}}Clay is a young male MudWing and the main protagonist of The Dragonet Prophecy. Clay was born from a blood-red MudWing egg, so he has fireproof scales. It is implied he has a romantic interest in Peril, who is also known to like him back. He loves his students and teaches Herbs and Healing at Jade Mountain Academy, the school he helped found alongside the other Dragonets of Destiny.  He is considered the bigwings to the Dragonets of Destiny (although he is the oldest and biggest of his biological siblings, they are currently led by Reed, the second oldest of them).

Clay is a strong, broad, and muscular MudWing with thick brown scales that seem richer and deeper when in direct sunlight, like the bark of a healthy mahogany tree with undertones of glowing amber and golden colors. He is large and powerfully built and has warm hazel-tinted brown eyes. He has a flat, wide snout and thick, powerful jaws. His horns are small and dark brown as well. Clay was also said to have very large talons and thick brown claws, as well as a large sloping back topped with dark brown spines. Ever since Peril burned the venom of a dragonbite viper out of his veins to save his life, he has a large burn scar on his right hind thigh and walks with a limp, as the wound was too deep and large for his fireproof scales to heal over completely.

Clay is the son of Cattail, who sold his egg for two cows to the Talons of Peace without hesitation. Clay was brought to the hidden cave by the MudWing guardian, Asha, a member of the Talons of Peace who was also his aunt. Sadly, Asha died shortly after bringing him due to injuries she received when she'd been caught in a battle between the armies of Blister and Blaze. Clay was the first Dragonet of Destiny to hatch and tried to help break the rest of the dragonets' eggs open. It's instinctual for the first of a MudWing clutch to hatch to help the others out of their shells by breaking them, but with Asha being dead and unable to explain this, the rest of the guardians misunderstood this action and thought he was trying to kill them, so Clay was thrown into the river until the rest of the eggs hatched.

Clay grew up with the other Dragonets of Destiny, Tsunami, Glory, Sunny, and Starflight under a large mountain in a cave in the Sky Kingdom. They were cared for by Kestrel, Dune, and Webs, members of the Talons of Peace, although they had low opinions of their guardians, calling their raising "imprisonment." Clay had trouble in battle training with Kestrel, who periodically attacked him with fire and complained about how he was too gentle, demanding to see more of the 'vicious little monster' he had supposedly had been when he hatched, referring to his "eggshell-breaking" episode. When the dragonets were old enough, they were supposed to leave the cave and fulfill the prophecy. However, they all possessed a desire to escape their confined existence, excluding Sunny. One day, the deliverer of the prophecy, Morrowseer, visited the cave to inspect the dragonets.

The menacing NightWing decreed that Clay, Tsunami, and Starflight were worthy of staying, showing special favor toward Starflight, that Sunny was a possible candidate, and that Glory was an unworthy substitute for the deceased SkyWing mentioned in the prophecy. Clay eavesdropped on the guardians through a river that ran throughout the entire cave and, overheard that they were planning to have Kestrel kill Glory the next night by breaking her neck. Tsunami was chained as part of this plot, as she was the only one who could stop Kestrel from killing Glory. Knowing that time was running out, Clay escaped through the underground river. Glory hid by changing her scale pattern to match the rocks and stalactites in the cave, gaining more time. Risking his life, (as MudWings are only able to hold their breath for about an hour compared to SeaWings, who have gills and can breathe underwater infinitely), Clay managed to get reasonably far down the river, but he was then covered with a substance that started to dissolve his scales (probably sulfur or sulfuric acid). He was rescued from this unfortunate fate by Tsunami, who finally succeeded in escaping with the aid of Sunny and Starflight by melting the chain links with their combined fire breath. After catching up to Clay, the two swam through the cave filled with glowworms and toxic white substances until they burst outside, emerging from the waterfall that dropped at the cave entrance. This caused the two dragonets to start flying, or trying to fly, in Tsunami's case. After Clay got over the bout of excitement caused by his first flight, he noticed that Tsunami had rapidly fallen. Upon looking closer, Clay guessed one of her wings was dislocated, and this was the reason she was unable to fly properly. He barreled into a dive and sped towards her as fast as he could. He wasn't strong enough to stop her fall, but he was able to slow her down until they crashed into trees and thudded to the grassy ground.

Clay was unsurprisingly delighted by the mud that was bordering the banks of the river they had landed beside. After convincing Tsunami he could push the dislocated bone back into its socket, a scavenger had appeared in the clearing. It was holding a sword and a burlap sack. Upon further investigation, they found the sack contained a variety of jewels, gold, and jewelry. The duo then encountered Queen Scarlet of the SkyWings, who insisted they would return to her kingdom after she had a conversation with Clay and decided they could be useful. Knowing they had to get back to their friends still trapped in the cave, they had no choice but to injure the regal SkyWing by stabbing the scavenger's sword into the vulnerable spot on her tail. They managed to quickly escape before Scarlet found them and find their cave in able to free their friends shortly afterward, but were captured by the enraged Queen Scarlet, due to the smoke signal the remaining dragonets had set so that Tsunami and Clay could find the cave and free them.

Queen Scarlet challenged different prisoners against each other in gladiatorial style battles in her dreaded arena for her and her subjects' entertainment. If the prisoner won enough battles, she would pit them against her champion, Peril. Peril was invulnerable because of a rare birth defect that caused her to be born with too much fire. This meant that Peril would burn anything she touched, so she couldn't read or write and had to be extremely cautious around other dragons. Clay began to befriend Peril, strangely immune to her heat. Clay volunteered to stand in for Starflight after learning he was next to fight in the arena. Queen Scarlet sent Clay to face off Fjord of the IceWings, who managed to pin him down. Fjord was about to strike the killing blow with his deadly frost breath when Glory secretly shot acidic venom that dissolved his face, and Clay was victorious. Later on, he decided to hide Peril during Kestrel's trial in exchange for the knowledge of Sunny's location.

After the trial, Peril did not speak with him. That night Queen Scarlet had her ally, Princess Burn over. Clay got the prisoners to sing the song about the Dragonets of destiny, playing the tune wit a wire Peril accidentally burned through earlier to try and get her attention. Scarlet and Burn noticed the racket and Clay, Starflight, and Tsunami were taken to Peril’s room, where Peril helped them escape. With the help of Peril, Clay and his friends tried to escape, only to be betrayed by Peril herself. During this vain escape, he learned that his scales were impervious to fire.

