Moonwatcher, preferring the nickname "Moon", is a female NightWing dragonet and the main protagonist of Moon Rising. Raised in the Rainforest Kingdom by Secretkeeper until the age of four, Moonwatcher was born under two full moons, granting her true prophetic and mind-reading abilities that the NightWings had lacked for nearly a century. She currently attends Jade Mountain Academy as a member of the Jade Winglet and is in a relationship with Qibli.

Moon Rising
Description
After laying Morrowseer's egg, Secretkeeper hid it in the rainforest in order to protect it from the volcano and the harsh living conditions of the NightWing Island. Moonwatcher then hatched under two full moons, thus giving her the powers of mind-reading and future sight.
Moonwatcher is small,EP with cool,DoD smooth, shinyWT purplish-black scales that are imbued with hints of dark blue and green.WT She has one glittering silver scale on the outside corner of each of her dark green eyes,THQe like a teardrop about to fall.MRp These scales are bigger and shinier than Fatespeaker's. She has powerful muscles,DoD black wings,EP and frequently has small furrows crossing her forehead, as though she has a perpetual headache.EP Secretkeeper describes her scales as "gleaming as though they'd been polished" and thought that she looked healthier than the NightWings who were raised on the volcano.MRp

Four years later, Moonwatcher and Secretkeeper are shown sitting together near Jade Mountain Academy, watching the other students arrive. As Queen Coral, Turtle, Anemone and Auklet land, Moonwatcher first notices that she cannot read Turtle's mind and only hears a quiet fuzz instead of thoughts, which confuses her. She then receives a vision of Turtle pinning Anemone down on a beach.
Personality
Moonwatcher is nervousEP and anxious,EP but simultaneously kind, firm,DoD brave,DoD determined,DoD loyal, and friendly. She is easily flustered,TDG sometimes reluctant,TDG and she thinks that there are a lot of things wrong with her.TFoH During the events of Moon Rising, Moonwatcher often found herself stammering when trying to talk,MR and her mindreading and foresight made it difficult for her to communicate with others.MR She suffers from social anxiety and is easily frightened by loud, overwhelming, and hectic situations.MR She often tried to avoid being around others by reading scrolls to calm herself down.Cite Moonwatcher was worried about what others would think of her, and she did not open up to her peers very easily; however, she still looked for the good in dragons.WT Moonwatcher eventually learned to be more open about her powers and chose to use them for the good of other dragons instead of hiding them,MR although, she still struggles to tell others about her mind reading.

After Queen Coral and her dragonets enter the Academy, Secretkeeper bids Moonwatcher goodbye. Moonwatcher briefly stays where she is, but eventually approaches the Great Hall, where she is greeted by Fatespeaker. After receiving her welcome scroll and a map, Moonwatcher walks to her sleeping cave, where she begins looking through scrolls provided by the Academy. As Moonwatcher undergoes a headache from an external conflict between Carnelian and Pike, she is spoken to by a mysterious telepathic voice, which disappears shortly after speaking to her.
According to Luna, she is kind of "spacey" at weird moments.TFoH She has a sort of distracted air to her, as though "invisible dragons whisper in her ears while everyone else is talking".TDG Moon is generally well-liked by others,DoD and according to Qibli, she is fascinating.DoD

Clay then separates the arguing dragonets, and Moonwatcher realizes that Carnelian is one of her clawmates as she storms into their cave. Shortly afterward, she is greeted by Kinkajou, her second clawmate, who invites her to the school library.

|content = After laying Morrowseer's egg, Secretkeeper hid the egg in the rainforest to protect it from the volcano and the harsh living conditions of the island. As hatching under one or more full moons gives NightWings their powers, and NightWings not having those powers in thousands of years, Secretkeeper was shocked to see her egg had turned silver. Moonwatcher then hatched under two full moons, thus giving her the powers of mind-reading and foresight.

After speaking with the librarian, Starflight, Moonwatcher receives a library stamp and a soft black leather pouch to carry it in. She and Kinkajou then meet Sora, who continues to read while Moonwatcher and Kinkajou visit the prey center. After meeting Kinkajou's friend Coconut, Moonwatcher rescues a terrified scavenger named Bandit from several dragonets who were presumably trying to catch and eat him. She is confronted by Winter, who threatens to slice her face off if she didn't return his pet. However, he is quelled by Qibli, who attempts to negotiate with Moonwatcher before realizing that she doesn't want to eat Bandit. Sunny and Clay then intervene, and Moonwatcher returns to her sleeping cave where she spends the rest of the day, eager to avoid conversation about their interaction.
Four years later, Moonwatcher and Secretkeeper sat together near Jade Mountain Academy, watching the other students arrive. They saw Queen Coral, Turtle, Anemone and Auklet arrive, while Tsunami greeted them happily. Moonwatcher first noticed that she could not read Turtle's mind. She could only hear a strange hum instead of thoughts, which confused her. She then received a vision of Turtle pinning Anemone down on a beach.

That night, Moonwatcher experiences a dream of Jade Mountain collapsing. Her mystery friend helps her out of the nightmare, and after asking her how many years since the Scorching, he abruptly disappears from her mind. Puzzled, Moonwatcher decides to visit Stonemover with intentions of finding her mystery companion in the flesh. After realizing that Stonemover is instead an animus dragon, however, she returns to her sleeping cave. There, she overhears Queen Scarlet and Icicle planning a murder through a dreamvisitor.
After Queen Coral and her dragonets entered the academy, Secretkeeper said goodbye to Moonwatcher. Moonwatcher briefly stayed where she was but eventually approached the Great Hall, where Fatespeaker greeted her. After receiving her welcome scroll and a map, Moonwatcher walked to her sleeping cave, where she began looking through scrolls provided by the Academy. After Moonwatcher received a headache from a conflict between Carnelian and Pike, she was confronted by a mysterious telepathic voice, which disappeared shortly after talking to her.

The following morning, Moonwatcher and her clawmates enter Tsunami's meeting cave, where they meet Umber and realize that Winter and Qibli have been placed into the Jade Winglet after their interaction the previous day. After an uncomfortable discussion about NIghtWing powers, Tsunami launches a hunting party and abruptly flies into the clouds, her students following more slowly. After catching a mountain goat, Moonwatcher follows the others to the prey center to eat. During the flight back, her mystery friend briefly teaches her how to slip other dragons' thoughts into the back of her mind, and she then shares her goat with Qibli, Umber, and Sora while Kinkajou and Coconut share fruit; Winter sits away from their group with Icicle.
Clay then separated the arguing dragonets, and Moonwatcher realized that Carnelian was one of her clawmates as she stormed into their cave. Shortly afterwards, she was greeted by Kinkajou, her second clawmate, who invited her to the school library.

Moonwatcher and Qibli then discuss Qibli's family, and although he believes that he'll never have to see them again, Moonwatcher has a vision of three bigger SandWings sneering down at Qibli as he shouts "Where is she?" at them. After her vision fades, Qibli appears concerned and thinks about offering Moonwatcher swordleaf root for her "headaches," but she insists that she's alright.
After speaking with the blind librarian, Starflight, Moonwatcher received a library stamp and a soft black leather pouch to carry it in. She and Kinkajou then met Sora, who continued to read while Moonwatcher and Kinkajou visited the prey center. After meeting Kinkajou's friend, Coconut, Moonwatcher rescued a terrified scavenger named Bandit from several dragonets who were trying to catch and eat him. She was confronted by Prince Winter, who threatened to slice her face off if she did not return his pet. However, he was quelled by Qibli, who attempted to negotiate with Moonwatcher, asking her to choose different food, before realizing that she did not want to eat Bandit. Sunny and Clay then intervened, and Moonwatcher returned to her sleeping cave, where she spent the rest of the day, eager to avoid conversation about their interaction.

After eating, Moonwatcher and Sora return to the library, where Sora begins reading a scroll regarding IceWings. Moonwatcher, after asking Starflight for a scroll concerning animus-touched objects, receives one titled The Animus Histories. After reading about the Summer Palace, the Royal SeaWing Massacre, dreamvisitors and Darkstalker, her mystery friend instructs her to read the section on Fathom, revealing himself to be Darkstalker soon afterwards.
That night, Moonwatcher had a nightmare about Jade Mountain collapsing. Her mystery friend helped her out of the nightmare, but after asking her what year it was, he abruptly disappeared from her mind. Puzzled, Moonwatcher decided to visit Stonemover with intentions of finding her mystery companion in the scales. After realizing that Stonemover had no telepathic powers, she returned back to her sleeping cave. There, she overheard Ex-Queen Scarlet and Icicle planning a murder through a dreamvisitor.

After Kinkajou warns Moonwatcher and Sora that history class is starting soon, one of the students alerts the Academy that "Queen Scarlet", who is revealed soon afterwards to actually be Peril, has invaded Jade Mountain. Clay, upon seeing Peril, invites her to stay, and Moonwatcher, Kinkajou, Winter, and Icicle then head to history class. Kinkajou introduces Moonwatcher to Tamarin, and Tamarin then introduces Onyx, her clawmate, to Moonwatcher and Kinkajou. Moonwatcher realizes that, like Turtle, Onyx's mind is impossible to read, even to Darkstalker. Webs, the history teacher, then begins his lesson with the intention of teaching about the Scorching, but he is soon overwhelmed by questions unrelated to the topic. Moonwatcher, barely listening to Webs's lecture, converses with Darkstalker, and he eventually convinces her to at least consider the possibility of freeing him.
The following morning, Moonwatcher and her clawmates entered Tsunami's meeting cave to introduce themselves to each other. They were told that Winter and Qibli had been placed into the Jade Winglet after their interaction the previous day. After their introductions and an uncomfortable discussion about NightWing powers, Tsunami launched a hunting party and abruptly flew away, leaving her students behind. For a while, Winter and Carnelian tried to threaten Moon into telling them more about NightWing powers, while Qibli and Kinkajou defended her. They joined the hunting group after Tsunami called to them again. After catching a mountain goat, Moonwatcher followed the others to the prey center to eat. During the flight back, her mystery friend briefly taught her how to slip other dragons' thoughts into the back of her mind by thinking of raindrops. She then shared her goat with Qibli, Umber, and Sora while Kinkajou and Coconut shared fruit; Winter sat away from their group with Icicle.

