— Hazel before the journey to Pyrrhia, The Poison Jungle

Hazel is a female LeafWing princess who was introduced in The Poison Jungle. When Queen Sequoia was under the control of the othermind, Hazel temporarily served as the queen of the LeafWings. Her last known whereabouts were in Sanctuary after moving to Pyrrhia with the other Pantalan refugees.

Description

Hazel has green scales,[2] green wings,[3] large brown eyes, and deft, dark green claws.[1]

Personality

Hazel enjoys reading and making books, as she was always putting together her own creations[1] or reading others'.[4] She was shown to be critical of the shoddy binding on the Book of Clearsight,[5] but also carefree and humorous at a point.[6] Hazel is kind and smart, as well as an able-minded and considerate leader who genuinely cares for her suffering tribe.[7] She is regal and poised towards her subjects, with sufficient training from Sequoia on becoming a good queen.

Biography

The Lost Continent Prophecy

The Poison Jungle

Hazel was first seen sewing sheets of speckled paper together to make a book on Queen Sequoia's throne. She was ordered off the throne by her great-grandmother and was confused if she was allowed to talk to Sundew normally. Hazel, Willow, and Sundew went to see the new strangers, who turned out to be Tsunami, Turtle, and Io. The three spent the rest of the night in a pile of leaves in Hazel's room. Upon waking up, Sundew noticed Hazel perched in her hammock, reading a book. She asked if they were late to see Queen Sequoia, to which Hazel responded that Sequoia would call them when she was ready, going back to reading. Willow asked if Hazel wanted to come with her and Sundew to take breakfast to the visitors, but Hazel declined, telling them that she was at a really good part in her book.

Hazel arrived while Sundew and Willow were visiting Tsunami and Turtle, asking them if they could hear the roaring of Commander Belladonna.

Hazel witnessed Queen Sequoia's telling of the Legend of the Hive. She was horrified and wanted to fight with the other LeafWings, but Sequoia put her in charge of the SapWings while she goes to war, not wanting to lose her great-granddaughter.

After Sundew, Willow, Cricket, Mandrake, Nettle, and Bumblebee returned from the Eye of the jungle with the "heart of salvation," Hazel fed the root to Inchworm. When it seemed to work, she sent Sundew, Willow, and Mandrake back to Queen Sequoia, who was preparing for war against Wasp and the HiveWings.

Hazel uncovered Clearsight's map to Pyrrhia by cutting open the Book of Clearsight, despite Cricket's confusion. She became the new queen of the LeafWings in her great-grandmother's place and led them across the chain of islands leading to Pyrrhia.
The Dangerous Gift

After arriving in the Ice Kingdom, Hazel pleaded to Queen Snowfall for shelter. When Snowfall's IceWing army was revealed, Hazel agreed to move on to the Kingdom of Sand. On the way there, Hazel attempted to engage Snowfall in a discussion about being a young queen, and they traded stories of how the previous queens were lost.

Sundew briefly mentioned Hazel when Cobra Lily suggested the idea of Sundew becoming queen of both the LeafWings and the SilkWings, which Sundew strongly disagreed with.

When it came time for the Pantalans to leave for Sanctuary after temporarily resting at Jerboa III's island, Hazel leaned wistfully against the palm trees and gazed up at their swaying leaves. During the journey, Snowfall caught up with Hazel and asked about the LeafWings who were left behind in Pantala. Hazel tried not to cry, explaining how most of them were presumably left to be mind-controlled by the breath of evil. Snowfall then asked Moonwatcher whether the latter had received any visions about Pantala, in which Moon replied by restating the prophecy. Hazel wondered about life in Pyrrhia, in which Lynx intervened to answer those questions.

Later, Hazel took part in organizing the Pantalan refugees when they arrived at Sanctuary. She also attended the Pyrrhian queens summit to settle Moon's prophecy and she was mentioned frequently afterwards.

Hazel had decided to stay in Sanctuary and chose Sundew as the LeafWing representative. She most likely allowed Cricket and Luna to go back to Pantala as the HiveWing and SilkWing representatives as well.

Field Guides

A Guide to the Dragon World
Hazel was depicted in a portrait with Sequoia at the beginning of the LeafWing chapter of the guide. Later in the chapter, Hazel told Cricket about surviving in the Poison Jungle. Along with other LeafWings, Hazel shared her favorite book, a book titled Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.

Relationships

Hazel has a very close bond to her great-grandmother, seeing her as a kind of motherly figure. She takes after Sequoia when addressing her subjects and giving them order, showing that Hazel looks up to her great-grandmother, and thinks of her as a good queen. Sequoia trusted Hazel to take on the responsibilities of being queen in her absence.[8]

Hazel and Snowfall are shown to have formed a friendship bond. Snowfall was happy when Hazel called her a friend. Hazel and Snowfall somewhat relate to one another, both being quite young and inexperienced queens. Hazel thinks that she could learn a couple things from Snowfall, and that Snowfall could learn some from her.

Sundew and Hazel have only met each other recently, but Sundew is thought to think kindly about the queen, and it is thought Hazel does also. Hazel is a bit of a calming influence for her. Sundew believed that Hazel was the rightful queen of the LeafWings and does not try to take that leadership from Hazel.[9]

Hazel is quite close to Willow, so close that Sundew even worried that Willow might have feelings for the princess, but Willow assured Sundew that they were just friends.[10]
