SilkWings
SilkWings are one of the three tribes that reside on Pantala, the other two tribes being HiveWings and LeafWings. The last SilkWing queen was Queen Monarch at the time of the Tree Wars, and the tribe was ruled by Queen Wasp after the Tree Wars until the epilogue of The Flames of Hope, where a group known as the Assembly took control. They currently reside within the Kingdom which they share with the LeafWings and some HiveWings. They are descended from the BeetleWings.
SilkWings were the first confirmed dragon tribe out of the four that live or lived on Pantala. The other three tribes are HiveWings, LeafWings, and BeetleWings. The dragon that appears on the cover of The Lost Continent is a SilkWing named Blue. The last SilkWing queen was Queen Monarch, and the tribe is currently ruled by Queen Wasp of the HiveWings. It is possible they are related to RainWings, because they have scales in every color excluding black, and they are descended from BeetleWings, which were rumored to have been able to shoot venom from their fangs.

SilkWings had been living in slavery ever since Queen Wasp took over their tribe. Under Wasp's rule, SilkWings are second class citizens and have very few rights compared to HiveWings. Examples of a regular SilkWing's occupation would include: construction workers, like Swordtail, hive drones (servants) like Silverspot, web workers, like Burnet, and other low-ranked jobs, like stall owners or weavers.

When Wasp took control of the tribe, SilkWings were separated from the HiveWings. They did not have a voice in the Hives' government system, and under Wasp's rule, SilkWings were second class citizens and servants who have almost no rights compared to HiveWings. They had strict rules they had to followAGttDW and their school curriculum was used to try and make them feel inferior, scare them away from leaving the Hives, and teach them things that were essential to their limited option of future professions.AGttDW They also practiced emergency drills to protect themselves in case a web was falling, if there was a LeafWing attack, or if they had to get to a Hive quickly for safety.TLC They also learned about silk weaving, web structure, the history of the Tree Wars, and especially following directions.TLC
SilkWings have two pairs of wings, one pair smaller than the other, with membranes that have rounded edges. While Pyrrhian dragons have bat-like wings, SilkWings have insect-like wings, which can be compared to butterfly wings in design and shape, as well as appearing to be translucent. Their wings also have spots on their inner membranes. The bigger pair of wings appears to have four or five digits that the membrane is stretched between. The smaller pair of wings attach in front of the larger pair, in the arm-pit area, and have two or three digits. According to Tui on the Wings of Fire Forums, SilkWings' wings are just as strong as any dragon's wings. SilkWings appear to have plated scales and have small spines running down their back, to the tip of their tail. Their scales appear to be somewhat iridescent, similar to NightWing scales. They have long and slim bodies, similar to RainWings. Their horns are curved, almost RainWing-like in shape, but much thinner. There is also a set of antennae on the brow, just above the eyes. The ridge above their eyes runs over their horns, giving SilkWings a plated appearance. A theory is that they are very closely related to the RainWings, due to their very close features to them.

SilkWings had no control over the job that was assigned to them as they were picked by the HiveWings because they thought that the SilkWings were "overly sensitive" and "prone to fits of fancy." Common professions included construction worker, web worker, spinners, weavers, servant workers, performers,AGttDW and other low-ranked jobs like stall owner. It has been mentioned that the most disobedient SilkWings were typically assigned construction work given that it is considered to be very unpleasant.TLC In some Hives, dragonets may be assigned to work as well.TFoH

SilkWings can be any color except black, such as olive green, aquamarine, lavender, indigo, amber, orange, dark purple, grey, and red. Most SilkWings seem to have iridescent scales. The wing membranes appear to be different colors too, as well as certain segments between the digits being a different color than the rest of the wing. Tui has said that the SilkWings could be named after different species of butterflies, and this has since been confirmed.
SilkWings were not allowed to divorce unless with Queen Wasp's approval,THQ and were assigned partners by Wasp and her sisters, rather than having an ability to choose their own.TLC Partners were assigned to SilkWings soon after their metamorphosis.TLC

Abilities
SilkWings were branded on their rightTDG palm at a very young age.TLC The SilkWing's initial on their palm is a big letter, while their parent's initials are smaller letters,TLC forming a triangle shape.TDG The SilkWing's initial is at the top, while the parents' are at the right and left bottom corners.
SilkWings that have undergone metamorphosis, which occurs at the age of six years, can fly and produce silk from their wrists. They can also use their antennae to sense vibrations in the air and, like the HiveWings, can predict the weather. A select few SilkWings can create a special type of silk known as "flamesilk." These SilkWings are referred to as "flamesilks", and can shoot various types of fiery silk from their wrists. One type emits a bright light and can burn through objects, which is used in the Hives to create glass and as a light source. Other types, as mentioned by Admiral, include sticky silk as well as solid silk, which is used for building the webs that they sleep on.

