The mindspace, also known as the mindspace temple,[1] was an abstract alter-dimension that was created through the abilities of the othermind. It was formerly maintained by Cottonmouth and Freedom.
Description
The mindspace was the area in which Cottonmouth and Freedom's minds were stuck and could speak to one another,[2] along with anyone else that they allowed in the mindspace.
It was described to descend like a poisonous haze across a dragon's mind, making their surroundings fade away.[3] The surroundings provided by the mindspace felt quite real,[4] and while inhabitants felt entirely themselves,[5] the mindspace allowed their inhabitants to understand things they usually would not, such as Luna understanding the human language.[6] Additionally, inhabitants saw and heard whatever Cottonmouth and Freedom wanted them to; their surroundings could change at will, either by selecting an existing location or conjuring one from imagination.[2] Cottonmouth and Freedom were also able to bring other beings into the mindspace, even from across Pantala, although doing so was much harder than when the being was in the same room;[7] when this was done, a kind of crackling would be present in the air before the being appeared.[8] Cottonmouth and Freedom were also able to speak through dragons that they had infected with the othermind via the mindspace.[7] While dragons can experience the concept of traveling through the mindspace, they do not become tired, as they are not using their physical limbs.[9] If Cottonmouth or Freedom are currently inhabiting a host, everyone within the mindspace can hear what said host hears.[10]
Although inhabitants could hear and see other beings through memories within the mindspace, they could not be felt, heard, or perceived by said other beings.[11][12] Inhabitants could see themselves and could touch other beings brought into the mindspace with them, as well as objects such as trees, however.[13]
The transition between memories was compared to a dark shadow descending rapidly from above[13] or the landscape simply floating,[14] swirling,[15] shifting, or melting away.[16] It rolled over inhabitants like fog, making the entire world blink, and when it cleared, inhabitants appeared somewhere else entirely.[13] Pineapple's memory of snuggling with Jambu faded away like morning mist, and left behind the ghost of the scent of jasmine.[17]
At a standstill, the mindspace is a featureless gray mist.[15] For most of its existence, it appeared as an earlier version of the throne room within the abyss village: no plants covered the floor or the archway, and the throne and columns appeared newly chiseled and smooth. It seemed brand-new, with no othermind plant present, and the floor consisted of soft, rich dirt.[18]
