Wings of Fire Fandom Mirror:About

This is a MediaWiki site which mirrors the main namespace articles from the Wings of Fire Wiki on Fandom.

I made this site because I don't like Fandom. There are many reasons for this, but Fork Fandom writes it succinctly:

Fandom is a business that exists to monetise user generated content. It does this through aggressive advertising placed on its community managed wikis, with those communities having little to no input or say into how their work is monetised or how they're able to visually present content on those sites. This results in a homogenous site, full of lookalike wikis. Good for Fandom, bad for community sites who have long been used to creating visually distinct brands for themselves.

I previously attempted to make my own independent Wings of Fire Wiki, but chose to halt the project. I explain why in this blog post.

Wings of Fire Wiki is not currently interested in forking, as they have a very active discussion forum whose users would either not want to or be unable to migrate from Fandom to a more independent provider. This is disappointing to me, but understandable.

I decided to create a "soft fork" that allows readers (like me) to enjoy the articles written by Wings of Fire Wiki without Fandom's overreaching hand on the site. Fandom wikis are made available under the CC-BY-SA license, which permits the content to be redistributed and remixed under the condition that the original source is credited and that remixed versions are provided under the same license. This legally permits me to use the wiki content as long as it is attributed. The bottom of each page reads "Content is avilable by wingsoffire.fandom.com under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike unless otherwise noted."

I don't expect this site to have any sort of popularity. User accounts are disabled. No edits are made. There's no discussion forum or fancy theme. I just want a wiki that doesn't get in my way, and I've made this available to anyone else who wishes that. The Wings of Fire Wiki will continue to operate on Fandom along with the discussion forum. I just created this for myself to read wiki articles.

If the Wings of Fire Wiki staff don't want this site public, then it shall become inaccessible. Send me a message by email or on my message board.