It is possible that they may also have NightWing powers buried deep down inside them, due to their distant relatives, the NightWings. Blue mentioned in the lost continent, that he always felt a constant tugging on his imagination to understand dragons perspectives on different things. He also mentioned that HiveWings and SilkWings, both relatives of Clearsight, had a precise internal clock. They could tell when the rainy season would come and what time of day it is, similar to NightWing predictions. It is unknown whether LeafWings have these abilities or not, however Sundew never mentioned having these abilities, so it is possible that just the HiveWings and SilkWings may have some faint NightWing powers
SilkWings were also cuffed at a young age. These bronze wrist cuffs had their school and other personal information inscribed on itTLC so they could be identified at checkpoints.TLC All cuffs could inject toxin into the wrist to make dragons lose consciousness in case of betrayal.TLC Bands could be cut off by using flamesilk.TLC

Flamesilks are also unable to be burned by flamesilk, although it is not known if they are immune to all fire or just flamesilk, though they do not gain this immunity until after metamorphosis. In The Hive Queen, Blue gave Cricket some special flamesilk for warmth that did not burn her scales. Luna, Admiral, Blue, and nine other SilkWings have this ability. Their names are: Danaid, Fritillary, Xenica, Pierid, Festoon, Clubtail, Whitespeck, and Heliconian.
After the events of The Flames of Hope, the SilkWings allied with the LeafWings to create the LeafSilk Kingdom. This kingdom is ruled by the SilkWing Assembly, a council of two hundred dragons.TFoH

SilkWings are usually named after different species of butterfly and moth, although a few have been named after species of dragonfly. They have also been known to be named after colors, like Blue and Orange. Since it was confirmed SilkWings were also based off of beetles and spiders, it is possible that some future SilkWing characters could be named after those species as well.
SilkWings are named after different species of butterfly, such as Blue or Swordtail, or different species of moth, such as Luna or Io.

* In A Guide to the Dragons of Pantala, SilkWings and LeafWings are depicted as having their wings stretched out back from their shoulders. This would be a very uncomfortable position to maintain when moving around on the ground, so it's plausible that these two tribes either fold their wings across their backs or hang them to the side like Pyrrhian Dragons do. The primary wings of a SilkWing are depicted as being surprisingly similar in basic structure to a bat's wing. However, there are still some major differences between the two, such as the fact that a SilkWing's wing digits are fused in a curved crescent, and the "index" and "middle" digits are fused together to create a thicker crescent. Despite these differences, a SilkWing is probably perfectly capable of folding their wings in a similar manner to the Pyrrhian dragons because they have a jointed appendage similar in structure. However, the secondary wings appear to be fused in a fixed shape and are unable to be maneuvered in a similar way to their primaries. They likely fold their primary wings over their secondary wings when on the ground.

SilkWings are one of the three tribes that reside on Pantala, the other two tribes being HiveWings and LeafWings. The last SilkWing queen was Queen Monarch at the time of the Tree Wars, and the tribe was ruled by Queen Wasp after the Tree Wars until the epilogue of The Flames of Hope, where a group known as the SilkWing Assembly took control. They currently reside within the LeafSilk Kingdom which they share with the LeafWings and some HiveWings. They are descended from the BeetleWings.

Description

Blue with wingbuds before his Metamorphosis from How to Draw, by Brianna C. Walsh (edited by WillowCharlotte1234)

SilkWings have scales like sliced gems[1] and small spines running down their back to the tip of their tails. Their scales appear to be somewhat iridescent, similar to NightWing scales. Like RainWings, they have slim bodies and curved horns that are almost identical in shape, but much longer and thinner. They have a pair of long, furling[1] antennae on the brow above the eyes. A ridge above their eyes runs over their horns, giving SilkWings a plated appearance.

SilkWings hatch without any wings. When they turn six years old, they undergo a Metamorphosis where they spin a cocoon and come out five days later with their wings. When they do this, they enter a trance-like state shortly before creating their cocoon.[2] SilkWings have two pairs of wings, one pair smaller than the other, with membranes that have rounded edges. SilkWings have butterfly-like wings, which appear similar to butterfly or moth wings in shape. Their wings also can have spots and other patterns on them. The bigger pair of wings appear to have four digits that the membrane is stretched between. The smaller pair of wings are attached slightly below the larger pair and have two digits. According to Tui on the Wings of Fire Forums, SilkWing wings are just as strong as any dragon's wings,[event 1] rather than weak like an insect's wings. In some cases, as shown on the back cover of The Lost Continent, SilkWings can have the "tail-streamers" that swallowtail butterflies do on their lower, smaller wings.

SilkWings can be any color under the sun except black, such as olive green, aquamarine,[3] lavender,[4] indigo,[5] amber, orange,[6] dark purple,[7] peach,[8] gray,[9] and red.[10] They sometimes have darker accent colors on their scales. The wing's membranes appear to be different colors too, as well as certain segments between the digits being a different color than the rest of the wings. Their eyes can be any color.[11]

Diet

Honey drops from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang

SilkWings are vegetarians.[12][13] Their diet includes yams, okra,[14] garbanzo beans,[15] kale, kumquats,[16] fruits, honey,[17] and persimmons.[18] They also enjoy honey drops,[19] nectar, chocolate,[20] and various candies.