Later, during Kinkajou's suntime, Moonwatcher explores the school's tunnels and eventually approaches Mightyclaws, who is busy painting the NightWing Island in the art cave alone. Moonwatcher, taking a canvas, brushes, and a few shades of paint, begins talking to him about NightWing powers and about Darkstalker. Mightyclaws, upon hearing Darkstalker's name, reacts negatively, although he does answer her questions about him. He then storms out of the cave upon seeing Moonwatcher's painting, which depicts a badly-done rainforest, and snarls that the painting - in other words, Moonwatcher never having to live on the Island - is why she'd never be a true NightWing.
Moonwatcher and Qibli then discussed Qibli's family, and although he believed that he will never have to see them again, Moonwatcher had a vision of three bigger SandWings sneering down at Qibli as he shouted "Where is she?" at them. After her vision faded, Qibli appeared concerned and thought about offering Moonwatcher swordleaf root for her headaches, but she insisted that she was okay.

The next day, Moonwatcher attends her first music class with her winglet, playing a mbira. Afterwards, on her way to the library, Winter approaches her to ask for help with Bandit. Although Moonwatcher tries to give Winter advice on how to help his pet, he eventually storms out of the library in frustration. Halfway down the tunnel to her next class, history, she is hit by an awful vision of the history cave exploding in flame, killing her friends. Although Darkstalker advises her to stay away, she hurries toward the history cave, and although managing to stop most of the other dragonets from entering, Carnelian ignores Moonwatcher's warning and goes to class anyways.
After eating, Moonwatcher and Sora returned to the library, where Sora began reading a scroll regarding IceWings. Moon thought that her mystery friend might be using dreamvisitors to communicate telepathically with her, instead of having true mind-reading powers. After asking Starflight for a scroll concerning animus-touched objects, Moonwatcher received one titled The Animus Histories. After reading about the Summer Palace, the Royal SeaWing Massacre, dreamvisitors, and Darkstalker, her mystery friend instructed her to read the section on Fathom, revealing himself to be Darkstalker soon afterward.

The classroom then explodes. While Darkstalker calms her down, Moonwatcher's physical friends try to help her away from the smoke while Umber runs to get help. Peril and Clay then enter the cave, dragging out Carnelian, Tamarin, and Bigtail. Carnelian and Bigtail are confirmed dead, and Tamarin is alive but badly injured, taken away to the underground lake and then to the infirmary by Onyx, Clay, and Pike. Winter, dragging Moonwatcher away from the fire, asks how she knew about the explosion. After Winter leaves, warning her to tell him how she knew by the next midnight, Moonwatcher confesses her mind-reading and visionary powers to the rest of her dismayed friends.
After Kinkajou warned Moonwatcher and Sora that history class was starting soon, one of the students alerted the academy that "Queen Scarlet" had invaded Jade Mountain. They quickly realized that it was not Scarlet, but was actually Peril. Upon seeing Peril, Clay invited her to stay, and Moonwatcher, Kinkajou, Winter, and Icicle then headed to history class. Kinkajou introduced Moonwatcher to Tamarin, and Tamarin then introduced Onyx, her clawmate, to Moonwatcher and Kinkajou. Moonwatcher realized that, like Turtle, Onyx's mind was impossible to read, even to Darkstalker. Webs, the history teacher, then began his lesson to teach about the Scorching, but he was soon overwhelmed by questions unrelated to the topic. Moonwatcher, barely listening to Webs's lecture, conversed with Darkstalker, and he eventually convinced her to at least consider the possibility of freeing him.

The only dragon who doesn't seem horrified by this is Turtle, who invites her to a large underground lake, where he pulls out a dragonflame cactus seed from her shoulder. Moonwatcher begins to fly above the water, contemplating whether or not to flee the Academy. Presumably deciding to stay, she lands on a boulder near Turtle. He suggests Moonwatcher using her mind-reading abilities to catch the arsonist, and she agrees. On their way back, they meet Tsunami and Sunny, who assure Moonwatcher and Turtle that they're trying their best to catch the dragon who caused the explosion.
Later, during Kinkajou's suntime, Moonwatcher explored the school's tunnels and eventually approached Mightyclaws, who was busy painting the NightWing island in the art cave alone. Moonwatcher, taking a canvas, brushes, and a few shades of blue and green paint, began talking to him about NightWing powers and Darkstalker. Upon hearing Darkstalker's name, Mightyclaws reacted negatively, although he did answer her questions about him. He then stormed out of the cave upon seeing Moonwatcher's painting, which depicted a badly-done rainforest, and snarled that the painting — in other words, Moonwatcher never having to live on the island — was why she would never be a true NightWing.

The next morning, Qibli approaches Moonwatcher, offering to help her find the arsonist. They start by attending an assembly in which Sunny and Clay ask the students that they give the staff two days before leaving to find the killer, followed by a speech from Starflight concerning physiological trauma. Moon watcher then listens to Pike, Icicle, and Flame's minds, but none think about the explosion like they were the one who caused it. While Darkstalker tries to help Moonwatcher out of Flame's angry thoughts, she is thrown out of his mind by Flame himself, who noticed an uninvited presence in his brain.
The next day, Moonwatcher attended her first music class with her winglet, playing a mbira. Afterward, on her way to the library, Winter approached her to ask for help with Bandit. Although Moonwatcher tried to give Winter advice on helping his pet, he eventually stormed out of the library in frustration. Halfway down the tunnel to her next class, history, she was hit by an awful vision of the history cave exploding in fire, killing her friends. Although Darkstalker advised her to stay away, she hurried toward the history cave. Although managing to stop most of the other dragonets from entering, Carnelian ignored Moonwatcher's warning and went to class anyway.

When they go to the prey center, unexpectedly a stalactite falls where Icicle and Winter are sitting, nearly impaling Icicle. There were visible claw marks along the base of the stalactite, and that was when Icicle suspected Sora as the arsonist and of trying to murder her. Moon, reading Icicle's mind, rushed to save the little MudWing before Icicle could have her vengeance. They found Sora in the infirmary, apologizing to Tamarin. Sora, who was visibly crying, explained that Icicle was the one who had killed her sister, Crane, in a battle between the IceWings and the MudWings. Distraught, Moon let Sora escape into Pyrrhia with her brother Umber so that she wouldn't lose her life to Icicle.
When the classroom exploded, Darkstalker tried to calm her down. Moonwatcher's physical friends try to help her get away from the smoke while Umber ran to get help. Peril and Clay then entered the cave, dragging out Carnelian, Tamarin, and Bigtail. Carnelian and Bigtail were confirmed to be dead, and Tamarin was alive but badly injured, taken away to the underground lake, and then to the infirmary by Onyx, Clay, and Pike. Winter, dragging Moonwatcher away from the fire, asked how she knew about the explosion. After Winter left, warning her to tell him how she knew by the next midnight, Moonwatcher confessed her mind-reading and visionary powers to the rest of her dismayed friends.

Moon, Qibli, and Winter then found Icicle creeping toward Starflight with the intention to kill him on behalf of Ex-Queen Scarlet to free her older brother, Prince Hailstorm, from her SkyWing prison. With the help of Qibli and Winter , Moon was able to stop her and save Starflight. Icicle, however, escaped out of a leaf window; Qibli suspected that she had gone in search of Queen Glory with the intention to kill her, since Icicle might have thought that Scarlet might forgive her if she killed the dragonet she hated the most.
The only dragon who did not seem horrified by this was Turtle, who invited her to a large underground lake, where he pulled out a dragonflame cactus seed from her shoulder, which was stuck there by the explosion. Moonwatcher began to fly above the water, contemplating whether or not to flee the Academy. Presumably deciding to stay, she landed on a boulder near Turtle. He suggested that she should use her mind-reading abilities to catch the arsonist, and she agreed. On their way back, they meet Tsunami and Sunny, who assured Moonwatcher and Turtle that they were trying their best to catch the dragon that caused the explosion.

As they make plans to go in search of her, they discover that Winter has left Jade Mountain, taking Bandit and his cage with him. After they found Winter in the pouring rain, the Jade Winglet (with the exception of Turtle), went with Winter to help him find Icicle. After Moon confessed her powers to Winter, she delivered The Jade Mountain Prophecy.
The next morning, Qibli approached Moonwatcher, offering to help her find the arsonist. They attended an assembly in which Sunny and Clay asked the students to give the staff two days before leaving to find the killer, followed by a speech from Starflight concerning physiological trauma. Moonwatcher then listened to Pike, Icicle, and Flame's minds, but none of the suspects thought about the explosion like they were the ones who caused it. While Darkstalker tried to help Moonwatcher out of Flame's angry thoughts, she was thrown out of his mind by Flame himself, who noticed the uninvited presence in his brain.

Winter Turning
When they went to the prey center, unexpectedly, a stalactite fell where Icicle and Winter were sitting, nearly impaling Icicle. There were visible claw marks along the base of the stalactite, and that was when Icicle suspected Sora as the arsonist and of trying to murder her. Moonwatcher, reading Icicle's mind, rushed to save the little MudWing before Icicle could have her vengeance. They found Sora in the infirmary, apologizing to Tamarin. Sora, who was visibly crying, explained that Icicle was the one who had killed her sister, Crane, in a battle between the IceWings and MudWings during the War of SandWing Succession. Distraught, Moon let Sora escape into Pyrrhia with her brother Umber so that she would not lose her life to Icicle.
After arguing with the other dragonets, Winter begrudgingly allowed them to help him after Turtle returned to Jade Mountain to tell everyone where the rest of the Jade Winglet had gone. After setting Bandit free in the pouring rain, he traveled to the rainforest with Moon, Qibli, and Kinkajou.

