LeafWings are one of the three tribes (alongside SilkWings and HiveWings) that inhabited the continent of Pantala before they supposedly became extinct during the Tree Wars with the HiveWings. LeafWings have green and brown scales on their body, along with leaf-like patterns. They appear to have webbed spines, along their neck and back, similar to a SeaWing's. LeafWings were able to absorb sunlight in a process called photosynthesis. They are said to have been accomplished gardeners, and it is rumored some had unusual control over plants. They also used certain plants and arthropods as weapons against other dragons, such as bullet ants or poisonous centipedes. It has been shown that some can understand the language of plants, and convince them to grow at an accelerated rate. This trait, Leafspeak, is genetic, as shown by Sundew being the careful product of dragons with Leafspeak selectively breeding. Sundew also stated that she can make most plants grow faster(at the "speed of an erupting volcano"), but can't make them appear out of thin air(citation needed).

LeafWings are one of the three tribes, alongside the SilkWings and HiveWings, that inhabit the continent of Pantala. They are the only living tribe that was mentioned in the Legend of the Hive, the other tribe being the now-extinct BeetleWings. Before the events of the Tree Wars, the LeafWings were ruled by Queen Sequoia.

In The Lost Continent, many SilkWings and HiveWings believed the LeafWings had been exterminated during the Tree Wars, although a few believed that they were still alive. Many of the Hives were filled with propaganda posters depicting LeafWings as vicious, cruel, and terrifying. Ex-Queen Wasp antagonized them so much that most of the trees, believed to be symbolic of the LeafWings, were destroyed after the Tree Wars, and trees were banned by HiveWing law from being included in artwork. This is most likely because Wasp believed the trees gave power to the LeafWings.

In The Hive Queen, Sundew stated that the PoisonWings were planning to restart the Tree Wars, and that the surviving LeafWings lived in the Poison Jungle. They began their mission by burning Bloodworm Hive.

In The Poison Jungle and The Dangerous Gift, Hazel temporarily served as Queen of the LeafWings while Sequoia was under the control of the othermind.

As of The Flames of Hope, most of the LeafWings reside within the LeafSilk Kingdom.

Description

LeafWings can be various shades of green and brown, even to the point of being nearly black in color.[1] They can also sometimes have golden[2] or pinkish red streaks over their bodies and wings.[3] They have green[4] or brown[5] eyes and webbed spines along their neck and back, similar to that of a SeaWing. The webbing along their back splits into individual pieces near the base of the tail, which are shaped like leaves. Their snout is slightly curved, with a raised ridge on the end.

LeafWings have a flat plated tail, ending in a leaf-shaped oval at the tip. Their wings are leaf-like, playing directly into their namesake. They are also slightly transparent, with veins in the webbing and rounded edges. Their horns appear to be skinny, curved, and flat-ended, and the scales above their eyes continue over the top of their horns, giving it a partially plated look.

Their scales are uneven and vaguely resemble chloroplasts and plant cells. They have a plated underbelly and a slender body shape. Their legs seem to be slightly short and thin.

The PoisonWings have been seen carrying leaf or grass pouches containing deadly plants and insects.[6]

Diet

LeafWings are somewhat autotrophic, being able to absorb energy from the sun that allows them to eat infrequently.[event 1] They are omnivores and consume animals in the Poison Jungle, such as panthers,[7] snails, capybaras,[8] frogs, insects, and wild pigs.[9] LeafWings also consume taro, sugared grasshoppers, and chocolate, usually as a snack or treat.[10][11] LeafWings sometimes cook their food for occasions such as all-tribe feasts.[12] LeafWings are also noted to eat kambu, potatoes,[13] and fruits such as mangos,[8] bananas, papayas, avocados, and dragonberries.[13]

Abilities

LeafWings can absorb energy from sunlight, similar to RainWings, and are accomplished gardeners.[14] They may possess leafspeak, which allows dragons to talk to plants. Leafspeakers may convince already existing plants or seeds to grow at an accelerated rate,[15] grow in a certain way,[16] or convince the plant to attack (or not attack) a specific target, though they cannot produce them from nothing.[17] As leafspeak is genetic, selective breeding may be employed to achieve stronger leafspeak abilities; two leafspeakers may produce a dragonet with stronger leafspeak than either of them.[18]

Most LeafWings appear to have exceptional knowledge over plants and insects, using them as weapons against other dragons.[19] Some LeafWings can also swim.[20]

Society

Pre-Tree Wars

Before the Tree Wars, the LeafWings lived everywhere on Pantala where there were trees.[9] They had many libraries[21] and it was suggested that LeafWing dragonets were educated at academies.[22] The LeafWings celebrated an event known as the New Year of the Trees which they continued to celebrate during and just after the Tree Wars.[23] It is unknown if this celebration still occurs.

The LeafWing queen would meet with the SilkWing and HiveWing queen every few moons to smooth out disputes.[24]

Post-Tree Wars

After the events of the Tree Wars, the tribe split into two groups; half of them staying loyal to Queen Sequoia and wanting to lay low and isolate themselves until Wasp's death, and the other half united under Linden and swore revenge against the HiveWings for destroying their trees.[25] Each group claims to be the, "real LeafWings,"[26] calling the others a separate tribe. However, Luna considers the LeafWings as a whole to be the fiercest tribe on Pantala.[27]

The violent LeafWings were dubbed "PoisonWings" by the other group for being needlessly violent and naming their dragonets after dangerous plants.[25] Commander Belladonna was the former ruler of the PoisonWings, though she was formerly controlled by the othermind. She often assigned important missions, including one that ultimately led to the Burning of Bloodworm Hive. She planned for Sundew to marry Mandrake in order to breed more leafspeak dragonets so that they could become part of the PoisonWing community and help fight in the war. PoisonWing dragonets were not taught about the "SapWings" until they turned four.[28] Dragonets lived with their family in nests until they turn five, when they would leave to build their own.[29]

The other group of LeafWings were called "SapWings" due to their need to seek for balance in unity and understanding instead of violence. Queen Sequoia was their former leader. Though the peaceful SapWings were often called spineless and brainless by the PoisonWings, they are shown to be more open-minded than the militaristic PoisonWings and less strict, unlike their rival. Unlike the PoisonWings, they learned about the other half of the tribe in school.[25]

The two factions bear animosity against each other for their methods and ideas, but Sequoia and Commander Belladonna did occasionally hold meetings in secret.[30]

LeafWings were also told that SilkWings were not allowed to go to school.[31]

After Wasp was defeated and replaced by Jewel as queen of the HiveWings, most of the LeafWings went to live in the LeafSilk Kingdom.[32]

Literature is important to the LeafWings, especially after the Tree Wars. It was believed by the HiveWings and some SilkWings that the LeafWings could not read.[21] They use jungle ingredients for bookbinding, including sap for glue, tree fiber for threads, and bark with dye made from flowers for book covers.[33] They also use firefly lamps as a source of light.[34]

Names

LeafWings were named after different types of trees that are found in forests and woods before the Tree Wars. After the Tree Wars, the LeafWings split into the PoisonWings and SapWings. The factions have a very stark difference in their naming systems.

PoisonWings are named after poisonous plants; although some are named after carnivorous plants, or plants poisonous to smaller animals, such as Sundew, Nettle, Cobra Lily, and Mandrake. SapWings are named after trees, such as Willow, Sequoia, and Hawthorn.[25]
