- "Cheer up, Cottonmouth. I'm sure the emperor will let you chase imaginary dragons for the rest of your life if you want to. You can avoid the front line for years that way."
- — Coyote to Cottonmouth, The Flames of Hope
Coyote was a male human who was introduced The Flames of Hope. He was a resident of Cottonmouth's empire, and his last known whereabouts was in Pyrrhia.
Description
Coyote wore fancier, cleaner, and more elegant clothing than any humans Luna had ever seen before, and it was decorated with little swirls of silver thread in delicate filigree patterns.[1] He wore a bag around his waist[2] and had a knife tucked into one of his boots.[3] He appeared lined and grizzled as he grew older,[4] and his wrappings appeared rougher, lacking the silver filigrees.[5]
Personality
Coyote slouched and swaggered when he was younger, grinning and throwing rocks at trees before strutting in a circle and pronouncing himself as Emperor Coyote.[6] He was loud, taking up all of the space and all of the air,[1] and was scoffing,[3] bossy, and cheerful. [7] He also worried for the other human cities[8] and did not wish to steal more eggs.[5]
Biography
Pre-series
Coyote was on a scouting mission with Argyll, Cottonmouth, and another human in search of dragons. Though they spent most of the time joking around and discussing the emperor's, or rather, Cottonmouth's plan and headed back to camp with little success.
Later, along with Cottonmouth and their troop, Coyote managed to steal an egg from a dragon's nest. Cottonmouth wanted to steal the other two eggs from the dragon's nest and Coyote obliged, though with some hesitation. As the troop was hauling the eggs out one by one, Coyote asked why Cottonmouth still thought it was worth the risk. Cottonmouth replied saying that they will be his weapons once he learned to control them, which made Coyote uneasy.
Before Cottonmouth and a group of his followers left for Pantala, he asked where his brother was. One of the humans told him that there has been no word from Coyote since he left to warn the southern villages.
The Lost Continent Prophecy
Coyote appeared in the mindspace vision that Cottonmouth and Lizard showed to Luna and Dusky.
Relationships
Coyote was quick to exclude Cottonmouth when he boasted about each of his friends ruling the three empires, and Cottonmouth spoke to him coldly.[1] Coyote told Cottonmouth that his plan to capture and tame dragons was ridiculous[7] and was willing to let his brother carry on looking for dragons alone while he and his friends returned to the city.[2] He mocked Cottonmouth's pretentious tone, laughing at him along with their friends, and slapped his brother on the shoulder before implying that by chasing dragons, Cottonmouth planned to avoid being drafted into the army, to which Cottonmouth replied frostily;[9] he then waved away his brother's protests before shouting that he would race Cottonmouth back to camp.[10]
As Cottonmouth grew older and assumed a position of power within his empire, he was quick to curtly order Coyote around.[5] Coyote eventually agreed to his brother's requests, throwing up his hands and stalking back towards the dragon's cave in order to steal more of their eggs.[11] Coyote seemed uneasy around his brother.[12]