Once they had arrived, Moon offered Winter some fruit and started to discuss her childhood. Moon's mind was interrupted by a NightWing named Obsidian, who had "dark thoughts." Arriving with Bromeliad, he nastily told them that rain forest visitors had to be permitted; as Kinkajou objected, Moon calmed her down by saying that going to the NightWing village would give her a chance to see her mother.
Moonwatcher, Qibli, and Winter then found Icicle creeping toward Starflight to kill him on behalf of Ex-Queen Scarlet to free her older brother, Hailstorm, from her SkyWing prison. With the help of Qibli and Winter, Moonwatcher was able to stop her and save Starflight. However, Icicle escaped out of a leaf window; Qibli suspected that she had gone in search of Queen Glory to kill her since Icicle might have thought that Scarlet might forgive her if she killed the dragonet she hated the most.

Glory sends them to be with the dragonets hatchery of the tribe so the guards could watch them, but they end up escaping regardless. They do this by having Kinkajou tell the dragonets in the wingery to count to 1000, but then remembers they can't count, which gives them a narrower window of time. Winter uses his frost breath to make a hole, in which they all fly out of. They then find their way to the portal to the Island. When they get there, Moon doesn't think this is where the prophecy mentions as the 'Lost City of Night'. They find Icicle who has been awake for days to keep Scarlet from visiting her in her dreams. Kinkajou has left a trail for Queen Glory who finds them, tranquilizes Icicle, and orders them back to the kingdom.
As they made plans to search for her, they discover that Winter had left Jade Mountain, taking Bandit and his cage with him. After they found Winter in the pouring rain, the Jade Winglet decided to go with Winter to find Icicle. Moon later delivered the Jade Mountain Prophecy and Darkstalker showed her a possible good future of the academy. Moon then confessed her powers to Winter, giving him a skyfire stone to shield his thoughts.

|content = Winter was outside Jade Mountain Academy, trying to convince Bandit to leave, when the rest of his winglet arrived, including Moon. She delivered the Jade Mountain Prophecy in the middle of their conversation, then after Winter questioned what that was, Moon told Turtle to give him a skyfire rock. She then explained that she had both NightWing powers: mind reading and foresight. After arguing with the other dragonets, Winter finally allowed them to help him after Turtle returned to Jade Mountain to tell everyone where the rest of the Jade Winglet had gone. After setting Bandit free in the pouring rain, he traveled to the rainforest with Moon, Qibli, and Kinkajou.

But Moon and the others aren't about to give up that easily. They find themselves soon traveling across the mountains to the Sky Kingdom, searching for a mountain where they believe Ex-queen Scarlet to be hiding, where they hope to find Hailstorm, Winter's older brother.
Once they had arrived, Moon offered Winter some fruit and started to discuss her childhood. Moon's mind was interrupted by a NightWing named Obsidian, who (according to Moon) had "dark thoughts." Arriving with Bromeliad, he nastily told them that rainforest visitors had to be permitted; as Kinkajou objected, Moon calmed her down by saying that going to the village would give her a chance to see her mother.

They go to the Talons of Peace, trying to find a SkyWing who can help them. Then comes Pyrite. Pyrite is a nervous, simple-minded, and unusually odd SkyWing, who is loyal to Scarlet. She is described to have bright orange scales and amber eyes, with a pouch that carries a spell that makes her Pyrite and not Hailstorm. No one in the group thinks it's a good idea to bring her, but are left with no other options. Pyrite becomes their guide. But this anxious little SkyWing is to be suspected on.
At the NightWing village, Moon reunited with her mother and talked for a few moments, before Winter was attacked by Deathbringer, which she protested to. When Queen Glory's scouts were reporting, Moon read their minds and asked if any of them had seen anything unusual, not just an IceWing. Winter later chose Moon to come with him to the place near the biggest banyan tree. Once arriving, she let Winter know that she could not detect Icicle's mind anywhere nearby. Upon finding a NightWing's dead body, Glory sent them to the tribe's hatchery so that the guards could watch them, but they ended up escaping regardless. This was accomplished when Kinkajou told the dragonets in the wingery to count to one-thousand but then remembered they could not count, which gave them a narrower window of time. Winter used his frostbreath to make a hole, which they all flew out of. They then found their way to the tunnel to the NightWing island. When they got there, Moon did not think this was what the prophecy meant by the 'Lost City of Night.' They found Icicle, who had been awake for days, to keep Scarlet from visiting her in her dreams. Kinkajou had left a trail for Queen Glory, who found them, tranquilized Icicle, saved Kinkajou in the process, and ordered them all back to the Rainforest Kingdom.

Eventually, the Jade Winglet finds Winter's brother, who is actually Pyrite, but was transformed by Chameleon. But, there was an unexpected encounter, in which Kinkajou is horribly injured by a mysterious NightWing (who was actually Chameleon) by being thrown against a tree. Then the group flies toward a unique little city, and they go to a doctor in the town of Possibility. They do find a doctor, a MudWing named Mayfly, and she tells the Jade Winglet that Kinkajou's wounds are near fatal. Winter decides to take his brother back to the Ice Kingdom. He claims that he won't come back. Qibli and Moon say they will wait at Possibility for four days in case he changes his mind. Throughout his entire time in the Ice Kingdom, Winter thinks of Moon, and near the end, because he lost the Diamond Trials and Hailstorm didn't want to kill Winter, he plans on returning. To help stop the prophecy, and tell Moon exactly how he feels for her.
Moon read Icicle's mind while she was dreamvisited by Scarlet. She saw mountains in the background when Scarlet's real location was revealed. She drew a picture of them, and Deathbringer told them they should ask the Talons of Peace. They then went to the Sky Kingdom to find them.

Escaping Peril
They went to the Talons of Peace, trying to find a SkyWing who could help them. There, Moon showed the only SkyWings there, Avalanche and Pyrite, a sketch of the mountains that she had seen when Scarlet dreamvisited sleeping Icicle. Pyrite was a nervous, simple-minded, and unusual SkyWing, who was very loyal to Ex-Queen Scarlet. No one in the group thought it was a good idea to bring her, but they were left with no other options. Thus, Pyrite became their guide to finding Scarlet. Moonwatcher said she felt sorry for Pyrite, she also said it was almost like her thoughts were looping, stuck in perpetuity.
In Escaping Peril, Moon tells Peril that Qibli probably has thought of five ways to defeat Peril, although he only thought of three. Then, she tells Peril that she is a mind reader. Moon and Qibli await Winter, though they have doubts that he will show up. Once Moon finds Winter, he is severely burned because of an accident with Peril, and tells him not to die. Turtle reveals his animus magic by healing Winter with his river rock he enchanted to heal surface wounds. Moon is shocked to hear this.
After Peril comes back from the Sky Palace, Turtle tells Moon about the scroll.
The morning after that, she leaves without the others. She is carrying the scroll to release Darkstalker. When Peril finds her, she is crying because of what he did to Prince Arctic. He enchanted him to do whatever he says, and apparently he told him to disembowel himself.

Talons of Power
When they were camping for the night, Qibli told Moon and Kinkajou the story of the night the War of SandWing Succession ended. When Winter took watch that night, he woke Moon up and told her that he thought Pyrite was an animus.
Moon is first seen talking with Darkstalker when he came out of the ground. When she notices that Winter, first arguing with Darkstalker, is now acting friendly and more open, she tells him to not enchant her friends. He denies that he did anything to Winter. When they tell him they all should go hunting, she tells Turtle to go warn the school. Turtle does so, only to intrigue Anemone to meet Darkstalker. When they arrive after hunting, Darkstalker mentions seeing timelines with both of them, most likely referring to Winter and Qibli, where she responds by covering her ears and denying everything. Anemone sets off a lightning storm with a copper bracelet she enchanted to do so. Darkstalker asks if there are any scrolls about Fathom and Clearsight.

Flame comes to them, only to have the horrid scar on his face healed. Darkstalker also enchants a bracelet on Mindreader to give her mind reading abilities, Mightyclaws' earring to give him the power to have anything he draws to come to life, and a makeshift bracelet for Fearless to give her super strength. Moon seems worried about him giving out these free powers. Then, Moonwatcher has a vision of someone being attacked and brings Sunny and the others to Stonemover, who is very close to dying.
Eventually, the Jade Winglet found Winter's brother, actually Pyrite. Unfortunately, there was an unexpected encounter, in which Kinkajou was injured by a mysterious NightWing (who was Chameleon, as Shapeshifter) when she was violently thrown against a tree. Then, the group flew toward Possibility, where they found a MudWing doctor named Mayfly. Winter decided to take his brother back to the Ice Kingdom. He claimed that he would not come back. Qibli and Moon said that, regardless, they would wait four days in case he changed his mind. After Peril came back from the palace, Turtle told Moon about the scroll in Chameleon's possession. Once the scroll was retrieved, Moon admitted that she had talked to Darkstalker and had promised to return it to him. A heated argument arose, ending in an interruption from Turtle to sleep. The morning after that, she left without the others, knowing how Winter would react. She was carrying the scroll to release Darkstalker. When Peril found her residing by Jade Mountain, Moonwatcher was crying because of what Darkstalker had done to Arctic. He had enchanted him to do whatever he said, and apparently, he had told him to disembowel himself. Soon the others returned in shock that she was crying and had not released him yet. Taking turns fighting, they argued about who got to keep the scroll. Peril tried to stop them by burning the scroll, but ended up giving Darkstalker precisely what he wanted, as he immediately got his powers back.

Moon, Kinkajou, and Turtle then go to a cave close to where the NightWings are sleeping. When Turtle returns from following Darkstalker, Moon is awake. Darkstalker then does something to Moon and Kinkajou so they don't hear him tell Anemone to leave. After Anemone leaves, Darkstalker gets them back to normal. Darkstalker enchanted a stalactite to heal Stonemover. This then removed Stonemover's curse, which caused him to yell in alarm that his claws are not his, after which Darkstalker enchanted it to turn him back to stone. In reaction to this, Flame almost killed Stonemover. After this dilemma, Darkstalker said he wanted to lead the NightWing tribe to the lost city of night.
In the very beginning, Qibli is watching Moon leave to the rainforest with Darkstalker. Later in the book, she is shown through the Obsidian Mirror talking to Kinkajou. In Part Two, she appears when Qibli finds her in the NightWing library. She and Qibli reunite and she seems happy to see him. Moon then begins talking about how amazing the NightWing library was, and that she would stay forever because of this. Qibli silently disagrees and thought he only would if she asked him too.

