HiveWings are one of the three tribes that live on Pantala. HiveWings are the tribe that currently has control of most of Pantala, as they killed off most of the LeafWings and took over the SilkWings. They are ruled by Queen Wasp, and are primarily based on wasps as well as other insects.
HiveWings are one of the three tribes that reside on Pantala. Prior to the ending of The Flames of Hope, HiveWings were the dominating tribe on Pantala; they enslaved the SilkWings and almost exterminated the LeafWings during the time of the Tree Wars.

Their colors primarily include shades of red, yellow, orange, and always some black, but may have other variations such as dark green.
They are currently ruled by Queen Jewel. HiveWings are descended from BeetleWings, with a small amount of NightWing genes from Clearsight, who is the common ancestor of all HiveWings.

Description
Description
HiveWings have slender, incredibly strong and muscular bodies, with four thin and clear segmented wings. According to the description in the guide to the dragons of Pantala, HiveWings can be red, yellow, and/or orange, but always have some black scales. The common belief among HiveWings is that the reason why they have black scales because they share the same ancestor, Clearsight. This is mentioned in The Hive Queen, in which Lady Scarab mentions that she learned through the history books that Clearsight and her multiple SilkWing husbands had many children, and their many children had many children with SilkWings. This apparently formed the HiveWing tribe, which officially broke off from the SilkWings in roughly 4,500 AS. HiveWings have a slightly compact face, with a smaller nose-ridge on the tip of their snout, and a larger curved ridge on their forehead. Some HiveWings, such as Katydid, Sandfly, and Lady Scarab have freckle-like scales. Confirmed eye colors include black, brown, red, amber, and green. In The Lost Continent, when Blue was being shuffled off to the flamesilk cavern, he mentions the "yellow-orange-green glow" of HiveWings' eyes, suggesting a sort of light to their eyes. This glow or the eyes themselves could be green. They have a pair of long, curved, and smooth-looking horns, that raise slightly above their head, the tips curving slightly forward, giving them an almost regal appearance. Long thin spikes go down their spines, to the tip of their tails, which have a slightly larger spine, which can be used to spray acid or inject venom, alongside spikes on their wrists used for similar purposes (if they have that ability). Another ability of the HiveWings in to emit a powerful stench, as shown by Lady Scarab. It is unknown where this smell is exuded, whether it be spines, a gland, or a bodily orifice. Some HiveWings, like Treehopper, have been shown to be green, and based on how Cricket said Cinnabar somewhat looked a HiveWing, they may have burnet scales, like her. According to Cricket in The Hive Queen, some, likely most HiveWings do not have powers.

HiveWings are first class citizens in their society. They live in Hives ruled by Wasp and her female relatives. According to the Pantala dragon guide, the HiveWings' powers can vary from dragon to dragon, though many (like Cricket) do not have any powers. These abillities are genetic and can be passed down. Deadly stingers extending from their wrists, venom in claws or teeth, paralyzing nerve toxin, boiling acid that can be shot from a barb on their tail, and emanating a horrible stench are a few examples but there are more. The queen can also control the minds of any HiveWing whom she has injected with a certain plant. This plant is kept in her off-limits, personal greenhouse garden. HiveWings are said to have completely white eyes when under the mind-control and move in eerie unison. Cricket says Katydid describes the feeling as having an unstoppable urge to do what the Queen makes them, similar to being hypnotized (even if is against their personal morals). Blue speculates whether or not the controlled dragons feel guilt for what they are forced to do; Cricket responds that she doesn't know, stating "That's one of the questions I'm definitely not supposed to ask: Hey, do you ever feel bad about what Queen Wasp makes us do?"

HiveWings are one of the three tribes that reside on Pantala. Prior to the ending of The Flames of Hope, HiveWings were the dominating tribe on Pantala; they enslaved the SilkWings and almost exterminated the LeafWings during the time of the Tree Wars.

They are currently ruled by Queen Jewel. HiveWings are descended from BeetleWings, with a small amount of NightWing genes from Clearsight, who is the common ancestor of all HiveWings.

Description

HiveWings have slender, strong, sharp, and muscular bodies. They have four thin, clear, and segmented wings that resemble those of wasps, dragonflies, and other insects. They have a slightly compact face, with a small axe-like ridge on the tip of their snout, and a second, larger curved ridge on the middle of their snout. They have a pair of long, curved, smooth-looking horns. Some HiveWings hatch with stingers in their wrists or tails that have the ability to inject venom.

According to A Guide to the Dragons of Pantala, HiveWing scales can be red, yellow and/or orange.[1] They always have at least a few black scales mixed in inherited from their shared ancestor, Clearsight.[2] Some are almost completely black in color, such as Hawker[2] and Bombardier.[3] Some may also have green scales, such as Treehopper.[4] Some HiveWings, such as Katydid, Sandfly, and Scarab, have freckle-like scales, or splashes/splotches of scales like Cricket. HiveWing eye colors include black,[5] orange,[6] brown,[7] red,[8] yellow-gold,[9] green,[10] and amber.[11] Blue once mentioned that HiveWing eyes have a "green-yellow-orange glow".[12] Wasp was noted to have dark green blood,[13] but this may be unique to her as she was imbued with the breath of evil for about 50 years.

