Since all Pantalan dragons seem to be based off wildlife on the continent, any dragon name should also reasonably be an organism living on the continent. It is also reasonable to assume that most, if not all, real-world flora and fauna exist on Pantala, as most recorded organisms line up with ones on Earth. (barring dragonbite vipers, breath of evil, etc.)

* Pantala is a genus of dragonfly, matching Pyrrhia, a genus of moth.
* The arrival of Clearsight had a significant effect on the dragons that lived there. The two main things she impacted were the language (she reintroduced the Dragon Language to Pantala) and religion (most dragons worship the [[Book of Clearsight]] and pray to Clearsight's spirit). She married a BeetleWing from Pantala named [[Sunstreak]].
* This is the second instance of dragons being shown having a religion (the first is when it was shown in ''[[Escaping Peril]]'' that [[SkyWings]] believe in reincarnation) which is dragons believing in an afterlife (they pray to Clearsight even though she has been dead for two thousand years).
* It is shown in ''Darkstalker'' that Pantala was known to dragons of Pyrrhia back then, but it appears that knowledge surrounding it has been lost over the centuries.
* Tui has confirmed that there is no animus magic on Pantala, due to its extreme prevalence in the second arc.
* The ''Legend of the Hive'', a scroll mentioned by Hope in ''Darkness of Dragons'', has to do with a plant native to Pantala.
* Pantala has biomes that we haven't seen on Pyrrhia, such as that of the grassland or savannah-like biome seen on ''The Lost Continent'' cover. It also reveals that zebras, wildebeest, and gazelle live on Pantala.
* The SilkWings and HiveWings having two pairs of wings may be a reference to Pantala's name coming from a genus of dragonflies.
* In Pantala, each Hive is ruled by one of Queen Wasp's sisters (Queen Wasp rules the [[Wasp Hive]], [[Lady Cicada]] rules the [[Cicada Hive]], etc). The only exception is [[Lady Jewel]] as she is Queen Wasp's cousin.

It is unknown if they are real scales or simply called scales. From a discussion between Blue and Luna about how they haven't gone to a certain shop because they don't have enough scales, it seems that scales are the only form of currency and that all scales might be worth the same amount, as opposed to having them different values, similar to real currency.
* Pantala appears to be much more technologically advanced than Pyrrhia, with books instead of scrolls, glass, greenhouses, large-scale architectural projects, track schools similar to colleges, plumbing, playgrounds and even ID bracelets that can inject dragons with toxins from a distance. In ''The Hive Queen'', it is mentioned that the dragons on Pantala make use of hydroponics, which is a type of hydroculture involving growing the plants in a solution made of water with minerals dissolved in it. Pantala, also known as the lost continent by the dragons of Pyrrhia, is one of the two known continents in the Wings of Fire series, the other being Pyrrhia. It takes several days of traveling from the west of Pyrrhia to get there. Its existence was hinted at occasionally, before being confirmed at the end of Darkness of Dragons. The Pantalan dragon tribes consist of the SilkWings, HiveWings, LeafWings, and the now-extinct BeetleWings.

Description

Pantala is a dragon-shaped continent that was formerly covered with forests,[event 1] but after the Tree Wars, now primarily consists of grasslands and savannas. Watering holes and rivers, which are often dry, are scattered throughout the continent.[event 2] Pantala has a rainy season[1] and dry season, with moderate to hot temperatures.[event 3] The continent is covered with tall grass[2] and there are occasional sinkholes underfoot.[3]

The most prominent landmarks of Pantala are the Hives, which function as connected cities that house most of the continent's SilkWings and HiveWings. Other landmarks include Lake Scorpion, Beetle Lake, Dragonfly Bay, and the Poison Jungle, which sits on the "head" of the continent. Within the Poison Jungle are the Snarling River and the Gullet River, rivers which run through the "neck" and the "mouth" of the continent.

Beetle Lake

Beetle Lake is a large lake located on the "wing" of Pantala, in the western region.

Dragonfly Bay

Dragonfly Bay is a bay located on the east coast of Pantala. During the reign of the first HiveWing queen, a kraken was there for one rainy season.[4]

Dragontail Peninsula

Dragontail Peninsula is a peninsula on the southeast end, or the "tail", of Pantala. The peninsula has some trees on it.[5]

Lake Scorpion

Lake Scorpion is a large, scorpion-shaped lake located on the "tail" of Pantala, the southern region. It is considered the largest lake on Dragontail Peninsula.[6] The SilkWings from Jewel Hive, along with Lady Jewel and Scarab intended to flee to the lake.[7]

The abyss

The abyss is a pit located underneath Lake Scorpion, which housed the othermind's brain. It was described as having something glowing and green within it, and as acting strangely "for the first time in years" ever since the othermind escaped the Poison Jungle. Whispers have been heard coming from it, reaching the upper caves of Raven's village.[8] Inside the abyss there is a throne room, where the corpses of Freedom and Cottonmouth used to sit before they were defeated by Luna.

The Hives

The nine Hives are cities[9][10] inhabited by HiveWings and SilkWings, with Wasp Hive being the largest and oldest.[11] The Hives are made out of a paper-thin material called treestuff, which is a particular mixture of wood pulp, clay, and silk that allows light to filter through while being as solid as rock.[12] The Hives are spread out in a wide circle across the continent, with silk bridges connecting them.[9] Each Hive was once ruled by one of Wasp's female relatives, such as Lady Jewel and Lady Bloodworm, before Wasp and all of her sisters were imprisoned.

The Poison Jungle

The Poison Jungle was the last remaining forest on Pantala after the Tree Wars. It was said to be full of dangerous plants and wildlife, which was why the forest was left alone by the Queen Wasp and the HiveWings. Various dangerous plants were described to be in the jungle, such as sundews, venus dragon-traps, cobra lilies, waterwheels, and the quarantined othermind.[13] Further in the jungle are the homes of both LeafWing factions, the PoisonWings and the SapWings. The jungle was destroyed by the end of The Poison Jungle when the breath of evil manipulated Blue into burning it down with flamesilk.

The sinkhole

The sinkhole is a pit located in the middle of the savanna, between the Hives. It was the place where Blue, Cricket, and Swordtail hid from HiveWings during the day while traveling to Wasp Hive. A human settlement may have been located there as a human was spotted reading a book within the caves.

  • There is no animus magic on Pantala, due to its extreme prevalence in the second arc.[event 4]
  • SilkWings and HiveWings that lived in the Hives were told that the peninsulas of Pantala were too dangerous for dragons,[132] but it may have been a lie to dissuade dragons from leaving the Hives and dwelling elsewhere in Pantala.
  • The Hives are based on the Supertrees found in the nature park Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.[event 5]