Qibli then offers her one of the earrings and explains that they will protect her from Darkstalker's spells. She looks sad, saying that they don't need to worry so much about Darkstalker, but puts it on anyway. The earring didn't change her opinion of him, confirming that her trust for Darkstalker was of her own.
When he got to the rainforest, he asked Glory if he could take her subjects back. To promote his idea, he started handing out superpowers to the NightWings. Moon decided to stay with Glory, as she believed her to be a worthy queen. Later she, Kinkajou, and Turtle then chose a cave close to where the NightWings were sleeping. When Turtle returned from following Darkstalker, Moon was awake. She said she had a nightmare and that her sleep schedule was different. Moon told Turtle he was a good brother, and then they have a conversation about it before they went to sleep. The next day, Moon said she was going to go with him, only to visit. They did so, and Moon followed Anemone to the room where Fathom had stayed, but Anemone said it was too dusty and dirty. Moon is present for much of the second and third parts of the book, and helps to fulfill The Jade Mountain Prophecy alongside Qibli, Turtle, Kinkajou, and Anemone. Later she is shown foreseeing Darkstalker as Peacemaker. In the epilogue, she and Qibli start an official relationship. Moon and Qibli then travel to Jerboa II, where they meet the first dragon from the lost continent of Pantala, later learned to be named Luna.
Darkstalker then enchanted both Moon and Kinkajou, so they could not hear him tell Anemone to leave (although, of course, the spell did not affect  Kinkajou, so Turtle told her to act like it). After Anemone left, Darkstalker restored Moon. She then said she sensed danger in the Kingdom of the Sea.

The earring did not change her opinion of him, confirming that her trust for Darkstalker was her own. Darkstalker soon appeared and noticed the earring, seeming saddened by Moon choosing to wear the earring. He introduced Moon to fake Clearsight, and invited them both to breakfast tomorrow.
She appears in the epilogue alongside Qibli when they first see Luna right where Darkness of Dragons ended. Moon is shocked to see a dragon from the lost continent for the first time, and introduces herself and Qibli to the SilkWing. Moon tells Luna that she had a vision about her and when Luna asks if she can see the future like Clearsight, Moon is surprised that Luna knows who Clearsight is. She tells her that she can see the future too, just not as well as Clearsight. Luna tells Moon she needs to get her back home, to which Moon says that she can’t and hasn’t even seen any visions of the future revolving around the lost continent. The young flamesilk responds saying that she has to, and that her tribe needs her help.

Moon went back to her and Kinkajou's room in the palace, and Qibli brought Winter there to reunite with the two of them. Winter and Moon started arguing on whether Darkstalker was evil, in which Winter told Moon about the IceWing plague. Qibli worried about Darkstalker reading her mind and wondering how she knew, but then Anemone appeared and gave Moon her skyfire. Moon took Qibli with her to go talk to Darkstalker, and saw him enchanting fake Clearsight to become different versions of herself. Moon talked to Darkstalker about the IceWing plague, which made him realize that the IceWings were going to wage war on them. Moon told Darkstalker to turn the fake Clearsight back into what she was before, and he turned Clearsight back into Fierceteeth. Moon and her winglet flew to Jade Mountain to try to stop the war from happening. At Jade Mountain, she tried to talk her fellow NightWings out of attacking the IceWings, to no success. During the battle, she attempted to convince Darkstalker to stop via mental communication. When Anemone cast the spell to open everyone's minds up, she told her friends what the dragons fighting were thinking. She saw a vision of Darkstalker living a normal life as Peacemaker. After talking to Hope, Moon and Kinkajou hid in the cave where Darkstalker and Qibli were, and revealed herself when Darkstalker said he knew she was there. Moon asked Qibli why he had not said yes to Darkstalker's offer, and after a short conversation, they flew outside together. Moon watched Darkstalker reunite with his mother, and told him about her vision of Peacemaker.

Moonwatcher appears in the prologue alongside Luna, Tsunami, and other dragons. Moon thinks that Luna wants her to save the SilkWings and that she is "the second coming of Clearsight." She thinks how Luna doesn't know that Moon can read minds and has a conversation with Luna. Moon tells Luna the prophecy she has been hearing in her head. Qibli, Tsunami, and Turtle join them. Turtle tells them how his animus magic is "broken" and the others debate ways to get to Pantala. Eventually Tsunami says that "all [she] and Turtle have to do is swim there."
In the epilogue, Moon asked Hope about the lost continent after having a vision about it, and later, Moon went to the stronghold, where she and Qibli started an official relationship with each other. Moon and Qibli then traveled to the northwest coast of the Kingdom of Sand, where they meet Jerboa III, who then introduces them to the first dragon from the lost continent of Pantala, later revealed to be named Luna.

Personality
Moon is a very quiet, private dragon. Due to being by herself for most of her life, she has trouble interacting with others, sometimes stammering when trying to talk and it doesn't help that she can read minds. She gets easily scared by loud and hectic situations, as shown by her anxiety about the prey center at Jade Mountain Academy. She often tries to avoid being around others by going off and reading scrolls. Moon is very anxious about what others will think of her, and doesn't open up easily to her peers.

She's admitted to herself at one point that she doesn't want anyone to be able to see her subconscious side because then they would never like her. She is shyer when she can hear someone's thoughts, though her mind-reading and precognition has helped her several times. From listening to Scarlet dream visiting Icicle, to knowing when the history cave would explode. In Winter Turning, she seemed to become more bold and less scared. This is most likely because of not hearing everyone's thoughts.
After Qibli, Pineapple, and Tsunami escaped Wasp Hive, they travelled southward until they ran into Moon, Sundew, and Lynx on the way there. The stealth team had a brief reunion before they left towards the abyss. Later, Moon appeared in the mindspace, although she had not been infected with the breath of evil. Luna was puzzled about this, before Moon told her that she could read minds. She learned that Pineapple and Luna had been taken over by the othermind. Qibli shouted at the group, telling them Pineapple had been infected. After a short scuffle between the stealth team and Cottonmouth (the one controlling Pineapple), Cottonmouth hit them with a proposition; he would let Luna go, under the condition that one of the stealth team members offer themself in her place. The stealth team reluctantly agreed to this, following Cottonmouth all the way to Lake Scorpion.

As the second arc progresses, Moon has less trouble with stuttering. She also has multiple conversations with others, particularly Winter, where she doesn't seem to be as scared as she was in Moon Rising. Moon has also been shown to be stubborn, especially regarding her belief that all dragons have some good inside. Also as the second series goes on, Moon doesn't let herself get pushed around as much, standing up to Winter when he's yelling at her in multiple books and confronting Darkstalker her new knowledge of his wrongs in Darkness of Dragons.
During this, Luna had the idea to share the memories of the stealth team to Freedom. They decided to share the memories through Moonwatcher. In Moonwatcher's memory, a young Moon was shown hiding away in the rainforest, waiting for her mother to arrive. As soon as the stealth team arrived at Lake Scorpion, they were attacked by Cottonmouth's dragons and a fight broke out. After Luna flew out of the abyss, Moon was part of the group that flew with her to Cicada Hive.

Moon becomes better at expressing her feelings, controlling her fear and letting go of her worries as the series progresses. She also handles her visions better, able to control the pain and keep flying in Darkness of Dragons instead of panicking like she did in Moon Rising. Moon also shows her determined side on many occasions, such as when she convinces Winter of his good qualities, advocates for her belief that all dragons have some good in them, or seeks out Qibli at the end of Darkness of Dragons to ask if they can be together.
In the NightWing chapter, Moon provided The Truth About NightWing Powers, a scroll about NightWing powers and how they work. She also made a suggestion for the school to have a class where NightWing students could learn to use their powers for good in the future.

Relationships
Relationships
Anemone
Moon seemed oblivious to Anemone's jealousy of her relationship with Darkstalker, up until Anemone enchanted a mop to attack her out of rage. Moonwatcher seems to forgive the SeaWing, as she defended Anemone when Darkstalker was furious with her for hurting Moon. Following her duel with Turtle, Anemone expressed remorse for her mistreatment of Moon, however she regretfully informed Turtle that although she was ashamed for picking on Moon, a part of her holds a twisted delight about it.ToP

Secretkeeper
Darkstalker
Secretkeeper is Moonwatcher's mother. During a hunting patrol in the rainforest, Secretkeeper lied to her companions about having stomach cramps, the egg coming out cracked, and wanting to bury the eggshells alone. She, however, later gave birth to Moonwatcher's egg and hid it among the rainforest foliage. Secretkeeper cares about her daughter very much, and was willing to risk everything - even, perhaps, her own life - in order to keep Moonwatcher safe and healthy from the volcano. She even refused to tell her partner, Morrowseer, about their dragonet, fearing that he would take Moonwatcher back to the Island if he ever found out about her existence. When Moonwatcher hatched, Secretkeeper was in awe and believed her to be the most perfect and healthy dragonet she'd ever seen. After Secretkeeper found out about Moonwatcher's mind-reading and prophetic powers, she was very worried, and warned Moonwatcher that she must always keep her power hidden in order to appear normal. She cares very much for Moonwatcher's safety and happiness, and although she sometimes becomes exasperated with Moonwatcher's nervousness and paranoia, she loves her nevertheless. In the epilogue of Darkness of Dragons, it was confirmed that Moonwatcher visits Secrekeeper in the rainforest often.
Moonwatcher was Darkstalker's best friend when he emerged from Agate Mountain.TDG She began crying at the discovery of what he had done to Arctic, and although she had just wanted to hear his voice again, she admitted that Arctic's death was the cruelest thing she had ever read.EP She later stated that she had been fine before she met Darkstalker,EP to which he responded by yelling at her.EP

Morrowseer
He was Moonwatcher's father, but they never knew each other; Morrowseer never knew that Moonwatcher existed, as Secretkeeper had told him about their dragonet for fear that he would demand she be returned to the island. Even after Morrowseer's death, Secretkeeper refused to talk about him; Moonwatcher had only gained his name from her mother's thoughts. He was killed in the Night Kingdom by the volcanic explosion before she met him. In The Dark Secret, when Moon would have been about three and a half years old, Mastermind asked Morrowseer if he had any dragonets, and the only response was a stony glare.