The following day was Queen Scarlet's hatching day, so she set up bloody plans for her and Burn’s entertainment. The three confused dragonets (Starflight, Tsunami, and Clay) were taken to the balcony of the queens, on which Burn and Scarlet were seated on as well. He helplessly watched as Tsunami was forced to fight a mad SeaWing called Gill, who was later revealed to be her father. After Tsunami killed him, Clay was also forced to watch Starflight and Tsunami fight scavengers and IceWings. After Starlight was rescued by Morrowseer and the other NightWings, Clay was faced against Peril. He surprised her with his ability to fight back, and quickly pinned her, but wouldn't kill her. When Scarlet suggested Clay used what she thought was his venom, Glory shot venom from her front longest fangs at Burn, who shoved Scarlet in the way, and then a part of her face started to melt. They were then able to escape with Peril's help, and succeeded in rescuing Kestrel in the process, the action in which Clay and Sunny were the only supporters.

They finally managed to escape, and then they traveled to the Mud Kingdom to find Clay's parents. Clay was disappointed to find that his mother didn't care about him and sold him to the Talons of Peace in exchange for cows, but he found the group of his brothers and sisters, Reed, Marsh, Sora, Umber, and Pheasant (though one named Crane was killed in a recent battle, later found that it was Icicle who killed her) that he would have belonged with if he not been taken by the Talons of Peace. Finally, at peace with himself, Clay leaves with his friends in the search for Tsunami's parents.

Clay is an adult male MudWing and the main protagonist of The Dragonet Prophecy. Formerly a dragonet of destiny, he was also partially responsible for ending the War of SandWing Succession and is one of the five founders of Jade Mountain Academy, where he currently resides. He teaches herbs and healing, helps with battle training, and runs the prey center.

The Lost Heir
Description
For almost all of The Lost Heir, Clay is imprisoned with fellow Dragonets of Destiny Sunny, Starflight, and Glory by Queen Coral, chained by the ankles to a cave floor. When water levels rose due to a flood, he was willing to keep his friends away from the rising water by letting them sit on his back and stack on top of each other, showing the willingness to sacrifice his life to save them although MudWings can hold their breath for up to an hour. He was soon freed by Tsunami and they together sat in a dry cave and ate fish. When Blister arrived, she called him "the burly one." Clay wasn't seen later on in the book until the Summer Palace pavilion attack by the SkyWings. Clay was seen shielding Starflight and Sunny since his scales are immune to fire, surprising many of Burn's soldiers in the process.
Clay is muscular,TLH large,TBN burly,TLH and stocky,TDP with a sloping back,MR a thick,TDS lengthy neck,TDP a large,TLH broadTLH head, and white teeth.THK He is the largest of the dragonets of destiny,TDP and has a rumbly, deep,TDP warm voice.EP He also has fire-resistant,TLH mud-colored scales.TBN Clay's scales are a warmTBN brown in the shades ofTDP rich mahoganyL2 and tree bark,L2 along with undertones of glowing amber, clay,THK and gold glinting between and beneath his scales.TDP

The Hidden Kingdom
He has enormous feet and thickTDP brown claws,TDP as well as mud-colored,TDP massive,TLH strong brown wingsTDS and wide,TLH warm brown eyes.EP His right thigh is scarredDoD from a dragonbite viper laceration, and he has a permanent limp.TBN
After the dragonets escaped from the Kingdom of Sea, they headed to the Rainforest Kingdom, where Clay was knocked out with a sleeping dart to get to the RainWing village. While Glory was being toured around by Jambu, Starflight went right on torturing Clay in his sleep by rolling a melon in front of his nose and watching for Clay's reaction. Clay reacted by sighing in a really wistful way and his tongue lolled in and out of his mouth, later stating that the food in his dream "smelled like a melon" and that it was kind of weird. Later, when Glory became imprisoned by the NightWings (which happened since she was trying out an experiment), Clay and Deathbringer came to her rescue, and Clay helped fight off the NightWing guards near the tunnel to the rainforest by throwing red-hot coals at them. He, Glory, and a RainWing dragonet named Kinkajou ended up escaping successfully, while Deathbringer stayed behind with the NightWings. Clay later kept watching by the tunnels to the Night Kingdom alongside with Starflight. After Glory becomes queen, he came running back from the tunnel to tell her that Starflight was gone and falsely guessed that Starflight went to warn the NightWings.

The Dark Secret
Clay didn't make much of an appearance in The Dark Secret, as the book primarily centers around Starflight trapped on the Island. Starflight tried using a dreamvisitor (a blue gem-like object that was created by an animus to allow dragons to visit each other in dreams) to visit Clay in his dreams, but Clay didn't find Starflight popping into his dreams disturbing or even abnormal. He seemed to think Starlight was a part of the dream. Clay was seen to be eating or 'feasting' and was extremely pleased his siblings were there with him. However, when Starlight returned, Clay was the second dragonet of destiny to see him and was extremely pleased that Starlight has returned. When Starflight was injured by the volcanic explosion's fire, Clay sheltered him with his wings, protecting him and carrying him through the tunnel and out of danger, although the Nightwing still lost his sight.

The Brightest Night
Clay first appeared when he bursts out of the tunnel, shielding Starflight. Sunny mentioned that the Dragonets of Destiny may have been like the alternate dragonets if not for his kindness and support. He was not mentioned much more until Sunny returns to the Rainforest Kingdom. Clay met Sunny when he came out of the healers' hut and tackled her down, telling her how he knew that she would be alright. When the dragonets were in the stronghold, Burn ripped off the top of the box Blister sent her and pulled out a dragonbite viper. A second one jumped out and bites Burn, so she released the first viper. It headed toward Starflight, Fatespeaker, and Sunny, but Clay knocked them out of the way and got bitten instead. Black veins soon started spreading out all over his right thigh. Peril flew out of nowhere, said that "she would not let Clay die", and burned out the venom by placing her talons on the section of his leg that got bitten, removing the venom, and Clay survived, though he was left scarred and limping for the rest of his life.

Moon Rising
Clay serves as a sort of school monitor for the newly founded Jade Mountain Academy, shown in how he patrols the halls and stops at least two fights. He is in charge of the Prey Center at the school, which turns out be much more chaotic than he originally expected. He also appears to be a doctor, treating injured dragonets.

When the Dragonflame Cactus exploded in the History Cave, he runs inside to help get anyone out who may have been trapped. He is unharmed again due to his fire-resistant scales. At the assembly later he talks, but Moon wasn't listening to him in her search for the dragon that caused the explosion.

Escaping Peril
Clay appears in the first part of the book. He is supposed to retrieve Peril from her cave as soon as Queen Ruby leaves. Peril follows him as he and the others fly out to face Scarlet, and promises to help Queen Ruby. When Peril asks Clay what he wants her to do, he replies that she "should make her own choices". Later in the night, during an argument with Queen Ruby about whether or not they're able to trust Peril, Starflight reveals that Peril is in love with Clay and will likely kill everyone if she finds out that his feelings aren't mutual. Clay acts slightly embarrassed, but then changes the subject.

