Royal is a male HiveWing-SilkWing hybrid who was introduced in The Hybrid Prince. He is the son of Monarch and Glowworm, and resides in the Court of Refuge.

Description

Royal has black and orange scales, with interwoven stripes of black and orange on his butterfly-shaped wings and a dark purple underbelly. His snout is unusually long and his eyes are narrow slits of blue. He has antennae and wears a harness on his back that holds a blunt club. His expression has been described as cool and haughty.

Personality

Royal is often sarcastic and speaks in a bored voice, though Umber suspects he uses this voice to cover up his real emotions. He does not care about being a hero, and dismisses the idea of ruling and royalty to be "too much work." Umber thinks he is a jerk.

The Hybrid Prince

Royal first appeared alongside Taipan and Dugong when they approached Umber and Sora after they first arrived at the Court of Refuge. Royal and Taipan antagonized Umber and Dugong. When Taipan attacked Umber, the MudWing hit Royal with the Toughen Up Stick.

He was then mentioned by Monarch when she asked about him when Umber met her for the first time.

Royal helped try to chase down Platypus after Aurora's concert with Umber, Dugong, and Taipan, when Beryl ordered them to. He returned to the courtroom with Dugong and Taipan after they failed to catch Platypus.

In a flashback seen in the Memory Room, when the Triumvirate got overthrown by Beryl and Snakeroot, Monarch called out for Royal, but she and Glowworm were forced to leave without him. Monarch mentioned him again later and how she did not want to leave him behind when Precipice's enchantment on the eggs was explained.

When the Triumvirate came to take their throne back, Umber convinced Royal to help diffuse Taipan after Taipan threatened to hurt Mulberry unless he got what he wanted. Umber told Royal to do it for his parents. He initially scoffed, but after Umber mentioned he would technically be royalty and have his parents back, he seemed to consider the thought. He did not step in until Dugong did, in which he followed to "clean" any of the mistakes Dugong made. He distracted Taipan, which caused Taipan to get sprayed by Platypus' venom. Royal stood over Taipan to beat him with the Toughen Up Stick, but Beryl interrupted, offering for Royal and Dugong to be royalty alongside her. They both decline.

Monarch and Glowworm found Royal and hugged him as soon as they could.

Dugong

Royal believes that Dugong is pathetic. When told to by Taipan, he would hit Dugong with the Toughen Up Stick. He was often mean to Dugong. When Dugong stood up to Taipan for threatening Mulberry, Royal joined him and criticized Taipan.

Monarch and Glowworm

When Umber brought up Royal's parents to him during the stand off between the Triumvirate and Taipan, Royal appeared to be emotionally impacted by their mention, but claimed that they had left him. After standing up to Taipan and the Triumvirate taking back their power in the court, Royal was seen being hugged by his parents.

Taipan

Royal was formerly one of Taipan's underlings. He would follow the WildWing around and do as he said. Despite this, he was not treated as poorly as Dugong was, and did not want to be dragged into Taipan's messes. When Umber tried to get Royal to stand up to Taipan, Royal noted that he did not want to get involved, as Taipan was already humiliating himself enough. After Dugong decided to stand up to Taipan, Royal joined, and claimed that Taipan was boring, petty, small, and proud of his own stupid cruelty.