Qibli
Qibli is one of Moonwatcher's closest friends and a confirmed love interest. Moonwatcher respects his intelligence, bravery, and honesty, and loves him for being kind and humble. In Moon Rising, she admired his ability to gain information just by looking and analyzing a dragon, and it was confirmed near Moon Rising's conclusion that after giving Qibli skyfire, she would miss listening to his thoughts. Qibli began developing feelings for Moonwatcher very early on, though he was always very subtle and polite with his feelings for her.

The two act more like best friends than a couple, often joking and rarely being serious with each other. Qibli has proved to be a patient, loyal and respectful partner for Moonwatcher, and it was this that led her to choose him over Winter in the epilogue of Darkness of Dragons. However, Qibli often believed that he could never measure up to Winter, believing Winter to be too handsome and serious for Moonwatcher to choose anyone else - he even reprimanded himself for joking with and "acting like her goofy friend" instead of behaving romantically, as Winter would. In Winter Turning, he was also shown to be protective of not only her, but all of his friends, when he instinctively jumped in front of Moonwatcher in order to save her by a flaming spear.

Winter
After he was freed, Darkstalker refused to enchant Moonwatcher's mind as he did for most of Pyrrhia,DoD and she believed that he was not evil.DoD She genuinely liked him, largely due to the fact that he genuinely liked her, and he was one of the only dragons he trusted to believe in him and enjoy his company of their own accord.DoD They were genuine friends,DoD and Darkstalker considered a party boring because Moonwatcher did not attend.DoD She believed that he was good, and that he wanted the most peaceful future for Pyrrhia,DoD and she believed wholeheartedly that he would never kill her.DoD He appeared genuinely wounded when she began using skyfire and protection spells against his magic. She flinches whenever she hears his name,TDG although at one point they were good friendsDoD and she was saddened by the idea of him lying to her.DoD
Despite his icy exterior, Moon sees him as a friend and is hurt when he yells at her or calls her names. Winter admits many times that he's in love with her. She is very confused about his thoughts and doesn't quite understand what they mean, describing them as "mirrors, reflecting self-hate and guilt." In Winter Turning, Moon was distraught when Winter made the decision to leave. In Darkness of Dragons, However, Moon chose Qibli over him to be her partner. Winter was heartbroken over this decision, but came to realize in the end that it was himself who drove her away.

Darkstalker
While visiting Peacemaker, Moon always found it both sad and relieving that the young dragonet showed no signs of Darkstalker in him.DoDe After Darkstalker's defeat, Moon blamed herself for Darkstalker's rise to power, believing she had seen too much good in him and not enough of the bad.THQp
Darkstalker was the first dragon after Secretkeeper to learn about Moonwatcher's powers. Darkstalker was very upset that Moonwatcher hadn't received any training in how to use her powers without getting overwhelmed. He and Moon became good friends after he taught her to block out other dragons' thoughts, and she becomes the only dragon he truly cared about since Clearsight and Fathom. He asked her numerous times if she could retrieve his "talisman" - the scroll that held his animus power - and she tries to bring it to him in Escaping Peril. After Peril accidentally frees him, Moon accuses Darkstalker of lying to her. He defends himself, saying that he was desperate to escape his imprisonment, which may have been true. However, Moonwatcher doesn't seem to fully trust him after that.

Kinkajou
Kinkajou
She is Moon's best friend and has been shown to care much about her. Moonwatcher and her were clawmates in the Jade Winglet. Moon was distraught when Kinkajou was injured severely by a mysterious companion of Scarlet's (Chameleon, in his NightWing form, Shapeshifter), showing the strong bond between them. At first, Moon was put off by Kinkajou's energetic thoughts and actions, but realized that Kinkajou really did care about her.
Kinkajou is Moon's best friend and has been shown to care much about her. Clay thought Moon and Kinkajou were a good match, though Moon initially could not see any similarities between her and the bubbly RainWing.MR Moon was distraught when Kinkajou was severely injured by a mysterious companion of Scarlet's (Chameleon, in his NightWing form, Shapeshifter), showing the strong bond between them. At first, Moon was put off by Kinkajou's energetic thoughts and actions but realized that Kinkajou really did care about her. After Kinkajou found out that Moonwatcher could read minds, she felt like her privacy was invaded majorly, and did not trust Moonwatcher for a short period of time. But after the shock wore off, Kinkajou and Moonwatcher were best friends once again. She was visibly happy when she told Qibli that Kinkajou was unharmed.DoD

Anemone
Qibli
Princess Anemone appears to show a great deal of jealousy towards Moonwatcher throughout Talons of Power. This is because of Moon's closeness with Darkstalker. Moon seems oblivious to this until Anemone enchants a broom to attack her out of rage. Moonwatcher seems to forgive the SeaWing princess, as she defends Anemone when Darkstalker is furious with her for hurting Moon. Anemone, Princess of the Sea Kingdom, gives Darkstalker an enchanted snake shaped earring to make him like her more than Moon. Darkstalker denies the offer and states that he "doesn't accept gifts from animus dragons." He then bans Anemone from his kingdom, making her furious.
If it were up to Qibli, he would spend every day of his life flying with Moon. He recognizes subtle things about her,DoD and thinks about what she would do when he needs motivation.DoD Qibli wants to get Moon to like him and to Qibli, everything is less awful for when he is with her,DoD and he often wishes that she were by his side.DoD When Moon was in danger, he leaped aside to protect her with his wings,WT and he looks at Moon like he loves her.WT When Qibli spoke about how free he thought Possibility was, Moon looked at him like he made sense.WT When Moonwatcher said that she was unsure if anyone would want to come with her to fulfill the Jade Mountain Prophecy, Qibli waved a wing at himself as though it were obvious.WT When Winter told Moon he should have nothing to do with her, Qibli sounded genuinely angry.WT He feels a need to know whether or not she is safe,DoD and during his time away from her, he felt like he was a broken vase, and she was the piece that would fit him all back together.DoD He once thought that his ideal future would be as a loyal advisor to Thorn, but as he continued thinking about it, Moon appeared in the vision alongside him as his partner.DoD He wants to make her smile,DoD and she makes him happier than he has ever felt before.DoD For Qibli, being around Moonwatcher feels like being on a team with someone who works with him and makes his own brain work better.DoD He once stated that he would be there for Moon anytime she needed him,DoD and thought that if Moon ever died, it would kill him as well.DoD She often turns to him for physical comfort,DoD and he is considerate of her needs.DoD Darkstalker once mentioned that Qibli could never stay away from Moonwatcher for long.DoD In the epilogue of Darkness of Dragons, Moon asked Qibli if they could try 'being together'. Qibli wanted to, but he thought that his 'best friend', Winter needed Moon more than ever and that Winter couldn't live without her. But that was the same case for Qibli. In the end, Moon said that she was the one who couldn't live without Qibli. Qibli felt a deep connection between them, and he finally said yes to try 'being together' with Moon. Luna guessed that Qibli was 'her Swordtail' from the way they looked at each other, and the fact that they slept side by side every night on the trip to Pantala. To Moon, Qibli is one of the closest relationships, and that is likewise towards Qibli.TFoH

Family Tree
Secretkeeper
Moonwatcher Family Tree
Secretkeeper is Moon's mother and the first dragon to learn about her daughter's powers. She hid Moon's egg in the rainforest secretly, resulting in the other NightWings possessing no knowledge of her until they moved to the rainforest. While growing up, Moon was only able to be visited by her mother a few times a week until the NightWings moved into the rainforest. She felt extremely lonely during the periods of time alone. Moon really loves her mother and wanted to stay with her instead of going to school but was persuaded otherwise. Despite this, she still often visits her mother in the rainforest.MRDoDe Moon was a little hurt by the mental worries that Secretkeeper had about her and was jealous of Anemone because of Coral's fawning over her.MR In Talons of Power, when she journeyed to the Rainforest Kingdom, she was overjoyed to meet her mother again and flew into her arms.ToP

Quotes
Sora
"No. I don't want to be ... like other dragons. I just want them to not mind that I'm different, if that makes sense. I want to stop being scared - of being found out, of what my visions mean, of other dragons, of everything." - To Darkstalker
Upon meeting her, Moonwatcher recognized the same tremors of anxiety as she felt and even considered making friends with her.MR Sora had the same paralyzing anxiety that Moon had, and Moon wanted to use her powers to help her feel better.MR After realizing that Icicle was after Sora, Moonwatcher went to warn Sora, despite knowing that Sora had been who had set off the bomb.MR Moon came to discover that she was not as much like Sora as she originally though she was; though both were shy and timid, Moonwatcher was not as mentally fragile as Sora.MR Before Sora left, Moonwatcher reassured to her that no one was thinking about her as much as she thought they did.MR

"All right. But please stop trying to scare me. You are not as terrifying as you think you are." - To Winter
Sunny
Moonwatcher already had a liking for Sunny and Starflight as they visited in the rainforest.MR She liked how their thoughts matched what they said and did.MR Sunny was the first of the Jade Mountain Academy staff that Moonwatcher confessed the truth about her prophecy and mind-reading powers to.MR Sunny was kind and grateful towards Moonwatcher after she told her.MR

"If I couldn't read minds, everyone I met would be like Turtle - completely unreadable. Strange and blank. I'd have no way to know if they were kind or cruel. I'd never understand why they act the way they do. Everyone would be all surface. I'd think Winter was just mean; I wouldn't know about his dead brother and how he hates himself more than anyone else. I might think Qibli was just goofy and ordinary, if I didn't know about his layers and his amazing mind and his childhood. I'd have stayed away from Kinkajou, because I wouldn't have known or believed that she really liked me. I guess that's how other dragons live ... never knowing how complicated everyone is. That's what it would be like, to be normal." - Moonwatcher's thoughts
Turtle
Moonwatcher initially did not trust Turtle as he had his skyfire, which made his mind a quiet fuzz to her.MR Moonwatcher thought Turtle might have something sinister in him, as she had a vision of him fighting Anemone when she first saw him.MR As time passes, she sees him as more and more of a friend and learns to trust him.