Talons of Power
Clay comes out to the landing area with Sunny to stop Darkstalker, where he asks if the NightWing is a monster and reading everybody's minds is nosy. He looks embarrassed, alarmed and confused at the same time when Darkstalker says his thoughts are "very kind about certain dragons," most likely meaning Peril, although this is yet to be confirmed. Later, Clay gathers dragons to tell them the story of Ruby's fight with Scarlet. Peril says that she talked to him and he hugs her, pleased with her as a whole. Qibli tells Peril that Clay likes her too, but "doesn't know quite what to do about it yet."

Darkness of Dragons
Clay first appears in the book teaching the herbs and healing class explaining his injury. Then he helps Qibli search for a weapon to break into the Scorpion Den to save one of Clay's students, Ostrich. Clay was showing the "weapon box" when Qibli complained about the limited selection of weapons, and that he'd be better off cutting his own throat and hanging himself from the alley wall. Clay then asks if Qibli really needs to be armed to visit his grandfather, Vulture. Straight after Clay said no to Qibli's question of having any poison, Winter appears, stating that he will not need any poison because he will be there, accompanying Qibli. After a bit of arguing, Winter spots a replica of Qibli's earring on Clay's ear. Clay then proceeds to say that they're very fashionable. Qibli attempts to persuade Winter to put one on but fails. In the epilogue, Clay and Peril talk and fly in the rain together, showing that Clay most likely returns the feelings that Peril has for him.

Personality
Personality
Clay is a sweet, caring, and protective dragon. He is seen as a bigwing by most of his friends due to his selflessness and kindness. He's willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, but he will stand up for himself and his loved ones at all costs, even willing to guard them with his own life. He's loyal to a fault, honest, open and would never intentionally hurt someone's feelings. He's also very patient and empathetic, as shown in Moon Rising when he calmly separates Pike and Carnelian during a heated argument. He also has a love for food that Sunny calls "adorable."
Clay is thoughtful,EP accidentally heroic,DoD and sounds kind no matter who he talks to.DoD He is earnest,TLH goofy,TLH loyal, sweet,TLH agreeable,TLH easily confused,TLH curious,TLH thick-skulled, and surprisingly dumb.TLH He rarely complains, except about being hungry,TLH though in a sweet, funny way, and takes a great liking to food.TLH He is trustworthy, and every thought he has is written all over his face.TLH Clay is challenged by academicsDoD and is sometimes slow to realize things.TLH Despite this, he teaches healingDoD and self-defenseDoD at Jade Mountain Academy, and appears to have a good understanding of anatomy.DoD He is responsible, protective, and cares about his students.EP Clay believes that prophecies are not instructions, but rather that they are hints towards the right direction and that it is a dragon's choice on what to do with those hints.TFoH

Relationships
Tsunami described him as being the heart of the dragonets of destiny and stated that they would not be able to fulfill the prophecy without him.TLHTFoH Clay loves his friends so deeply that he is always willing to die for them, EP though not so much as killing for them. Even as a young dragonet, he was willing to take the blame for his friends' mistakes and face Kestrel's punishments for them.TFoH Peril described his soul as a torch that never went out, burning clear all night long.EP Clay often smiles at most everybody.TLHDoD
Starflight
As with the other dragonets, Clay considers Starflight a brother and states that he dreams of being lectured by the NightWing. He took the dragonbite viper bite meant for Starflight and protected him when the volcano from the Fortress exploded.

Tsunami
Biography
Tsunami is one of Clay's close friends. She found and cured him when Clay got drenched in the white ooze in the underground river and his scales were burning with pain. She stabbed Scarlet's tail to give herself and Clay the opportunity to fly away from the SkyWing queen. Later, she calls Clay a "handsome idiot" and gives him a hint that Peril likes him, though it goes right over his head. Throughout the book, Tsunami often interjects when Clay talks about Glory and Sunny in front of Peril because she appears to understand that Peril gets jealous. After she and Clay escape from under the mountain, Clay notices how beautiful and shiny her scales were. In The Lost Heir, she states she had feelings for Clay and Starflight but had gotten over her crushes when she realized Clay thought of her as a sister and that Starflight was "too annoying.

|content = Clay's egg was sold to the Talons of Peace in exchange for two cows and brought to a hidden cave by his aunt Asha, where he was raised under the dragonets' guardians. Unfortunately, Asha died shortly after delivering him due to the injuries she received from a clash between the forces of Blister and Blaze. Clay was the first dragonet of destiny to hatch on the brightest night and tried to help break the rest of the dragonet's eggs open. It was instinctual for the first of a MudWing clutch to hatch to help the others out of their shells by breaking them, but with Asha being dead and unable to explain this, the rest of the guardians misunderstood this action and thought he was trying to kill them. Therefore, Clay was expelled into the river until the rest of the eggs hatched. Luckily, MudWings could hold their breath for an hour. Clay always felt bad for "attacking" the other dragonets of destiny as eggs and worried about his inner monster that Kestrel, one of The Dragonets' guardians, tried to pry out of him on a daily basis. Tsunami, the SeaWing in the Prophecy, said sarcastically, 'You big dragons are around to tell us about it all the time.' after biting Kestrel to defend Clay when Kestrel was being callous towards him.

Sunny
Clay grew up with the other dragonets of destiny, Tsunami, Glory, Sunny, and Starflight under a large mountain in the Sky Kingdom. They were raised by Kestrel, Dune, and Webs, members of the Talons of Peace, although they had low opinions of their guardians, calling the first six years of their life "imprisonment." Clay had trouble in battle training with Kestrel, who periodically attacked him with fire and complained about how he was too gentle, demanding to see more of the "vicious little monster" that she had supposedly seen in him when he hatched, referring to his eggshell-breaking episode. When the dragonets were old enough, they were supposed to leave the cave and fulfill the prophecy. However, they all possessed a desire to escape their confined existence, excluding Sunny. One day, the deliverer of the Dragonet Prophecy, Morrowseer, visited the cave to inspect the dragonets.
Sunny is like a little sister to Clay, and he treats her as such. When Clay decided to travel down the river under the mountain, Sunny said, "Don't you dare die!" Clay also wanted to go save Sunny when she was trapped in a cage in the Sky Kingdom. When Sunny wants to explain her idea about the darts in the RainWings' attack, she turns to Clay because she thinks he will listen. He seems to be the dragonet she confides in the most. Clay takes a poisonous viper bite to save Sunny's life and says he would do it over and over again if he could. Clay is one of the only dragons to actually take Sunny seriously, as shown when Clay paid attention to the "weird crab" Sunny found.

