"Reader, MudWing stories are not usually full of great loves or starry-eyed romance. We leave that to the SeaWings or the SandWings. But I don't mind telling you that I fell quite a bit in love with Olive at that moment."
— Sawgrass about himself and Olive, A Guide to the Dragon World

Sawgrass was an adult male MudWing prince who was featured in A Guide to the Dragon World. He was the author of But Who Shall Wear the Crown? and he resided in the MudWing palace.

Personality

Sawgrass described himself as "the brother who worried" and was often concerned about the health of his siblings and himself. He was anxious about the things happening around him and the world outside the palace, but he also cared a lot about his siblings.[1] He was awkward[2] and had trouble socializing his whole life.[3]

Biography

Pre-Series

Sawgrass hatched in the MudWing palace with his other siblings and grew up as a prince with his bigwings, Egret, as the destined heir of the throne. Sawgrass worried a lot about this and was concerned about many things, including his siblings.

After Egret gained the throne by killing their mother, Queen Anhinga, in a royal challenge, Sawgrass attempted to convince Egret to have dragonets as soon as possible but she never did. After Copperhead, their brother, ran away with an unnamed RainWing, Sawgrass became more fearful for his sister.

Following the death of Egret and Bayou vanishing, Sawgrass and Possum, his other brother, had to deal with the MudWing Succession Crisis. He was approached by Olive who gave him her eggs to hatch a new queen while Olive took the throne in the meantime.

Field Guides

Sawgrass was featured in the MudWing chapter of the guide as the author of But Who Shall Wear the Crown, a scroll detailing the events of the MudWing Succession Crisis.

Relationships

Sawgrass loved his brother and felt betrayed when he ran away to be with a RainWing.[2]

Coypu was Sawgrass's adopted daughter. He believed that she was a great queen and did not care that she was not his biological daughter, claiming that the family was still strong.[3]

Sawgrass was proud of his bigwings when she became queen.[4] Despite the fact that he believed she was an amazing sister, Sawgrass found Egret to be not gentle and would constantly be frightened by her attempts to scare him.[5] Later in her reign after the disappearance of Copperhead, Sawgrass was often scared by her recklessness.[6]

Sawgrass found Olive to be interesting and claimed that she was the most serene dragon he had ever seen.[5] Even though it was strange for MudWings to experience romance, Sawgrass wrote that he fell in love with Olive. He believed that she was a great queen.[3]

Quotes

"I worried about whether there would be enough worms and roots and grubs for us to eat. I worried about the tall dragons who poked their heads in to stare at us at night and day — what did they want? Who were they? Why did they keep taking our bigwings away and bringing her back and taking her away again? I worried about wrapping my mouth around the language of dragons and I worried about the weird yowling sounds of the birds on the lake and I worried about the sun going away and the strangeness of the dark and the noises of the insects and whether the sun would ever come back and then, when it did, I worried about how long we would have before it abandoned us again."
― Sawgrass's thoughts about himself (A Guide to the Dragon World, page 24)

"But this can't be right. [...] Egret has to defeat our mother in battle to become queen? She has to... has to actually... with her own talons..."
― to his tutor after learning about how royal challenges worked (A Guide to the Dragon World, page 25)

"Time to find a match! [...] Better have some dragonets soon, right-o?"
― to Egret the day after she became queen (A Guide to the Dragon World, page 26)