"That just seems kind of wrong, doesn't it? I mean, judging dragons by their dark thoughts, and using that to justify spying on them? Lots of dragons think dark things sometimes; it doesn't mean they'll ever actually do them . . . I don't know, I guess I don't like to think of myself as sneaking around in dragons' heads. I can't help what I hear, but it doesn't seem fair to do it on purpose." - To Qibli
After the cave explosion and Moonwatcher's reveal of her powers, she visited the underwater lake with Turtle.MR He removed the dragonflame seedpod from her shoulder, and she wondered if he would let her drown if she fainted. He then told her to, "Go ahead and try." This referred to flying, but Moonwatcher wondered if he was offering her an escape as well.MR She thinks that she does not know him and believes he is interesting despite what he says to the contrary.

"You can't give up. Of course it's hard; the whole point is that you're trying to fix something that's nearly impossible to fix. But if no one ever tries, then it will always be terrible. You and Clay and the others ... dragons believe in you. You have to take that gift and do something with it, not run away from it." - To Sunny
In Escaping Peril, she defended him against others that how he used his power should be decided by him and him alone. When Turtle used his animus power to get Darkstalker's scroll from Chameleon, she was worried about his soul, but he shrugged them off as he said that the "tiniest of evil" was in him. Moon believes he is a good brother as he was willing to travel to the ends of Pyrrhia to protect Anemone, despite Turtle's protests.ToP In Darkness of Dragons, Darkstalker mentions that Moonwatcher was fond of Turtle and Kinkajou, which made him reluctant to kill either of them. She worries about his soul being affected by animus magic.EP

"I mean, no one is completely evil. ... Dragons are complicated. Some are kinder than others, or braver than others, and some of them do really cruel things. But everyone has both good thoughts and bad thoughts and reasons for what they do, reasons that they believe are important." - A famous quoteWT
Winter
Moonwatcher is one of Winter's closest friends, and Winter is in love with her.WT Moonwatcher once stated that she would never be Winter's enemy, no matter what he said.WT She wanted Winter to come with her to solve the Jade Mountain Prophecy, and her face crumbled into disappointment when he refused.WT Since Winter began wearing skyfire, it became a lot easier for Moonwatcher to talk to him,WT although Moonwatcher sometimes has to remind him not to order her around and to attempt to converse with her rationally instead of yelling.EP Winter sometimes jokes with Moonwatcher,WT but he feels a twisting feeling in his chest when he thinks about her,WT and hearing her say his name was described to be like a spell that runs warmth through his bones.WT Winter had never met anyone who seemed to be as interested in scavengers as he was until he met Moonwatcher.WT She is determined to support Winter whether he wants her help or not,WT and Winter has had quiet thoughts about how Moonwatcher is different from the other NightWings, and perhaps different than most dragons in Pyrrhia.WT His expression while looking at her once was soulful and full of tortured longing.DoD He quite likes her,TDG and misses her dearly after moving to Sanctuary.TDG

"Why would you be a librarian if you don't get excited about scrolls? I will never understand some dragons." - To Qibli about a strict SkyWing librarian from PossibilityDoD
Winter once thought that where Narwhal and Tundra saw Winter as nothing more than a gray lump of ice, Moonwatcher saw dazzling mountain peaks,WT as she regards him as one of the best dragons in Pyrrhia.WT Moonwatcher finds Winter's mind to be very confusing,WT but she regards Winter as someone who can think bigger than the things that affect him personally.WT She trusts WinterWT and thinks that he is honorable and brave,WT and Winter felt a rush of gratitude for her understanding of how important rescuing Hailstorm was to him.WT Winter often cannot tell when Moonwatcher is joking,WT but he looks at her in a loving way,WTDoD and felt hollowed out when he pictured her and Qibli together.WT He was afraid of what he might say to her alone in the dark.WT Winter's heart told him to rescue Moonwatcher when their group was attacked by Shapeshifter,WT and while he initially felt guilty about being Moonwatcher's friend under the judgement of Hailstorm, he felt a second wave of guilt after realizing how much Moonwatcher had done to help him.WT After Narwhal and Tundra intended for Winter to die during the Diamond Trial, he thought that Moonwatcher would never have done something like that to him,WT as he becomes his best self around her.DoD

"You told her, though. Why didn't he see it in your mind?" - To Kinkajou and Foeslayer after Darkstalker's downfallDoD
However, Winter acted harshlyDoD and explosively angry, causing Moonwatcher to flare up during their argument about Darkstalker;DoD Qibli wondered how he could yell at Moonwatcher the way he did, if he truly loved her,DoD and Kinkajou admitted that he had been mean towards her when he yelled at her or did not believe in her.DoD When Moonwatcher chose Qibli over Winter, he was heartbroken and wondered how long it would take for his heart to heal.DoDe

"I mean, no one is completely evil ... Dragons are complicated. Some are kinder than others, or braver than others, and some of them do really cruel things. But everyone has both good thoughts and bad thoughts and reasons for what they do, reasons that they believe are important."
— Moonwatcher to Qibli and Winter, Winter Turning

Moonwatcher, preferring the nickname "Moon", is a female NightWing dragonet and the main protagonist of Moon Rising. Raised in the Rainforest Kingdom by Secretkeeper until the age of four, Moonwatcher was born under two full moons, granting her true prophetic and mind-reading abilities that the NightWings had lacked for nearly a century. She currently attends Jade Mountain Academy as a member of the Jade Winglet and is in a relationship with Qibli.

Description

Moonwatcher is small,[1] with cool,[2] smooth, shiny[3] purplish-black scales that are imbued with hints of dark blue and green.[4] She has one glittering silver scale on the outside corner of each of her dark green eyes,[5] like a teardrop about to fall.[6] These scales are bigger and shinier than Fatespeaker's. She has powerful muscles,[2] black wings,[1] and frequently has small furrows crossing her forehead, as though she has a perpetual headache.[7] Secretkeeper describes her scales as "gleaming as though they'd been polished" and thought that she looked healthier than the NightWings who were raised on the volcano.[6]

Personality

Moonwatcher is nervous[8] and anxious,[9] but simultaneously kind, firm,[10] brave,[11] determined,[12] loyal, and friendly. She is easily flustered,[13] sometimes reluctant,[14] and she thinks that there are a lot of things wrong with her.[15] During the events of Moon Rising, Moonwatcher often found herself stammering when trying to talk,[16] and her mindreading and foresight made it difficult for her to communicate with others.[17] She suffers from social anxiety and is easily frightened by loud, overwhelming, and hectic situations.[18] She often tried to avoid being around others by reading scrolls to calm herself down.[citation needed] Moonwatcher was worried about what others would think of her, and she did not open up to her peers very easily; however, she still looked for the good in dragons.[19] Moonwatcher eventually learned to be more open about her powers and chose to use them for the good of other dragons instead of hiding them,[20] although, she still struggles to tell others about her mind reading.

According to Luna, she is kind of "spacey" at weird moments.[21] She has a sort of distracted air to her, as though "invisible dragons whisper in her ears while everyone else is talking".[22] Moon is generally well-liked by others,[23] and according to Qibli, she is fascinating.[24]

Biography

The Dragonet Prophecy

The Brightest Night
In the epilogue, Deathbringer briefly mentioned Moonwatcher, along with Mightyclaws as possible NightWings students who could attend Jade Mountain Academy. Glory responded, "That poor little nervous dragonet," in description of her.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Moon Rising

After laying Morrowseer's egg, Secretkeeper hid the egg in the rainforest to protect it from the volcano and the harsh living conditions of the NightWing island. As hatching under one or more full moons gives NightWings their powers, and NightWings not having those powers in thousands of years, Secretkeeper was shocked to see her egg had turned silver. Moonwatcher then hatched under two full moons, thus giving her the powers of mind-reading and foresight.

Clay then separated the arguing dragonets, and Moonwatcher realized that Carnelian was one of her clawmates as she stormed into their cave. Shortly afterwards, she was greeted by Kinkajou, her second clawmate, who invited her to the school library.

Winter Turning

Winter was outside Jade Mountain Academy, trying to convince Bandit to leave, when the rest of his winglet arrived, including Moon.

Once they had arrived, Moon offered Winter some fruit and started to discuss her childhood. Moon's mind was interrupted by a NightWing named Obsidian, who (according to Moon) had "dark thoughts." Arriving with Bromeliad, he nastily told them that rainforest visitors had to be permitted; as Kinkajou objected, Moon calmed her down by saying that going to the NightWing village would give her a chance to see her mother.

Moon read Icicle's mind while she was dreamvisited by Scarlet. She saw mountains in the background when Scarlet's real location was revealed. She drew a picture of them, and Deathbringer told them they should ask the Talons of Peace. They then went to the Sky Kingdom to find them.

When they were camping for the night, Qibli told Moon and Kinkajou the story of the night the War of SandWing Succession ended. When Winter took watch that night, he woke Moon up and told her that he thought Pyrite was an animus.