Glory
He decreed that Clay, Tsunami, and Starflight were worthy of staying, showing special favor toward Starflight, that Sunny was a possible candidate, and that Glory was an unworthy substitute for the deceased SkyWing mentioned in the prophecy. Clay eavesdropped on a talk between the guardians and Morrowseer through a river that ran throughout the entire cave and, overheard that they were planning to have Kestrel kill Glory the next night by snapping her neck. Tsunami was chained as part of this plot, as she was the only one who could stop Kestrel from killing Glory. Knowing that time was running out, Clay escaped through the underground river after a brief conversation about the possible consequences of doing so. Glory showed her friends her RainWing camouflage ability for the first time, changing her scales' colors to match the rocks and stalactites in the cave, buying more time. Risking his life, and relying on his ability to hold his breath for an hour, Clay managed to get far down the river, but he was then covered with a substance that started to dissolve his scales. He was rescued from this unfortunate fate by Tsunami, who had finally succeeded in escaping her chains with the aid of Sunny and Starflight's fire. After catching up to Clay, the two swam through the cave filled with glowworms and toxic sticky white substances until they burst outside, emerging from the waterfall that dropped at the cave entrance. He was not strong enough to stop her fall, but he was able to slow her down until they crashed into trees and thudded to the grassy ground.
Glory is also one of Clay's friends. He refers to her as beautiful once in the book, and feels bad about thinking that Glory was actually asleep when she was displayed as "artwork." When Glory comes into view after Kestrel said she's going to kill her, Clay twines his tail with hers. When Glory goes missing, Clay is very worried about her; in Escaping Peril, he was devastated when he believed she'd been killed by Scarlet.

Peril
Clay was unsurprisingly delighted by the mud that was bordering the banks of the river they had landed beside. After pushing Tsunami's dislocated bone back into its socket, a scavenger, Mushroom, appeared in the clearing. They managed to quickly escape before Scarlet found them and were able to find their cave and were able to free their friends shortly afterward, but were captured by the enraged Queen Scarlet, due to the smoke signal the remaining dragonets had set so that Tsunami and Clay could find the cave and free them.
Clay befriended Peril while trapped in the SkyWing arena by Ex-Queen Scarlet. They quickly became friends and Peril developed feelings for him because he was the only dragon that liked her the way she was. Queen Scarlet had only been using her for entertainment. After Clay fights Fjord, Peril brings hot mud to treat his scratches and wounds. He soon finds out that Scarlet ordered Peril not to talk to him, but she defies those orders. Peril seemed jealous of the other dragonets because she wanted Clay to herself; when she helps the dragonets escape and later betrays them, Clay touches her and discovers that he's immune to her firescales. This helps when he fights Peril against his will in the arena, leaving Peril to admit that she wanted to save him after Kestrel and for him to like her more than the other dragonets. She says she does not want to kill him, and Clay says she has to.

Their fight ends after Queen Scarlet is sprayed with Glory's venom, and they escape. Glory says Peril might be the missing SkyWing, but that is proved false. Peril chose to stay behind and distract the other SkyWings from the escaping dragonets, where she states that's all she's good for. But then Clay delivers the award-winning line when he finally gets it, saying that it's not all she's good for and giving her a dragon equivalent of a hug. Peril leaves but sees the dragonets again in The Brightest Night and Moon Rising. Peril saves Clay's life in the fifth book by burning out the dragonbite viper's venom in his thigh. In the sixth book, he invites her to the Jade Mountain Academy. In Talons of Power (Book), Qibli tells Peril that Clay likes her but just doesn't know what to do about it. In Darkness of Dragons, Peril and Clay go flying together. In this scene, it is likely that Clay reciprocates Peril's feelings for him, although the ending is vague.
Queen Scarlet pitted different prisoners against each other in gladiatorial-styled battles in her dreaded arena for her and her subjects' entertainment. If the prisoner won enough battles, she would put them against her champion, Peril. Peril was invulnerable because of a rare birth defect that caused her to be born with too much fire. This meant that Peril would burn anything she touched, so she could not read or write and had to be extremely cautious around other dragons. Clay began to befriend Peril and was strangely immune to her heat.

Siblings
After the trial, Peril did not speak with him. That night Queen Scarlet had her ally, Burn over. To get Peril's attention, he used a wire Peril had accidentally burned through earlier, dragging it across his other wires to create a sound. He started playing The Dragonets Are Coming, and soon the other prisoners joined in. Scarlet and Burn noticed the racket and Clay, Starflight, and Tsunami were taken to Peril's room, where Peril helped them escape. With the help of Peril, Clay and his friends tried to escape, only to be betrayed by Peril herself. During this vain escape, he learned that his scales were impervious to fire when he touched Peril without thinking. When they were put back into Peril's room, Starflight explained something he once read about MudWings from blood-red eggs being impervious to fire.
Reed, Marsh, Crane, Pheasant, Sora and Umber are Clay's siblings, who he met when he tried to visit his mother. Glory went with Clay disguised as a MudWing. Crane died before Clay came back. If his egg was not taken by the Talons of Peace, Clay would have become the bigwings. So instead, Reed became the bigwings. Clay is shown to appreciate this because he's glad to have Reed protecting his siblings when he can't. When Starflight used his dreamvisitor, he saw Clay dream about his siblings. Starflight said, "More dragons we have to save in this war." He seemed shocked and saddened when Sora set a bomb off in the school.

Students
The following day was Queen Scarlet's hatching day, so she set up bloody plans for her and Burn's entertainment. The three confused dragonets (Starflight, Tsunami, and Clay) were taken to the balcony of the queens, on which Burn and Scarlet were seated as well. He watched helplessly as Tsunami was forced to fight a mad SeaWing named Gill, who was later revealed to be her father. After Tsunami killed him, Clay was also forced to watch Starflight and Tsunami fight scavengers and IceWings. After Starflight was rescued by Morrowseer and the other NightWings, Clay was faced against Peril. He surprised her with his ability to fight back, and quickly pinned her down, but would not kill her. When Scarlet suggested Clay used what she thought was his venom, Glory shot venom from her front longest fangs at Burn, who shoved Scarlet in the way. The venom hit Scarlet in the side of her face, causing it to melt. They were then able to escape with Peril's help, and succeeded in rescuing Kestrel in the process, an action in which Clay and Sunny were the only supporters.
Clay cares about the students at Jade Mountain Academy and their safety. He is regarded as a hero among them due to his limp caused by his wound vie dragonbite Viper.

Family Tree
They finally managed to escape, and then they traveled to the Mud Kingdom to find Clay's parents. Clay was disappointed to find that his mother did not care about him and sold him to the Talons of Peace in exchange for at least two cows, but he found the group of his brothers and sisters, Reed, the bigwings, Marsh, Sora, Umber, and Pheasant. They told him that they had another sister named Crane, who was killed in a recent battle. It was later revealed that Icicle was the dragon who killed her. He would have belonged with them if his egg had not been taken by the Talons of Peace. Finally, at peace with himself, Clay left with his friends in the search for Tsunami's parents, vowing to his brothers and sisters that he would return to them, once the war was over.

