Dune was a pale, yellow male SandWing scarred by Princess Burn, and as a result, Dune would never fly or walk correctly again. He and Six-Claws helped each other find Princess Blaze when she went missing. After that, they became close friends. He was a former member of the Outclaws, but he joined the Talons of Peace as guardian of the five dragonets. Before becoming a Talon, Dune served for Burn in the War of SandWing Succession. He was killed by Queen Scarlet when the SkyWings found the cave where the Dragonets of Destiny were hidden. Before killing him, Queen Scarlet declared him useless, snapping his neck and effectively ending his life. He was also one of the dragons wanted by Thorn, for he had been the one who had stolen Sunny's egg. While raising the dragonets, he also wore a rock key around his neck, which released a mechanism that allows the boulder blocking the cave from the outside world to open.
Dune was an adult male SandWing who was introduced in The Dragonet Prophecy. He was formerly a major of Burn's army and later a member of the Outclaws before eventually joining the Talons of Peace. He served as one of the guardians of the dragonets, tasked with teaching them hunting, alongside Kestrel and Webs. He was killed by Ex-Queen Scarlet after he attempted to protect the dragonets of destiny from her.

Sunny
Unlike the other guardians, Dune didn't seem to dislike Sunny, perhaps because she's a SandWing like him. He also thinks that Sunny isn't as big a problem to the prophecy as Glory is, as he tells the other guardians that he "isn't worried about Sunny" and that they "followed the prophecy's instructions." She seemed to like Dune the best out of the guardians and called on him for help in times of need. She was devastated when Scarlet killed Dune.

Six-Claws
Six-Claws
Dune met Six-Claws in Deserter. Six-Claws was apparently mad by Burn's treatment of her soldiers so much that he left the army along with Dune himself, though on different paths.
After Six-Claws aided Dune in his recruitment to the SandWing army, Dune grinned at him as if Six-Claws were his new best friend.W3q They remained friends for several years, and were paired together for everything, by everyone. "I guess minding dragonets runs in the family. But I hope I don't have to do it for the rest of my life. Dragonets are so aggravating. I want to be a soldier! I want to fight in battles and do glorious things and be a hero! What do you want to do?"
— Dune to Six-Claws, Deserter

Dune was an adult male SandWing who was introduced in The Dragonet Prophecy. He was formerly a major of Burn's army and later a member of the Outclaws before eventually joining the Talons of Peace. He served as one of the guardians of the dragonets, tasked with teaching them hunting, alongside Kestrel and Webs. He was killed by Ex-Queen Scarlet after he attempted to protect the dragonets of destiny from her.

Description

Dune had extraordinarily[1] powerful sandy-yellow wings and flashing black eyes.[2] He was large[3] and bigger than Scarlet.[4] One of his forelegs, as well as his right wing, were badly injured in combat against IceWing soldiers, with the formerly frozen parts of his wing having been snapped off, leaving only misshapen, blackened ruin. His wing was further destroyed when Burn sliced through its tendons and membranes,[5] leaving a long scar running through it[6] and causing it to trail crookedly beside his body.[4] He also lost his foot, leaving only a foreleg stump,[3] and he wore an oddly shaped stone around his neck that served as a key to unlock the boulder that blocked the cave entrance.[7]

Personality

As a young dragon, Dune was eager,[8] enthusiastic,[9] and defensive,[10] and he wanted to be a hero and a fighter. His eyes became bleak and haunted after his injury.[11]

By the beginning of The Dragonet Prophecy, Dune was grouchy, tough, and did not show much fondness towards any the dragonets except for Sunny. He was described to hate everything.[12] He was also not as outwardly cruel as Kestrel, having spent extra time to ensure that Starflight understood particular topics.[13] He bravely protected them when they were found by Scarlet, despite his injuries, ultimately leading to his death.

Biography

Pre-Series
Along with Kestrel, Webs, Asha, and Hvitur, Dune was ordered to steal an egg to fulfill the Dragonet Prophecy. During this time, he resided in the Scorpion Den, and Thorn trusted him with the location of her egg to help guard it. When Dune learned it was due to hatch on the brightest night, he stole it, destroying Thorn's trust in him. In The Brightest Night, it was revealed to the dragonet stolen, Sunny, that he had been wanted by Thorn for years after.

The Dragonet Prophecy

The Dragonet Prophecy

After the loss of Hvitur and Asha, only him, Kestrel, and Webs were left to raise Clay, Tsunami, Sunny, Starflight, and Glory.

As a guardian, Dune taught the dragonets skills of hunting and survival. He tended to be harsh on Glory, though not more so than Kestrel. He was kind to Sunny and made sure to teach her more due to her "disabilities." After the visit from Morrowseer, he was reluctant to kill Glory, although not as much as Webs, who had been horrified about the idea of having to kill her and was the first to deny participation in her murder due to it being him who had stolen her egg.