Throughout his entire time in the Ice Kingdom, Winter thought of Moon. Near the end, after he lost the Diamond Trial and because Hailstorm did not want to kill him, he returned to his winglet, ready to help stop the prophecy.
Escaping Peril

Turtle and Peril journeyed to Possibility to find Moon, Qibli, Winter, and Kinkajou. When they met and started talking, Moon told Peril that Qibli probably had thought of five ways to defeat Peril, although he had probably thought of three by the time she stated that. Then, she revealed to Peril that she was a mind reader, to which Winter later objected. Moon and Qibli awaited Winter, though they had doubts that he would show up. When Moon found Winter, he was severely burned because of an accident with Peril, and she frantically told him not to die. Turtle revealed his animus magic by healing Winter with his river rock he enchanted to heal surface wounds. Moon was shocked to hear of his unexpected powers, and realized that was the secret he had mentioned in Jade Mountain.

After Peril came back from the SkyWing palace, Turtle told Moon about the scroll in Chameleon's possession.
Talons of Power

Moon was with Darkstalker when he emerged out from the ground and talked to him. When she noticed that Winter, who at first was arguing with Darkstalker, was now acting friendly and more open towards him, she told him not to enchant her friends, but Darkstalker denied that he did anything to Winter. When they told him they all should go hunting, she told Turtle to warn the school. Turtle did so, only to intrigue Anemone to meet Darkstalker. When they arrived after hunting, Darkstalker mentioned seeing timelines with both of them, most likely referring to Winter and Qibli, where she responds by covering her ears and denying everything. Anemone sets off a lightning storm with copper armbands she enchanted to do so. Darkstalker asks if there are any scrolls about Fathom and Clearsight.

Flame came to them, only to have the horrid scar on his face healed. Darkstalker also enchanted a bracelet on Mindreader to give her mind-reading abilities, Mightyclaws' earring to give him the power to have anything he draws to come to life, and a makeshift bracelet for Fearless to give her super-strength. Moon seemed worried about him giving out these free powers, provoking the now empowered NightWings to claim that she was just jealous. After this, Moonwatcher has a vision of someone being attacked, and brought Sunny and the others to Stonemover, who was very close to dying.

Darkstalker enchanted a stalactite to heal Stonemover. This then removed Stonemover's curse, which caused him to yell in alarm that his claws are not his, after which Darkstalker enchanted it to turn him back to stone. Anemone enchanted a piece of bone to find the culprit, who was Flame. He stated that he asked Stonemover to enchant his scar to heal, but he had refused his request, to conserve his soul. In reaction to this, Flame almost killed Stonemover. After this dilemma, Darkstalker said he wanted to lead the NightWing tribe to the lost city of night.

She started to beat Moon with a mop she enchanted to continue to hit her until she began and finished cleaning.

Darkness of Dragons

Qibli watched Moon leave for the rainforest with Darkstalker. Later in the book, she was shown through the Obsidian Mirror talking to Kinkajou. Soon after arriving in the lost city of night, Qibli found her in the NightWing library. Moon and Qibli reunited, and she seemed happy to see him again. Moon then began to talk about how amazing the NightWing library was and that she would stay forever because of this. Qibli silently disagreed and thought he only would if she asked him to.

Qibli then offered her one of the enchanted earrings and explained that they would protect her from Darkstalker's spells. She looked sad, saying that they do not need to worry so much about Darkstalker, but put the earring on anyway.

In the epilogue, Moon asked Hope about the lost continent after having a vision about it, and later, Moon went to the SandWing stronghold, where she and Qibli started an official relationship with each other. Moon and Qibli then traveled to the northwest coast of the Kingdom of Sand, where they meet Jerboa III, who then introduces them to the first dragon from the lost continent of Pantala, later revealed to be named Luna.

The Lost Continent Prophecy

The Lost Continent
In the epilogue, Moon was alongside Qibli when they first saw Luna right where Darkness of Dragons ended. Moon was shocked to see a dragon from the lost continent for the first time and introduced herself and Qibli to the SilkWing. Moon told Luna that she had a vision about her, and when Luna asked if she could see the future like Clearsight, Moon was surprised that Luna knew who Clearsight was. She told her that she could see the future too, just not as well as Clearsight did. Luna told Moon that she needed to get back home, to which Moon said that she could not and had not even seen any visions of the future revolving around the lost continent. The young SilkWing responded, saying that she had to go home and that her tribe needed her help.
The Hive Queen

Moonwatcher was sitting on beach near Jerboa III's hut, alongside Luna. Moon thought that Luna wanted her to save the SilkWings from Queen Wasp and that she was "the second coming of Clearsight." She thought how Luna did not know that Moon could also read minds, and had a conversation with her, feeling guilty. Moon wanted to tell Luna about the prophecy she had been hearing in her head. Qibli, Tsunami, and Turtle soon joined them. Turtle told them how his animus magic was "broken," and the others debated on how to get to Pantala. Eventually, Tsunami said that "all [she] and Turtle have to do is swim there."

In the epilogue, Moon was with Luna on the beach again. She shared her new vision with Luna and said that the Pantalan dragons are coming to Pyrrhia. Moon also saw dragons fighting one another and flames, which are probably from the burning of Bloodworm Hive.
The Poison Jungle
Moon was mentioned by Tsunami when she was staying in the SapWing village on Pantala.
The Dangerous Gift

Moonwatcher was with Qibli near Jerboa III's hut. Snowfall remembered darkly that she was the dragon Winter liked very much and Darkstalker's first friend. Her hatred of Moon eventually resulted in her insulting her and purposely thinking darkly about the NightWings to disturb her. Moon asked for Snowfall to come along the other dragons on the journey to Sanctuary.

Moon eventually told the prophecy to all the Pyrrhian queens (excluding Coral). She was chosen by Glory to be the NightWing representative of the stealth team, a group of ten dragons from each tribe and Wren (as the human representative), who were chosen to journey to Pantala to stop the threat of the othermind.
The Flames of Hope

Moon was indirectly mentioned by Luna when she told Swordtail about a dragon who could see the future and gave them a prophecy. On the journey to Pantala, she suggested that some of them were more useful than they looked, referring to Qibli. The stealth team was attacked by a group of mind-controlled HiveWings, and were turned invisible by Sundew. Moon used her fire to distract the HiveWings from the rest of the team. However, Moon was captured by the HiveWings, knocked unconscious, and taken away. It was later revealed that she had been rescued by Sundew and Lynx before she was brought to the queen.

A Guide to the Dragon World

Moonwatcher was first mentioned in Kinkajou's story about Silver in the RainWing chapter. She was later indirectly mentioned as one of the students who found Python's letter in the library in Possibility.

In the NightWing chapter, Moon provided The Truth About NightWing Powers, a scroll about NightWing powers and how they work. She also made a suggestion for the school to have a class where NightWing students could learn to use their powers for good in the future.

Relationships

Moon seemed oblivious to Anemone's jealousy of her relationship with Darkstalker, up until Anemone enchanted a mop to attack her out of rage. Moonwatcher seems to forgive the SeaWing, as she defended Anemone when Darkstalker was furious with her for hurting Moon. Following her duel with Turtle, Anemone expressed remorse for her mistreatment of Moon, however she regretfully informed Turtle that although she was ashamed for picking on Moon, a part of her holds a twisted delight about it.[25]

Moonwatcher was Darkstalker's best friend when he emerged from Agate Mountain.[26] She began crying at the discovery of what he had done to Arctic, and although she had just wanted to hear his voice again, she admitted that Arctic's death was the cruelest thing she had ever read.[27] She later stated that she had been fine before she met Darkstalker,[28] to which he responded by yelling at her.[29]

After he was freed, Darkstalker refused to enchant Moonwatcher's mind as he did for most of Pyrrhia,[30] and she believed that he was not evil.[31] She genuinely liked him, largely due to the fact that he genuinely liked her, and he was one of the only dragons he trusted to believe in him and enjoy his company of their own accord.[30] They were genuine friends,[32] and Darkstalker considered a party boring because Moonwatcher did not attend.[33] She believed that he was good, and that he wanted the most peaceful future for Pyrrhia,[34] and she believed wholeheartedly that he would never kill her.[35] He appeared genuinely wounded when she began using skyfire and protection spells against his magic. She flinches whenever she hears his name,[14] although at one point they were good friends[23] and she was saddened by the idea of him lying to her.[36]

While visiting Peacemaker, Moon always found it both sad and relieving that the young dragonet showed no signs of Darkstalker in him.[37] After Darkstalker's defeat, Moon blamed herself for Darkstalker's rise to power, believing she had seen too much good in him and not enough of the bad.[38]

Kinkajou is Moon's best friend and has been shown to care much about her. Clay thought Moon and Kinkajou were a good match, though Moon initially could not see any similarities between her and the bubbly RainWing.[39] Moon was distraught when Kinkajou was severely injured by a mysterious companion of Scarlet's (Chameleon, in his NightWing form, Shapeshifter), showing the strong bond between them. She was visibly happy when she told Qibli that Kinkajou was unharmed.[32]

If it were up to Qibli, he would spend every day of his life flying with Moon. He recognizes subtle things about her,[40] and thinks about what she would do when he needs motivation.[41] Qibli wants to get Moon to like him and to Qibli, everything is less awful for when he is with her,[11] and he often wishes that she were by his side.[12] When Moon was in danger, he leaped aside to protect her with his wings,[42] and he looks at Moon like he loves her.[43] When Qibli spoke about how free he thought Possibility was, Moon looked at him like he made sense.[44] When Moonwatcher said that she was unsure if anyone would want to come with her to fulfill the Jade Mountain Prophecy, Qibli waved a wing at himself as though it were obvious.[45] When Winter told Moon he should have nothing to do with her, Qibli sounded genuinely angry.[46] He feels a need to know whether or not she is safe,[47] and during his time away from her, he felt like he was a broken vase, and she was the piece that would fit him all back together.[48] He once thought that his ideal future would be as a loyal advisor to Thorn, but as he continued thinking about it, Moon appeared in the vision alongside him as his partner.[49] He wants to make her smile,[50] and she makes him happier than he has ever felt before.[51] For Qibli, being around Moonwatcher feels like being on a team with someone who works with him and makes his own brain work better.[52] He once stated that he would be there for Moon anytime she needed him,[53] and thought that if Moon ever died, it would kill him as well.[54] She often turns to him for physical comfort,[55] and he is considerate of her needs.[56] Darkstalker once mentioned that Qibli could never stay away from Moonwatcher for long.[33] In the epilogue of Darkness of Dragons, Moon asked Qibli if they could try 'being together'. To Moon, Qibli is one of the closest relationships, and that is likewise towards Qibli.[57]