Quotes
For most of the time when the dragonets were at the Summer Palace, Queen Coral imprisoned Clay with his fellow dragonets of destiny excluding Tsunami, chained by his ankles to a cave floor. When water levels rose due to a flood, he was willing to keep his friends away from the rising water by letting them sit on his back and stack on top of each other. He was soon freed by Tsunami and they together sat in a dry cave and ate food. When Blister arrived, she called him 'the burly one.' Clay was not seen later on in the book until Auklet hatched and the dragonets of destiny were imprisoned. When the Summer Palace pavilion attack by the SkyWings occurred, Clay was seen shielding Starflight and Sunny since his scales are immune to fire, surprising many of Burn's soldiers in the process.
"I'm-uh-open to suggestions." - To Sunny when he was bitten with the dragonbite viper.

While Glory was being shown around the village by Jambu, Starflight amused himself by messing with Clay in his sleep by rolling a melon in front of his nose and watching for Clay's reaction. Clay reacted by sighing wistfully and his tongue lolled in and out of his mouth, later stating that the food in his dream "smelled like a melon" and that it was kind of weird. Later, when Glory became imprisoned by the NightWings, Clay and Deathbringer came to her rescue, and Clay helped fight off the NightWing guards near the tunnel to the rainforest by throwing red-hot coals at them. He, Glory, and a RainWing dragonet named Kinkajou ended up escaping successfully, while Deathbringer stayed behind with the NightWings. Clay later stood guard by the tunnels to the island with Starflight. After Glory became queen, he came back from the tunnel to tell her that Starflight was gone and falsely guessed that Starflight went to warn the NightWings.

When Morrowseer was taking him to see Mastermind, Starflight heard footsteps behind him and hoped that Clay or Glory was coming to rescue him. Later, Starflight tried using a dreamvisitor, an animus-touched gem that allowed the user to visit other's dreams, to visit Clay in his dreams, but Clay did not find Starflight popping into his dreams disturbing or even abnormal. He seemed to think Starlight was a part of the dream. Clay was seen to be eating or "feasting" and was extremely pleased because his siblings were there with him. When Starlight returned to the Rainforest, Clay was the second dragonet of destiny to see him and was more than happy to see his best friend/brother back safely. When Starflight was injured by the volcanic explosion's fire, Clay sheltered him with his wings, protecting him and carrying him through the tunnel and out of danger, although the NightWing still lost his sight. The lava still burned Clay, and the fact that he risked all of that pain to save Starflight shows, again, his willingness to endure intense pain or death for his friends.

He seems to be the dragonet she confides in and trusts the most.THK Clay took a poisonous viper bite to save Sunny's life and says he would do it over and over again if he could.TBN He is one of the only dragons to take Sunny seriously, as shown when Clay paid attention to a "weird crab" Sunny found in the underground river.TDP

"Wow. No wonder I've always felt ordinary." - When Morrowseer says the Dragonets of Destiny are ordinary.
Tsunami
Tsunami is among Clay's closest friends. He considered her brave and tough like a hero should be.TDP She called Clay a "handsome idiot" and gave him a hint that Peril likes him, but he did not understand.TDP Tsunami often interjects when Clay talks about Glory and Sunny in front of Peril because she appeared to understand that Peril gets jealous.TDP In The Lost Heir, she stated she had feelings for Clay but had gotten over her crush when she realized Clay thought of her as a sister.TLH She was also the second one to hatch, and the first egg Clay tried to help hatch.TDP

" Wasn't enormous. That was the smallest pig in the whole world."- To Sunny

"I'd die to save you and Starflight over and over if I had to." - To Sunny after saving her, Fatespeaker, and Starflight from the Dragonbite Viper.

"I volunteer, I'm a world champion at sitting on my friends." - When Glory was told to sleep, and that if she didn't, she would be sat on.

Trivia
*Clay has the desire to eat many different types of foods and enjoys trying new types, a common trait among MudWings.
**Clay appears to have a liking for more meaty meals. In The Dragonet Prophecy, he loves cows. In The Hidden Kingdom, Blaze wants to plan a party with the Dragonets of Destiny and offers Clay a camel. Glory then assumes that Clay would love to be offered a camel.
**His favourite food are big animals like hippos and cows.
**Clay was actually dreaming about food when Starflight visited him in The Dark Secret.
*Clay sometimes dreams about Starflight giving him lectures.
*Clay seems to be skilled in first-aid as shown in The Lost Heir and Moon Rising. He also teaches Herbs and Healing at Jade Mountain Academy.
*Clay, Tsunami, and Sunny are the only original Dragonets of Destiny who have met their mothers.
*Clay is the sixth dragon to appear in the series, the second MudWing, and the first dragonet.
*In the annotated version of The Dragonet Prophecy, Tui revealed that she had originally wanted him to have a crush on Glory, but decided that didn't work at all.
*Clay knows of Peril's crush on him, and Qibli says that Clay likes her back but doesn't know how to feel about it.
*Clay never did truly believe in the powers of the NightWings.
*Clay currently has a limp in his leg resulting from Peril saving his life from a Dragonbite Viper’s venom by burning it out with her firescales.
**Clay is the second dragon known to be bitten by a Dragonbite Viper and the only dragon known to have survived the bite.
*Clay has displayed his concern for the safety of young dragonets, such as the students attending Jade Mountain Academy.
*Clay, alongside Starflight, are the only Dragonets of Destiny whose lineage past their parents is unknown.
*Clay is the only Dragonet of Destiny who doesn't have green eyes.
*The orange-brown dragonet in Moon's vision in Moon Rising may be the future dragonet of Peril and Clay; however, no clear evidence has confirmed this.
*It is very likely that Clay loves Peril just like she loves him throughout the series and knows of her love for him. This is mostly displayed during the epilogue of Darkness of Dragons in Peril's point of view, and when Peril left at the end of The Dragonet Prophecy.
*Clay is named after a real-life material of the same name, which is a stiff, sticky fine-grained earth.
*Clay is the second known dragon to have survived being burned by Peril, Kestrel being the first and Prince Winter, the third.
*Tui has said that Clay was one of the easiest characters to write just because she adores him, and she says "affable/kindhearted/loyal/hungry is exactly my type of hero".
*Clay is one of the five dragons whose cover does not match the book description. The others are Tsunami, Anemone, Qibli, and Blue.
*In The Dragonet Prophecy (Graphic Novel) cover, his eyes are yellow when in the book they are hazel.

"I'd like to be something more than alive. I'd like to be the kind of dragon she doesn't think I am — the kind they write prophecies about. That dragon who would save her no matter how awful she is."
— Clay to Glory and Tsunami about saving Kestrel, The Dragonet Prophecy

Clay is an adult male MudWing and the main protagonist of The Dragonet Prophecy. Formerly a dragonet of destiny, he was also partially responsible for ending the War of SandWing Succession and is one of the five founders of Jade Mountain Academy, where he currently resides. He teaches herbs and healing, helps with battle training, and runs the prey center.