Scarlet killing Dune
Later, Clay and Tsunami escaped the cave and accidentally led Queen Scarlet and her soldiers to the dragonets. During the attack, Dune was pinned down by Scarlet. She sliced open his foreleg, and violently snapped his neck, killing him. Sunny sobbed over his dead body, begging him to "wake up." Clay recalled Dune's death multiple times after that.
The Lost Heir
Webs mentioned Dune's death when recounting how he and the other guardians failed to prevent the dragonets of destiny from escaping to Nautilus, Cirrus, and Crocodile.
The Hidden Kingdom
Glory recalled the abuse she had suffered from Dune and Kestrel, and wondered if that was why she preferred not to be touched. Later, Glory noticed several SandWings with permanent injuries at Blaze's fortress and thought of Dune, wondering what side of the war he had been on before joining the Talons of Peace.
The Dark Secret
While Starflight was dreaming about reading a scroll about where the dragonets of destiny could be and ideas of how they can end the war, Dune, along with the other guardians, burst into the study cave to take the scroll away from Starflight.
The Brightest Night
Thorn mentioned that Dune had been the one to take Sunny's egg, which had been buried in the sand near the Scorpion Den. Only Thorn and Dune had known where the egg was. Thorn, in the process of finding Dune, put up wanted posters all over the Scorpion Den (before she knew that he had been killed). When Sunny told Thorn that Dune was dead, she violently ripped up his and Morrowseer's wanted posters. Sunny mentioned Dune again in the epilogue as one of the dragons who had never gotten to see the end of the war.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Moon Rising
Dune was indirectly mentioned when Clay told Kinkajou that, back then, the guardians had brought live prey for the dragonets to practice hunting without having to leave the cave.
Darkness of Dragons
Dune was one of the dragons that Thorn asked Cobra to find. Cobra stated that there was not a trace of him anywhere.

Winglets

Deserter

Dune was first shown as a four-year-old dragonet in a classroom, and he wanted to help Six-Claws find Blaze. Dune was the one to spot her heading towards an oncoming sandstorm. He helped direct Six-Claws back to the fortress and defended him when other dragons complained about Six-Claws. Char offered to admit Dune and Six-Claws to the army to train and become a soldier, and Dune eagerly agreed. When Queen Oasis was killed, he and Six-Claws chose to fight on Burn's side.

In a battle with Blaze's forces, he was injured by frostbreath on his wing and foot. The doctors said that he would recover, but Burn maimed his wings to punish Six-Claws' disobedience, which resulted in Dune's permanent disability. Soon after, Six-Claws and a nurse named Kindle carried him in blankets to the Scorpion Den.

Relationships

Kestrel was a close friend of Dune and worked with him in the Talons of Peace to raise the dragonets of destiny.[14]

After Six-Claws aided Dune in his recruitment to the SandWing army, Dune grinned at him as if Six-Claws were his new best friend.[15] They remained friends for several years, and were paired together for everything, by everyone. Six-Claws smiled at and encouraged Dune.[1] Dune stayed by Six-Claws' side all throughout the War of SandWing Succession,[16] and when Dune was injured, Six-Claws carried him back to their campsite and reassured his friend.[17] Burn used Six-Claws' care for Dune against him, despite Six-Claws' efforts to defend him.[18] Dune's safety was one of the main reasons for Six-Claws deserting Burn's army.[11]

Dune had a connection with Sunny as they were both SandWings.[19]

Dune was considered by Thorn to be the only friend she could trust to keep Sunny's egg safe; however, he broke Thorn's trust when he stole Sunny's egg for the prophecy.[20] Despite this, he named Sunny one of the names Thorn mentioned liking when talking about possible names for her dragonet.[21]

Quotes

"I guess minding dragonets runs in the family. But I hope I don't have to do it for the rest of my life. Dragonets are so aggravating. I want to be a soldier! I want to fight in battles and do glorious things and be a hero! What do you want to do?"
― to Six-Claws (Deserter)

"Whoa. Is that the princess? Why would she be out in the dunes by herself? By all the lizards, she is going to get crushed by that sandstorm."
― to Six-Claws about Blaze (Deserter)

"He didn't take her out there! He saw her out there alone and rescued her, that's what he did!"
― to Blister, about Six-Claws saving Blaze (Deserter)

"Now, can we get back to talking about how amazing I am, please?"
― to Six-Claws (Deserter)

"She said I have more promise than any officer she's ever seen. [...] She said I have extraordinarily strong wings for a SandWing — almost like a SkyWing's! She said I'd be commanding armies of my own in no time."
― to Six-Claws, about General Needle (Deserter)

"That it's stupid. And we were stupid for being loyal in the first place, and now we're paying for it. I'm paying for it. There's no point to any of this."
― to Six-Claws (Deserter)

"I'm not worried about Sunny. We followed the prophecy instructions. It's not our fault she's the way she is. But the RainWing — He's not going to like that."
― to Kestrel and Webs, about Morrowseer (The Dragonet Prophecy, page 32)

"It's not natural, that much loyalty in a dragon. Especially to dragons outside your own tribe."
― to Kestrel and Webs, about Clay (The Dragonet Prophecy, page 54)

"These dragonets are sacred. They're the dragonets of destiny. You can't have them!"
― to Scarlet (The Dragonet Prophecy, page 113)

Trivia

 • While Dune's parents were both teachers, Dune expressed to Six-Claws that he had no desire to become a teacher himself.[2]
 • Despite canonically missing a foreleg, the graphic novel depicts him with all limbs intact.[22][23]