Abilities

A tapestry made with silk from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang

SilkWings can use their antennae to sense vibrations in the air,[21] and are able to predict the weather and sense danger. At six years old, SilkWings undergo Metamorphosis. They enter a cocoon for about five days,[22] emerging with two pairs of wings and silk glands in their wrists. Metamorphosis is preceded by aching wing buds, experiencing a nervous and fuzzy feeling, and itchy or painful silk glands.[23] Swordtail notes that SilkWings are great climbers.[24] They have a precise internal clock to keep their days on schedule and warn them when the rainy season is coming.[25] This clock needs a little while to adjust when a SilkWing travels a long distance.[26]

Luna using flamesilk on the cover of The Flames of Hope, by Joy Ang

Some SilkWings have the ability to produce flamesilk. Flamesilk is used by the HiveWings to create glass and illuminate inside of the hives, though different types can be made for different purposes, including a type that emits heat and does not burn the holder. Flamesilk dragons cannot be burned by flamesilk,[27] but they are not immune to regular fire.[event 2] This ability is genetic, and if one parent is a flamesilk, their offspring have a fifty percent chance of being flamesilk as well.[28] Cricket notes that flamesilk is expensive, and that a single strand can last a whole moon cycle.[29]

According to Luna, there are five types of flamesilk.[30]

 1. Gold Silk: Gold Silk is just like regular silk, only it shimmers with a golden color. It does not glow or burn.
 2. Firefly Silk: Firefly Silk gives off a little bit of light, "like holding a firefly in your talons", but it does not burn.
 3. Glow Silk: Glow Silk feels a little warm and glows brighter, closer to normal fire, but it does not hurt.
 4. Blaze Silk: Blaze Silk can burn and hurt non-flamesilk dragons. Luna thinks that blaze silk is the kind found in most lanterns.[31]
 5. Sun Silk: It is extremely bright and so hot it can burn through stone. Luna says to put it out, you must drown it in water.[32] Luna can only make a little bit at a time. It will also burn non-flamesilks.

Pre-Tree Wars

Before the Tree Wars, SilkWings were tree dwellers who lived in the forests of Pantala.[11] It was common for SilkWings fresh out of the cocoon to take time off of school to explore the continent and decide on a job they wanted to do.[33] Flamesilks lived like normal dragons and traded their flamesilk, as it was very valuable to the Pantalan dragons who did not have fire.[34]

SilkWings queens used to pick their successors from their daughters.[35] The queen would meet with the HiveWing and LeafWing queens every few moons to smooth out disputes.[36]

Post-Tree Wars

When Wasp took control of the tribe, SilkWings were separated from the HiveWings. They did not have a voice in the Hives' government system, and under Wasp's rule, SilkWings were second class citizens and servants who have almost no rights compared to HiveWings. They had strict rules they had to follow[37] and their school curriculum was used to try and make them feel inferior, scare them away from leaving the Hives, and teach them things that were essential to their limited option of future professions.[38] They also practiced emergency drills to protect themselves in case a web was falling, if there was a LeafWing attack, or if they had to get to a Hive quickly for safety.[39] They also learned about silk weaving, web structure, the history of the Tree Wars, and especially following directions.[40]

SilkWings had no control over the job that was assigned to them as they were picked by the HiveWings because they thought that the SilkWings were "overly sensitive" and "prone to fits of fancy." Common professions included construction worker, web worker, spinners, weavers, servant workers, performers,[41] and other low-ranked jobs like stall owner. It has been mentioned that the most disobedient SilkWings were typically assigned construction work given that it is considered to be very unpleasant.[42] In some Hives, dragonets may be assigned to work as well.[43]

SilkWings were not allowed to divorce unless with Queen Wasp's approval,[44] and were assigned partners by Wasp and her sisters, rather than having an ability to choose their own.[45] Partners were assigned to SilkWings soon after their metamorphosis.[46]

SilkWings were branded on their right[47] palm at a very young age.[48] The SilkWing's initial on their palm is a big letter, while their parent's initials are smaller letters,[48] forming a triangle shape.[47] The SilkWing's initial is at the top, while the parents' are at the right and left bottom corners.

SilkWings were also cuffed at a young age. These bronze wrist cuffs had their school and other personal information inscribed on it[49] so they could be identified at checkpoints.[48] All cuffs could inject toxin into the wrist to make dragons lose consciousness in case of betrayal.[50] Bands could be cut off by using flamesilk.[49]

After the events of The Flames of Hope, the SilkWings allied with the LeafWings to create the LeafSilk Kingdom. This kingdom is ruled by the SilkWing Assembly, a council of two hundred dragons.[51]

Names

SilkWings are named after different species of butterfly, such as Blue or Swordtail, or different species of moth, such as Luna or Io.