Despite this, she still often visits her mother in the rainforest.[58][37] Moon was a little hurt by the mental worries that Secretkeeper had about her and was jealous of Anemone because of Coral's fawning over her.[59] In Talons of Power, when she journeyed to the Rainforest Kingdom, she was overjoyed to meet her mother again and flew into her arms.[60]

Upon meeting her, Moonwatcher recognized the same tremors of anxiety as she felt and even considered making friends with her.[61] Sora had the same paralyzing anxiety that Moon had, and Moon wanted to use her powers to help her feel better.[62] After realizing that Icicle was after Sora, Moonwatcher went to warn Sora, despite knowing that Sora had been who had set off the bomb.[63] Moon came to discover that she was not as much like Sora as she originally though she was; though both were shy and timid, Moonwatcher was not as mentally fragile as Sora.[64] Before Sora left, Moonwatcher reassured to her that no one was thinking about her as much as she thought they did.[65]

Moonwatcher already had a liking for Sunny and Starflight as they visited in the rainforest.[66] She liked how their thoughts matched what they said and did.[67] Sunny was the first of the Jade Mountain Academy staff that Moonwatcher confessed the truth about her prophecy and mind-reading powers to.[68] Sunny was kind and grateful towards Moonwatcher after she told her.[69]

Moonwatcher initially did not trust Turtle as he had his skyfire, which made his mind a quiet fuzz to her.[70] Moonwatcher thought Turtle might have something sinister in him, as she had a vision of him fighting Anemone when she first saw him.[71] As time passes, she sees him as more and more of a friend and learns to trust him.

After the cave explosion and Moonwatcher's reveal of her powers, she visited the underwater lake with Turtle.[72] He removed the dragonflame seedpod from her shoulder, and she wondered if he would let her drown if she fainted. He then told her to, "Go ahead and try." This referred to flying, but Moonwatcher wondered if he was offering her an escape as well.[73] She thinks that she does not know him and believes he is interesting despite what he says to the contrary.

In Escaping Peril, she defended him against others that how he used his power should be decided by him and him alone. When Turtle used his animus power to get Darkstalker's scroll from Chameleon, she was worried about his soul, but he shrugged them off as he said that the "tiniest of evil" was in him. Moon believes he is a good brother as he was willing to travel to the ends of Pyrrhia to protect Anemone, despite Turtle's protests.[74] In Darkness of Dragons, Darkstalker mentions that Moonwatcher was fond of Turtle and Kinkajou, which made him reluctant to kill either of them. She worries about his soul being affected by animus magic.[75]

Moonwatcher is one of Winter's closest friends, and Winter is in love with her.[76] Moonwatcher once stated that she would never be Winter's enemy, no matter what he said.[46] She wanted Winter to come with her to solve the Jade Mountain Prophecy, and her face crumbled into disappointment when he refused.[45] Since Winter began wearing skyfire, it became a lot easier for Moonwatcher to talk to him,[77] although Moonwatcher sometimes has to remind him not to order her around and to attempt to converse with her rationally instead of yelling.[78] Winter sometimes jokes with Moonwatcher,[77] but he feels a twisting feeling in his chest when he thinks about her,[79] and hearing her say his name was described to be like a spell that runs warmth through his bones.[80] Winter had never met anyone who seemed to be as interested in scavengers as he was until he met Moonwatcher.[81] She is determined to support Winter whether he wants her help or not,[82] and Winter has had quiet thoughts about how Moonwatcher is different from the other NightWings, and perhaps different than most dragons in Pyrrhia.[83] His expression while looking at her once was soulful and full of tortured longing.[84] He quite likes her,[26] and misses her dearly after moving to Sanctuary.[85]

Winter once thought that where Narwhal and Tundra saw Winter as nothing more than a gray lump of ice, Moonwatcher saw dazzling mountain peaks,[86] as she regards him as one of the best dragons in Pyrrhia.[87] Moonwatcher finds Winter's mind to be very confusing,[81] but she regards Winter as someone who can think bigger than the things that affect him personally.[88] She trusts Winter[88] and thinks that he is honorable and brave,[88] and Winter felt a rush of gratitude for her understanding of how important rescuing Hailstorm was to him.[89] Winter often cannot tell when Moonwatcher is joking,[90] but he looks at her in a loving way,[43][91] and felt hollowed out when he pictured her and Qibli together.[92] He was afraid of what he might say to her alone in the dark.[93] Winter's heart told him to rescue Moonwatcher when their group was attacked by Shapeshifter,[94] and while he initially felt guilty about being Moonwatcher's friend under the judgement of Hailstorm, he felt a second wave of guilt after realizing how much Moonwatcher had done to help him.[95] After Narwhal and Tundra intended for Winter to die during the Diamond Trial, he thought that Moonwatcher would never have done something like that to him,[96] as he becomes his best self around her.[51]

However, Winter acted harshly[34] and explosively angry, causing Moonwatcher to flare up during their argument about Darkstalker;[31] Qibli wondered how he could yell at Moonwatcher the way he did, if he truly loved her,[97] and Kinkajou admitted that he had been mean towards her when he yelled at her or did not believe in her.[98] When Moonwatcher chose Qibli over Winter, he was heartbroken and wondered how long it would take for his heart to heal.[37]

Quotes

"No. I don't want to be ... like other dragons. I just want them to not mind that I'm different, if that makes sense. I want to stop being scared — of being found out, of what my visions mean, of other dragons, of everything."
― to Darkstalker (Moon Rising, page 61)

"All right. But please stop trying to scare me. You are not as terrifying as you think you are."
― to Winter (Moon Rising, page 92)

"If I couldn't read minds, everyone I met would be like Turtle — completely unreadable. That's what it would be like, to be normal."
― thoughts about her powers (Moon Rising, page 198)

"That just seems kind of wrong, doesn't it? I mean, judging dragons by their dark thoughts, and using that to justify spying on them? Lots of dragons think dark things sometimes; it doesn't mean they'll ever actually do them ... I don't know, I guess I don't like to think of myself as sneaking around in dragons' heads. I can't help what I hear, but it doesn't seem fair to do it on purpose."
― to Qibli (Moon Rising, page 233)

"You can't give up. Of course it's hard; the whole point is that you're trying to fix something that's nearly impossible to fix. But if no one ever tries, then it will always be terrible. You and Clay and the others ... dragons believe in you. You have to take that gift and do something with it, not run away from it."
― to Sunny, about Jade Mountain Academy (Moon Rising, page 281)

"I mean, no one is completely evil ... Dragons are complicated. Some are kinder than others, or braver than others, and some of them do really cruel things. But everyone has both good thoughts and bad thoughts and reasons for what they do, reasons that they believe are important."
― to Winter (Winter Turning, page 77)

"Because I think she's the kind of dragon you respect. And I think you wouldn't want to start a war between the IceWings and both of her tribes. I think you can imagine what killing her would do to Pyrrhia, and you know it would be bad. Also, you're her guest; she's welcomed and trusted you. You aren't the kind of dragon who betrays someone's trust. I've already been in there for one thing — I know you. And I've watched you. I saw you put out the fire in the history cave. I saw you save me and Starflight from your own sister. I think you can think bigger than just one tribe against another — you can think about what's best for all the tribes. I guess I just — I trust you."
― to Winter, about Glory (Winter Turning, page 119)

"I told her because it's the right thing to do, and because there's no way to give her any skyfire, and also because I am hoping that if she knows I'm listening, she'll try to have less disturbing thoughts."
― to Qibli, about Peril (Escaping Peril, page 110)

"Not everyone has to be a scrollworm. For you, other dragons are like scrolls — you love meeting new ones and trying to read them. You're always thinking about how other dragons think and what they're like on the inside. That's what ... I mean, that's one of the interesting things about you."
― to Qibli (Darkness of Dragons, page 237)

"Talking to Darkstalker? It's the right thing to do. I want to see what he says when he's confronted with his lies. And I want to hear how he's justified the IceWing plague to himself. I think I'm one of the few dragons left he'll at least try to be honest with — I mean, about himself and his reasons for what he does — unless I'm completely delusional about our friendship. But I think he wants me to agree with him so he can feel like he's doing the right thing."
― to Qibli (Darkness of Dragons, page 264)

"But that's why she feels wrong to you, Darkstalker. Because this is wrong, this ... experimenting with other dragons. Trying to create a perfect dragon for yourself. Trying to change someone to be exactly what you think you want. That's not love."
― to Darkstalker (Darkness of Dragons, page 271)

"We still have to stop the fighting. If I put this down, I can reach Darkstalker's mind. I'll try to talk him into ending the battle. It seems kind of fitting that this started with us talking in our minds, and maybe that's how it'll end, too."
― to Qibli, about the Battle of Jade Mountain (Darkness of Dragons, page 314)

"Qibli. How are you so brilliant and such an idiot at the same time? You are special. You don't need his poisoned magic, or any magic. You're smart and you're brave and you care and you don't give up and you take all of that and use it to help other dragons instead of yourself. That's better than magic. You did the right thing."
― to Qibli (Darkness of Dragons, page 341-342)

"The future of Pyrrhia is not your own personal scroll, waiting for you to write it, Darkstalker. The only future you control is yours. And you have not brought happiness to the dragon tribes. We don't want that future you see if we have to travel down your dark path to get there."
― to Darkstalker (Darkness of Dragons, page 350)

"I know [...] But remember, we're not going to confront Wasp. Our mission is to find out what's in the abyss that Queen Snowfall saw with her vision from the ring. And hopefully it'll be a way to save your friends without needing any magic or, um...stabbing"
― To Luna about the mission (The Flames of Hope, page 25)