Description

Clay is muscular,[1] large,[2] burly,[3] and stocky,[4] with a sloping back,[5] a thick,[6] lengthy neck,[7] a large,[8] broad[3] head, and white teeth.[9] He is the largest of the dragonets of destiny,[10] and has a rumbly, deep,[11] warm voice.[12] He also has fire-resistant,[13] mud-colored scales.[14] Clay's scales are a warm[15] brown in the shades of[16] rich mahogany[17] and tree bark,[18] along with undertones of glowing amber, clay,[19] and gold glinting between and beneath his scales.[16]

He has enormous feet and thick[20] brown claws,[16] as well as mud-colored,[21] massive,[22] strong brown wings[23] and wide,[24] warm brown eyes.[25] His right thigh is scarred[26] from a dragonbite viper laceration, and he has a permanent limp.[27]

Personality

Clay is thoughtful,[25] accidentally heroic,[28] and sounds kind no matter who he talks to.[29] He is earnest,[30] goofy,[31] loyal, sweet,[32] agreeable,[33] easily confused,[34] curious,[35] thick-skulled, and surprisingly dumb.[36] He rarely complains, except about being hungry,[3] though in a sweet, funny way, and takes a great liking to food.[37] He is trustworthy, and every thought he has is written all over his face.[31] Clay is challenged by academics[38] and is sometimes slow to realize things.[39] Despite this, he teaches healing[40] and self-defense[41] at Jade Mountain Academy, and appears to have a good understanding of anatomy.[26] He is responsible, protective, and cares about his students.[42] Clay believes that prophecies are not instructions, but rather that they are hints towards the right direction and that it is a dragon's choice on what to do with those hints.[43]

Tsunami described him as being the heart of the dragonets of destiny and stated that they would not be able to fulfill the prophecy without him.[44][45] Clay loves his friends so deeply that he is always willing to die for them, [46] though not so much as killing for them. Even as a young dragonet, he was willing to take the blame for his friends' mistakes and face Kestrel's punishments for them.[45] Peril described his soul as a torch that never went out, burning clear all night long.[47] Clay often smiles at most everybody.[48][26]

Biography

The Dragonet Prophecy

The Dragonet Prophecy

Clay's egg was sold to the Talons of Peace in exchange for two cows and brought to a hidden cave by his aunt Asha, where he was raised under the dragonets' guardians.

He was not strong enough to stop her fall, but he was able to slow her down until they crashed into trees and thudded to the grassy ground.

Clay was unsurprisingly delighted by the mud that was bordering the banks of the river they had landed beside. After pushing Tsunami's dislocated bone back into its socket, a scavenger, Mushroom, appeared in the clearing. They managed to quickly escape before Scarlet found them and were able to find their cave and were able to free their friends shortly afterward, but were captured by the enraged Queen Scarlet, due to the smoke signal the remaining dragonets had set so that Tsunami and Clay could find the cave and free them.

The Lost Heir

Clay was on the beach with the other dragonets of destiny, talking about going to the Kingdom of the Sea. He hid in a shallow mud shelf and helped Tsunami fight a SkyWing after she attacked him. They tried to drown the SkyWing, but then changed their minds and brought him back up to the surface. Clay helped place a tree on the SkyWing so that they would have a head start.

The Hidden Kingdom
After the dragonets escaped from the Kingdom of the Sea, they headed to the Rainforest Kingdom, where Clay was knocked out with a sleeping dart to get to the RainWing village. Clay later stood guard by the tunnels to the NightWing island with Starflight. After Glory became queen, he came back from the tunnel to tell her that Starflight was gone and falsely guessed that Starflight went to warn the NightWings.
The Dark Secret
When Morrowseer asked Starflight whether he hunted the same way as the other NightWings, Starflight thought about how Clay had done most of the hunting since leaving the caves where they grew up.
The Brightest Night
Clay first appeared when he bursts out of the tunnel, shielding Starflight. Sunny mentioned that the dragonets of destiny may have been like the alternate dragonets if not for his kindness and support. He was not mentioned much more until Sunny returned to the Rainforest Kingdom. Clay met Sunny when he came out of the healers' hut and tackled her down, telling her how he knew that she would be alright. When the dragonets were in the stronghold, Burn ripped off the top of the box Blister sent her and pulled out a dragonbite viper. A second one jumps out and bites Burn and kills her, but it is killed by Burn in the process. The second viper headed toward Starflight, Fatespeaker, and Sunny, but Clay knocked them out of the way and got bitten instead. Black veins soon started spreading out all over his right thigh. Peril flew out of nowhere, said that "she would not let Clay die," and burned out the venom by digging her talons into the section of his leg that got bitten, removing and burning out the venom. Clay survived, though he was left scarred and limping for the rest of his life.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy

Moon Rising

Clay served as a sort of school monitor for the newly founded Jade Mountain Academy. He was in charge of the prey center at the school, which turned out to be much more chaotic than he originally expected. He also appeared to be like a doctor and treated injured dragonets in the infirmary.

When the dragonflame cactus exploded in the History Cave, he ran inside to help get anyone out who may have been trapped. He was unharmed due to his fire-resistant scales and managed to retrieve a burned but alive Tamarin. At the assembly later, he spoke, but Moonwatcher was not listening to him in her search for the dragon that caused the explosion.
Winter Turning

Clay was first mentioned when Winter remembered how Scarlet asked for the dragonets of destiny's lives in return for Hailstorm's. Winter then thought to himself that Clay had been one of the dragons who had confirmed that the NightWings had no more powers.

Clay was later mentioned to be at the school when the Jade Winglet (except Turtle) was gone.
Escaping Peril

Clay was supposed to retrieve Peril from her cave as soon as Queen Ruby left. Peril followed him as he and the others flew out to face Scarlet. She promised to help Ruby. When Peril asked Clay what he wants her to do, he replies that she should make her own choices. Later in the night, during an argument with Ruby about whether or not they're able to trust Peril, Starflight revealed that Peril is in love with Clay and will likely kill everyone if she found out that his feelings are not mutual. Clay acted slightly embarrassed and then changed the subject.

