] orange,[4] yellow,[5] or rust-colored[6] scales. SkyWings typically have yellow,[7] orange,[8] or amber[9] eyes, though Peril and Sky are exceptions, due to their conditions.[10] SkyWing scales are "jewel-hard."[11] They also have the largest wings of any tribe,[event 2] and long, curved horns on their heads. Most SkyWing snouts are thin and long, with a nose-spike, and an extra horn on their jaw. SkyWing eggs are a translucent white when nearing their hatching day.[6]

Most known SkyWings have stereotypically been portrayed as short-tempered, militaristic, anti-social, grumpy, mean, and fond of violence. Tsunami noted that the SkyWing soldiers in the SkyWing palace looked underfed, under-rested, and uncontent,[12] while an unnamed MudWing in the Talons of Peace made a joke about how all SkyWings were either red and grumpy or orange and grumpy.[13]

Diet

SkyWings are shown to eat scavengers, mountain goats,[14] chicken, foxes, deer, bobcats, cows, pigs, sheep, and rodents.[15] They have been described to eat roasted seagulls.[16] SkyWings also grow their own crops.[17] Their diet is also noted to consist of cougars, squirrels, rabbits, and birds of prey.[14]

Abilities

SkyWings are the fastest fliers of any dragon tribe due to their enormous wings and endurance,[18] and they are built for flying longer distances because of their stamina.[19] SkyWing dragonets also learn to fly at a fairly young age.[20] They are capable of breathing fire and are considered powerful fighters.[21] They can see farther[22] and have better cold resistance than most tribes, excluding IceWings.[event 3]

According to Morrowseer, SkyWings, like NightWings, can hold their fire until it is at maximum temperature.[23]

Firescales

Peril using her firescales to protect Kestrel in The Dragonet Prophecy (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes

A SkyWing dragonet in a twin egg may develop a condition known as firescales. This is when a dragon has "too much fire," causing their scales to be incredibly hot to the touch, and anything flammable to touch their scales will burn almost instantly. Dragons with firescales cannot burn flammable objects inside their mouth.[24] Firescales are much hotter than the average dragon's fire,[25] and cannot be harmed by IceWing frostbreath.[26] In addition, any rain that comes into contact with a firescales dragon will immediately evaporate into steam.[27] Firescales may occur when one twin "sucks the fire" out of the other, leaving the non-firescales twin fireless and much sicklier.[28][29] Due to the dangerous nature of this condition, SkyWing law demands the killing of dragonets hatched with firescales by dropping them off of tall mountains.[28]

Firescales dragons are immune to frostbreath and are often difficult to injure due to weapons melting or burning before or on contact.[30] Frostbreath causes temporary numbness to firescales dragons when they are hit.[26] Hope states that she had not seen a firescales dragon in a long time,[31] implying that there might have been a dragon with firescales in her time.

SkyWings had animus magic during or prior to Darkstalker, but they would kill any animus dragonets because they are too "dangerous" to live just like firescales.[32] They had a test for all SkyWing dragons as soon as they are able to speak in order to test for animus magic. They would sit the SkyWing in front of a small fire and have them tell it to go out. If the fire went out, they would kill the dragonet.[33] They have not had an animus dragon in centuries.[34]

Society

SkyWings are regarded as grumpy and aggressive by other tribes; under Scarlet's rule, many citizens appeared thin and grumpy.[12] They seem to value entertainment a great deal, as they enjoyed gladiatorial combat in the SkyWing Arena during the war. SkyWings have orchestras who perform music during celebrations.[35] SkyWings dance, sing, and clap wings at parties.[36]

Even in times of general peace, SkyWings still had minor skirmishes with IceWings and SandWings.[37]

SkyWing do not tolerate dangerous differences in the Sky Kingdom.[9] As such, they killed their animus dragons[9] and firescales dragonets as soon as they were discovered.[38] SkyWings also kill dragons for having too little fire.[28]

Most SkyWing dragonets are raised in a wingery. The wingery is a place for young dragonets to grow and play.[39] As SkyWings learn flight early in their lives, the wingery contains a place for dragonets to practice flying, fighting, etc.[40]

A SkyWing engagement ring from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang

Most SkyWing families are fairly loose. Not all dragons seek partners, instead they may register themselves in a breeding program to be paired up by the queen. SkyWing weddings are quiet and involve the two dragons saying ritual words while flying with each other above the clouds and then registering themselves in an ancestry scroll. During Scarlet's reign, weddings involved fights in the arena.[41]

SkyWings have a traditional, ceremonial burial system, which consists of wrapping a deceased dragon's body in white cloth or silk and offering it to the sky for seven days before being burned. This allows the dragon's spirit to fly free, reincarnating into a SkyWing instead of a dragon from any other tribe.[42] The ceremony may have been stopped during the war,[43] but it carried on in Ruby's rule.[42] A cave near the peak of Jade Mountain is a notable location where SkyWings have held this ceremony.[44]

There were seven challenges that were done over the seven days of the tournament.[45]

List of the Clash of Claws challenges

Flame: Competitors compare intensity, precision, and heat of their fire.[45]

Endurance: Competitors fly to the tallest mountain in the kingdom to collect a token and race back to the palace to test their speed, stamina, and resistance to the cold.[45]

Strength: Competitors fly as high as possible while carrying a heavy boulder, then throw the boulder as far as they can.[45]

Cunning: Competitors go through elaborate mazes with secret rooms full of treasure that they must acquire while avoiding snares and other traps.[46]

Guile: Competitors race to find a scavenger and bring them back to the palace alive and unharmed.[46]

Wit: Competitors must correctly answer a series of riddles crafted by the queen and her advisors.[46]

Speed: Competitors fly in a race to determine who is the fastest in the tribe.[46]

Arena

The SkyWing arena from The Dragonet Prophecy (graphic novel), by Mike Holmes

The SkyWing Arena was originally used for parades, art shows, dance performances, and beauty contests before Queen Scarlet converted it into a gladiatorial arena where war prisoners would fight to the death for her entertainment.[47] SkyWings, MudWings, and SandWings all attended these events as an audience and would throw gemstones to the fighters.[48][49] The prisoners were chained to tall pillars, forming a ring around the arena, with their wings clamped and wires connecting them to one another.[50]

If a dragon reached a certain number of victories, they would be set free. No prisoners were actually released in accordance with this clause, as they would be sent to fight Peril, Ex-Queen Scarlet's "Champion" before reaching the necessary amount.[51]

After her ascension to the throne, Queen Ruby turned the arena into a hospital for all the dragons wounded in the War of the SandWing Succession.[52]

Names

SkyWings can be named after mountain-dwelling creatures or birds (such as Kestrel, Osprey, and Hawk), features of the landscape (such as Cliff, Canyon, and Sunset), gemstones or minerals (such as Ruby and Garnet), actions during flight (such as Tailwind and Soar), shades of red and orange (such as Vermilion and Scarlet), and generic fire-related words (such as Firestorm and Flame).

 • SkyWings were described as "the friendly tribe" in the era of Darkstalker by Fathom, though he may have been sarcastic.[54]
 • SkyWings make a particular hissing noise before breathing fire. This same hissing noise can be used as a threat of anger, as shown by Kestrel, or a respectful noise as shown by the spectators at Queen Scarlet's arena.[55]
 • Winter, when wearing the Pyrite mask, described SkyWings as "freer than any other tribe, more loyal to one another, and more independent."[56]
 • SkyWings prefer to live high among the peaks in their kingdom, instead of down lower.[57]
 • SkyWings are the only known tribe to believe in the concept of reincarnation.[citation needed]