HiveWing eggs are white.[14]

Diet

A pair of HiveWings having a drink in a shop at the Jewel Hive Glitterbazaar on the cover of The Hive Queen, by Joy Ang

HiveWings are omnivorous and eat animals that live on the savanna,[11] such as zebras,[15] wildebeest,[16] gazelle,[17] lions,[5] and antelope.[18] HiveWings also eat confections, such as honey drops and nectar,[19][11] as well as vegetables grown in the Hive greenhouses.[11] Sliced avocados were jokingly mentioned by Cricket.[20]

Cricket stated that HiveWings do not like to eat most reptiles, such as lizards or snakes, because they believe they may be related to dragons.[21] They also drink tea[20] and coffee.[22] In The Hive Queen, Cricket recalled a drink that tasted like lime,[23] and one that smelled like coconut.[24] Cricket has been mentioned to smell like cinnamon,[25] and to have breath that smelled like apples.[26]

Additionally, the Hive on the cover of The Hive Queen depicts a shop selling sharks, implying that sharks or other marine life may also be part of the HiveWing diet. Another shop on the cover appears to be selling mounds of herbs in baskets.

Abilities

Wasp's tail stinger from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang

According to the Pantalan dragon guide, the HiveWings' powers vary from dragon to dragon, but many do not have any powers.[27] These abilities are genetic and can be passed down.[28] HiveWing powers include sharp stingers extending from their wrists or claws, venom in their teeth, claws or stingers that is usually fatal, though it is not dangerous until the dragon is around two years old,[29] a paralyzing toxin known as nerve poison[30] that can immobilize targets in their claws or tail stinger, spraying boiling acid from a stinger on their tails,[29] and emitting a horrible stench said to smell like dead rotting things pickled in sulfur.[31] Some guards were assumed by Blue to be able to shoot poisonous darts from their tails.[32]

Swordtail described the HiveWings' paralyzing toxin as "fire burning every nerve in your body", and "all you want to do is run or fly or even blink, but you cannot move a single muscle until the toxin wears off".[33] A dragon paralyzed by HiveWing venom can be "unparalyzed" when given a strong stimulant.[34] Similar to SilkWings, HiveWings have a precise internal clock which was described to keep their days on schedule and warn them when the rainy season is coming.[35]

Wasp could control the mind of any HiveWing whom she had injected with the breath of evil, which was kept in her off-limits, personal greenhouse garden.[36] HiveWings had pure white eyes[37] when under the mind-control and moved in eerie unison.[38] Katydid describes the feeling as having an unstoppable urge to do what the queen commands them to do, similar to being hypnotized.[39]

Pre-Tree Wars

The Book of Clearsight from A Guide to the Dragon World, by Joy Ang

When the HiveWings first became their own tribe, they coexisted peacefully with the other Pantalan tribes.[40]

Before the Tree Wars, HiveWings lived in the forests of Pantala with a preference for cliffs and caves.[11] It was originally believed that there was a list of HiveWings who inherited the throne in the Book of Clearsight,[41] but this was a lie that only the queen knew about. In actuality, HiveWing queens would choose their successor.[42] Even before the Tree Wars, HiveWing books left out the fact that the HiveWing tribe was created from Clearsight having dragonets with several BeetleWings and that HiveWings and SilkWings are related. The two tribes used to be able to intermingle until Scarab's great-great-grandmother ordered for it to stop. Scarab also noted that her great-great-grandmother was likely the queen who removed the information about Clearsight marrying BeetleWings from HiveWing history books.[43]

The HiveWing queen would meet with the SilkWing and LeafWing queen every few moons to smooth out disputes.[44]

Post-Tree Wars

HiveWings live in cities known as Hives that were formerly ruled by Queen Wasp and her female relatives. They were first-class citizens in their society, above the SilkWings. Wasp's relatives ruled the other Hives around the continent and held the title of lady rather than princess. The queen outranked the ladies, but according to Morpho, the queen did not mind-control them to give them the illusion of control.[45]

HiveWing schools required dragonets to specialize in a subject at a young age. They would get a basic education at academies before continuing their specialized education at one of the nine Hive universities. For most dragonets, their career path was guided by their parents.[46] Each Hive had a university that specialized in a different career set.[47]

It was difficult for HiveWings to get a divorce because they needed permission from the queen in order to do so.[48] If the queen allowed a HiveWing couple to get divorced, they had to go through a whole separation request process that was difficult.[48] It was also considered strongly forbidden for a HiveWing and a SilkWing to be together.[4]

HiveWings utilized SilkWings as servants, exploiting them for personal benefits in various roles such as cooks, butlers, and secretaries. Servants followed their mistress.[49] HiveWings from Jewel Hive owned SilkWing servants as an accessory, often striving to make them look more extravagant than the others. They often made them stand in windows just to look pretty or parade them around.[50]

Names

HiveWings are named after a variety of insects, such as different species of bees, wasps, ants, beetles, weevils, crickets, and mantids. They may also be named after annelids, such as Earthworm, or after insect larvae, such as Bloodworm. HiveWings may also be named after arachnid species, in the case of Vinegaroon.