He was featured in Peril's thoughts frequently throughout the rest of the book.
Talons of Power
Clay came out to the landing area with Sunny to stop Darkstalker, where he asked if the NightWing was a monster and reading everybody's minds was nosy. He looked embarrassed, alarmed, and confused at the same time when Darkstalker says his thoughts are very kind about certain dragons. Later, Clay gathered dragons to tell them the story of Queen Ruby's fight with Scarlet. Peril said that she talked to him and he hugged her, pleased with her as a whole. Qibli told Peril that Clay liked her too, but "doesn't know quite what to do about it yet."
Darkness of Dragons
Clay was teaching the Herbs and Healing class, explaining his injury. Then he helped Qibli search for a weapon to break into the Scorpion Den to save one of Clay's students, Ostrich. He was showing the "weapon box" when Qibli complained about the limited selection of weapons, and that he would be better off cutting his own throat and hanging himself from the alley wall. Clay then asks if Qibli needs to be armed to visit his grandfather, Vulture. Straight after Clay said no to Qibli's question about having any poison, Winter appeared, stating that he will not need any poison because he will be there, accompanying Qibli. After a bit of arguing, Winter spotted a replica of Qibli's earring on Clay's ear. Clay then proceeds to say that they're very fashionable. Qibli attempts to persuade Winter to put one on but fails. Later on in the book, Clay helped to fight off incoming NightWings. As the fighting broke off by Jade Mountain, Qibli said he heard a roar of pain that sounded like Clay. Clay was trying to stand after getting a deep fang bite in one of his forelegs. Peril and Sunny helped Clay stand up and all of them headed into Jade Mountain Academy. In the epilogue, Clay and Peril talked and flew in the rain together.

The Lost Continent Prophecy

The Hive Queen
Clay was indirectly mentioned by Tsunami in the prologue when Tsunami said that she and her friends had solved plenty of problems without animus magic.
The Poison Jungle
It is very likely that Clay was the dragon mentioned by Tsunami when she was dreamvisiting someone who was in Pyrrhia. Tsunami said, "tell him hugs to him, too, and no, the cows are not bigger and more delicious over here."
The Dangerous Gift
Snowfall thought how Tsunami's "gang of righteous do-gooders" would have used animus magic to help if it was working. Later, Lynx talked about the War of SandWing Succession and how the dragonets ended it.
The Flames of Hope

Bullfrog told part of the stealth team that Clay said that prophecies are not instructions but instead give hints in the right direction and that you have to choose what you do with them. When asked who Clay was, Lynx explained that he was in a prophecy.

Later, Clay appeared in Tsunami's memory of the young dragonets arguing over the sizes of kingdoms on Pyrrhia.

Legends

Dragonslayer

Clay was one of the five dragonets that Wren and Sky saw together through a hole to a cave system. Wren recognized him due to having seen swamp dragons before. When Clay made music, Leaf overheard this, not knowing that he was responsible. Leaf noticed how it upsetted the dragons around him.

Clay later assisted Leaf by helping him up a cliff he was trying to climb a tower. Leaf thought of Clay as an example when he thought of dragons with good hearts.

Winglets

Prisoners
Clay was mentioned by Fierceteeth when she said she wanted the dragonets dead but would spare her brother Starflight.

Field Guides

A Guide to the Dragon World

Clay was mentioned in the book's opening letter.

In the SeaWing chapter, Clay was indirectly mentioned in Coral's scroll about the War of SandWing Succession when she wrote that Tsunami was the leader of the dragonets of destiny.

In the RainWing chapter, Clay was mentioned in Kinkajou's short story about Silver.

Clay was indirectly mentioned in the SkyWing chapter as one of the dragons Scarlet wanted to kill.

Relationships

Glory is one of Clay's closest friends. When Clay thought that Glory had left them for the Rainforest Kingdom, he wanted to go after her over finding his family.[49] He described her as "just as important and smart as any SkyWing"[50] and felt bad about thinking that Glory was asleep when she was displayed as "artwork." Clay was willing to risk his own life saving Glory by braving the underground river himself.[51] When Glory went missing, Clay became worried about her and went with Deathbringer to rescue her from the NightWing island.[52] While Glory was training for the RainWing Royal Challenge, Clay helped calm her down and prompted Glory to take a nap that she needed.[53] In Escaping Peril, he was devastated when he believed she had been killed by Scarlet.[54] Clay will always forgive Glory.[49]

Upon initially meeting him, Peril was oddly excited to discover that Clay believed he had tried to kill his nestmates during hatching, but after Clay admitted that he hoped he was not the same as Peril, she became hurt.[55] She enjoys talking to Clay,[56] and regards him as "blazing";[57] Peril believed that Clay liked her how she was, and although Clay was hesitant towards her, he found that Peril was not entirely awful, and possessed an awkwardness and sadness that he understood.[57] He is honest with her,[58] and she disobeyed Scarlet's orders in order to talk with him[57] in addition to bringing him mud and food to help him heal from the arena.[59] When talking to her, Clay's guilt about Fjord's death and his friends' capture seemed lighter,[60] and he regards her as kind, outside of the arena.[61] She avoided Clay after Osprey's death because she wanted to keep him out of danger,[62] but she easily became angry[63] and jealous when Clay mentioned how important Glory[64] and Sunny were to him,[65] and later betrayed Clay and his friends to Scarlet because she was afraid of him leaving.[66][67] Clay felt sadness at her betrayal and guilt over trusting her afterwards,[68] although he felt sympathy for Peril because she had no other friends.[69] After escaping the Sky Kingdom, Clay invited Peril to join him and his friends on the journey to the Diamond Spray Delta, and although Peril refused, she did so on the grounds that until she could become safer and better, she believed she did not deserve to come with them.[70]

Whenever Peril sees Clay in present-day Pyrrhia, she often becomes startled, and then tries to casually brush it off.[71] She becomes violent towards those who hurt him,[72] she often intentionally appears in locations where she knows Clay will be,[73] and her heart gives small bounces when she sees him. She hopes she does not imagine the extra bit of sweetness in his smiles towards her, and he often is physically affectionate towards her, to Peril's delight.[29] Clay is reassuring towards her,[74] and all Peril wants is to be with him.[75] She is willing to obey everything he says,[75] and is often held back from violence by thinking about him; he sees good in her and believes that she is more than Scarlet's killer, encouraging her to become better.[76] His voice feels like wings spreading inside her heart,[12] and although Peril wanted to wrap her wings around him when he was reminded of Sora's betrayal, she knew it would only hurt him more. She thinks of his soul as a torch that will never go out, burning clear and true all night long.[47] Clay says that Peril can be whoever she wants to be,[77] and although all she wants to do is take care of him, she felt jealous[78] over the thought of him mourning Glory's passing.[54] She was worried that he and Sunny shared secrets she might be unaware of, thinking "Doesn't Clay know he can tell me anything?",[79] and felt an intense stab of jealousy when he intertwined his tail with Sunny's.[80] The idea of leaving him is heart-wrenching to her, but she was still willing to separate from him in order to kill Scarlet.[81]

She cares for his safety and bases many of her decisions upon his wellbeing,[82] but she becomes jealous when he acts supportive and reassuring to other dragons beside her.[83] She wants, above all, to take care of him, but often feels jealous of his other relationships;[78] something she is often ashamed of.[54] Clay speaks to her in a soft, warning voice when Peril is apt to hurt others, and gives her sweet, grateful smiles when she restrains herself from violence[84]; his smile lights candles in her heart. He wants Peril to make her own choices,[85] Peril, however, was completely willing to become a dragon completely changed to Clay's tastes, and she doubted if he would miss her if she disappeared.[86] Ruby was baffled at the effects of Soar's spell, stating "Peril would never just forget about Clay."[87] In Peril's own words, Clay is the dragon who changed her, and was the only dragon willing to give her a second chance.[88] Her heart sang when she removed the enchantment and was able to remember him again, but she also worried that without him, she went straight back to being a monster.[89]

Clay sees the good in her and believes that she is more than Scarlet's killer, encouraging her to become better and wanting her to make her own choices.[85] However, he winces when she touches him, and he watches her wings carefully whenever she is near anything flammable; Peril is unsure if he would change her firescales if he could.[90] When thinking about what she wanted most, an image of Clay wrapping his wings around her and never letting go flashed through her mind; however, Peril believes she is a long way off from getting or deserving that, and is worried that she might not be able to accept it if Clay did not love her back.[91]

Siblings

Clay has six siblings: Reed, Marsh, Crane, Pheasant, Sora, and Umber. He met them all but Crane, when Clay and Glory — who was disguised as a MudWing — went to go meet his mother. Crane had died in the sibling's first battle, between Burn's and Blaze's forces, before Clay visited. If his egg was not taken by the Talons of Peace, Clay would have been the troop's bigwings. In Clay's absence, Reed became the bigwings. He asked if Clay wanted to be their bigwings, but Clay turned Reed's offer down, knowing that Reed would do a much better job, having grown up with MudWings and having the complete trust and loyalty of all their siblings. When Starflight used his dreamvisitor, he saw Clay dream about his siblings. Starflight said that Clay's siblings were "more dragons we have to save in this war." Though he had only met them once during the war, he still thought of them often and had wondered out loud about them for the last few weeks.[92] Clay seemed shocked and saddened when Sora set off a dragonflame cactus in the school.

As with the other dragonets, Clay considers Starflight a brother. He took the dragonbite viper bite meant for Starflight[93] and shielded him when the volcano of the NightWing Fortress exploded.[94] Although Clay gets bored of Starflight's lectures sometimes, he cares about him a lot, so much that he would risk his life to keep him safe. Starflight sees Clay as his bigwings, as the rest of the dragonets do. All in all, Starflight and Clay have a good relationship.

Students

Clay cares about the students at Jade Mountain Academy and their safety. He is regarded as a hero among them due to his limp caused by his wound from the dragonbite viper. He is good at defusing arguments between students[5] and is shown to take their suggestions, such as when Tamarin and Peregrine suggested herbs and healing class.[95] He has also claimed that he tries to write as little as possible, due to him not being very good at spelling.[96]

Sunny is like a little sister to Clay, and he treats her as such. Clay wanted to go save Sunny when she was trapped in a cage in the Sky Kingdom as soon as he learned where she was.[97] When nobody will listen to Sunny, she turns to Clay to tell the others her ideas so they will listen. He seems to be the dragonet she confides in and trusts the most.[98] Clay took a poisonous viper bite to save Sunny's life and says he would do it over and over again if he could.[93] He is one of the only dragons to take Sunny seriously, as shown when Clay paid attention to a "weird crab" Sunny found in the underground river.[99]

Tsunami is among Clay's closest friends. He considered her brave and tough like a hero should be.[100] She called Clay a "handsome idiot" and gave him a hint that Peril likes him, but he did not understand.[63] Tsunami often interjects when Clay talks about Glory and Sunny in front of Peril because she appeared to understand that Peril gets jealous.[64] In The Lost Heir, she stated she had feelings for Clay but had gotten over her crush when she realized Clay thought of her as a sister.[101] She was also the second one to hatch, and the first egg Clay tried to help hatch.[102]

Quotes

"Squeak squeak squeak! And other annoying scavenger noises! I'm here to steal treasure away from a magnificent dragon!"
― acting as a scavenger (The Dragonet Prophecy, page 14)

"Hey, stop. Quit snarling at each other like mini Kestrels. Nobody's happy here. Sunny deals with it differently, that's all. But remember what we decided — we five stick together or else everything gets worse, right?"
― to Starflight and Tsunami (The Dragonet Prophecy, page 18)

"I'd like to be something more than alive. I'd like to be the kind of dragon she doesn't think I am — the kind they write prophecies about. That dragon would rescue her no matter how awful she is."
― to Glory and Tsunami (The Dragonet Prophecy, page 241)

"Hey. It's all right for Starflight to worry. We don't even know if Queen Scarlet is alive or dead. But. I know you want to find the SeaWings as fast as possible. So let's find them instead of fighting about it, and then we can get to safety sooner."
― to Tsunami (The Lost Heir, page 5)

"With a feast! There was a feast at the end of the story! When the missing SeaWing princess got home, her parents were so happy they made a feast! I remember the feast. They ate a whole whale. I bet I could eat a whole whale. Do you think we'll get a feast?"
― to the dragonets of destiny, about The Missing Princess (The Lost Heir, page 5)

"Of course, it's much nicer to be this high when your wings are free. But at least the SkyWings gave us a pig sometimes. Do you have pigs? Octopi would be alright if you don't. Or squid. Or manatees. I could go for a manatee right now. Or a whale. I'm not fussy, is what I'm saying. Say, how did you make this big thing? Did it take forever to build?"
― to Riptide (The Lost Heir, page 73)

"I'm awake. I'm just waiting until Glory and Tsunami stop fighting. I was dreaming about sheep and buffalo and bears. They were all on the table in front of me and I had to decide which to eat first. Oh, and they all smelled like melons. That part was kind of weird."
― to Sunny (The Hidden Kingdom, page 51)

"I'd die to save you and Starflight over and over if I had to."
― to Sunny, when he got bitten by the dragon bite viper (The Brightest Night, page 280)

"Well, I know what I want my destiny to be. I want it to be sleeping and being friends with you guys forever. Oh wait, also feasting! Lots of feasting."
― to the dragonets of destiny (The Brightest Night, Epilogue, page 308)

"CHICKENS, GIVE UP! WE'RE GOING TO EAT YOU! THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT! STOP RUNNING AWAY RIGHT NOW!"
― to the chickens in the Prey Center (Moon Rising, page 36)

"Peril. I'm not going to be a new Scarlet for you. You get to make your own choices now."
― to Peril (Escaping Peril, page 41)

"This is a school, you know. Sunny and I thought perhaps an entire cave full of sharp objects might not be the best idea. We thought, maybe, hey, something that locks instead."
― to Qibli (Darkness of Dragons, page 56)

"Peril, don't feel bad about Darkstalker anymore. He would have gotten out of his prison sooner or later. He was too smart to be stuck under there for long. And I think that scroll could have been just as dangerous as he was, if it was left floating around the continent."
― to Peril (Darkness of Dragons, page 373-374)
